YouTube is testing another bonus for Premium subscribers that offers higher bitrates than existing 1080p streams. An option called "1080p Premium" is being tested for a small number of users and appears to increase video streaming speeds by a few Mbps. This may be a good option for subscribers who mainly watch on smartphones, where 1080p resolution screens are more common than 4K.
Speaking of video bitrates, popular video editing software LumaFusion is now available on Android and ChromeOS, having previously been available for iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Finally, in case you missed PlayStation State of Play yesterday, my colleague Ash Parrish has a great collection of the hottest trailers. Personally, I'm excited that Baldur's Gate 3 finally has an official release date: August 31st. Previously there was a vague "August 2023" release window.
And now for a silly tweet to start the day:
Stay tuned as we continue to update this list with the top news of the day: February 24, 2023.

Where did the class assignments go wrong? We've talked a bit about how interest rates explain what's happening in tech, but I loved this newsletter about how Alexa can create impromptu shopping lists for you:
The next day was the last straw. Someone at my house asked, and in a terrible concert during this time, my wife, my 3 and 6 year olds, and I all asked in a tone no parent should ever push. " Alexa, NO!!!! " they shouted, not their children.
Alexa, what happened?[ www.readmargins.com ]

Remember Ozy Media, a New York company with no interesting events, no guest stars, no top writers and no readers? In 2021, this NYT article (called a "hit job" by founder and CEO Carlos Watson at the time) exposed the whole thing as a scam and revealed that CEO Samir Rao was a YouTube executive talking to potential investors. .
Now that Rao Watson has pleaded guilty while being arrested, prosecutors say the lies don't end with fraud:
Watson had Ozy's manager at the time send to the bank a forged contract between Ozy and the cable network that he believed was for a second season. When the then-CFO refused, Rao, with Watson's approval, sent the bank a fake contract with terms favoring Ozy and a forged signature, which the then-CEO copied.
Later that day, the then-CEO emailed Watson and Rao to say he was leaving immediately. "It's illegal. It's fraud. He's forging someone's signature to get an advance from an open bank," he said. He continued: "To be clear, what you see as a measured risk, I see as a crime."
Ozy Media and its founder Carlos Watson have been accused of a multi-million dollar fraud scheme for years.[ United States Attorney's Office, Eastern District of New York ]

The next big round of meta releases is coming. From the latest edition of my commandline newsletter, which just landed in the mailboxes of paying subscribers:
Meta is planning another round of releases, I can sadly confirm. Management has been tight-lipped about what will happen, both internally and externally, but I'm told the current plan is to announce additional layoffs in March after paying out last year's performance bonuses. Given what I've heard of some organizations planning double-digit layoffs, I wouldn't be surprised if the final cut totals 11,000 people, or 13 percent of the company.
