Burning Man 2023 Population Growing In Black Rock Desert: 62,000 And Counting

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nevada - The Burning Man festival is now home to Nevada's 11th largest city, and thousands of bonfires continue to flock to the Black Rock Desert north of Reno for anything.

The city's provisional population is 87,000 and will be around 62,000 on Wednesday. It continues to grow during the week and closes on the following Monday.

Each year, Fire Man members build a city from scratch in a program developed by nonprofit organizers. Participants will have fun, dance and admire large art projects, some of which will be lit from Friday.

Unlike previous years, tickets for this year's event seem to be in high demand. Ticket prices dropped below the original price last weekend, but are now up to $575, according to reseller StubHub and Facebook page listings.

Some longtime Burnt Man attendees predict this year's attendance will be below 87,000 due to a combination of last year's inclement weather, California tech cutbacks and high gas prices.

And on Sunday, a small group of environmentalists briefly blocked the main road to Burning Man before tribal police — the road runs through Paiute land at Pyramid Lake — got in trucks and cleared the way. Several protesters who wanted to draw attention to the climate impact of the Burning Man event were arrested.

However, early arrivals had many quiet days as people battling the heat and dust storms from 2022 were forced to retreat to work due to low dust levels, a big change from 2022.

On Tuesday, the first steady wind blew, blowing a fine cloud of beach dust into the camps and forcing people to wear masks and goggles.

The event will end with a bang next weekend, with pyrotechnicians setting fire to the 'Man' effigy on Sunday night before burning down the 'Temple of the Heart' on Sunday night ahead of the mass exodus known as Exodus Monday.
