Oppo And OnePlus New Foldable Phone Is The Best

Oppo And OnePlus New Foldable Phone Is The Best

Chinese tech giant Oppo and sub-brand OnePlus have launched a new foldable phone. The Oppo-branded model (called "Find N3") will launch in China, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and other regions, while the OnePlus version (called "Open") will launch in the US, India and some regions. Europe.

I've tested the Oppo Find N3/OnePlus Open (I'll just call it the OnePlus Open from now on, since that's the model I tested) and it's the best foldable phone on the market right now.

A folding book-shaped design first introduced in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, unfolded screens are brighter and the folding panel has no visible creases.

The camera system also uses newer and larger image sensors, including a 48-megapixel primary camera that uses Sony's latest LYTIA sensor, which uses new "pixel stacking" technology. The combination of this new technology and the larger sensor means the Open's main camera can capture a lot of light. The following images were taken outdoors without using night mode.

The images are very impressive for a sophisticated device, almost silent, with bright colors and a high dynamic range. What's even more impressive is that this camera isn't even the star of the show in my opinion. Instead, the Open has a 64-megapixel periscope zoom lens that can produce photos with greater magnification than the iPhone 15 Pro Max or Google Pixel 8 Pro (both phones announced a new improved zoom lens).

Folding phones once had worse cameras than traditional compact phones because the folding design meant there wasn't as much room for a flagship camera system. The OnePlus Open/Oppo Find N3 solves this problem by packing newer, bigger and better camera sensors than the best Apple and Google phones.

Otherwise, the exposed zipper is of excellent quality and would have been tested millions of times. I treat these marketing numbers with great caution. Instead, I'll share an anecdote: Last week I dropped the Open while riding my bike, dropped my phone, hit a concrete floor in Los Angeles, and bounced twice. Surprisingly, there were no scratches on the hinge, screen or panel, apart from damage to the right aluminum frame. The phone still works fine. You can see the drop below (my 360 camera caught it on video)

All in all, the OnePlus Open ticks all the boxes that a foldable phone should, and the fact that it's being sold in the US is a big deal as it's the first Chinese foldable phone to be released in the US. leaves. behind.

I think the Open stacks up better than the Samsung Fold 5 in most areas, but whether the Open can convince US consumers that it should choose Samsung is another historical question. There are obstacles, such as the fact that the Open is only available through the OnePlus Store or Amazon and Best Buy. No mobile carrier in the United States offers this phone.

But the OnePlus Open is cheaper than the Fold 5 at $1,600, and a generous trade-in offer brings the price down to at least $1,400. This is a better phone at a lower price.
