It's Been A Bleak Start To 2024 For The Magnificent 7 Tech Stocks After Crushing The Market Last Year
The so-called Magnificent Seven stocks are off to a shaky start in 2024.
According to Refinitiv, they have already lost $316 billion this year.
The biggest loser was Apple, whose shares fell 4% as investors feared a slowdown in sales.
2023 is off to a rocky start for the big tech stocks dominating the market
According to data from Refinitiv, the market value of the "Magnificent Seven" (Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, owner of Google, Amazon, Nvidia, the main meta-platform of Facebook and Tesla) fell by $316 billion in the first two days of 2024 negotiations .
Apple led the decline, and its shares fell more than 4%, valuing them at about $130 billion. Investors bought shares of the iPhone maker after Barclays cut the stock due to slow hardware sales.
Tesla also fell 4% after overtaking BYD as the world's largest electric car maker, while the value of Elon Musk's company fell by nearly $32 billion. It delivered 484,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter, behind its Chinese rival's 526,000.
Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia and Meta are also turning red this year and investors are starting to lower their interest rates.
Traders expect six rate cuts of 25 basis points by the end of the year, according to the CME FedWatch tool.
But in a tough note published on Wednesday, policymakers said they were "extremely cautious about inflationary risks." Rising interest rates are bad news for stocks, as investors can get better relative returns by buying bonds or keeping their money in the bank.
"We will see some gains soon," said Joshua Mahoney of Scope Markets. "Doubt remains about the prospect of a 150 basis point cut in interest rates that the market currently expects, so there is a risk that Fed members will somehow try to combat those expectations."
The Magnificent Seven stock's rocky start to 2024 stands in stark contrast to last year's big gains.
According to Goldman Sachs, the group will account for nearly three-quarters of the S&P 500's total earnings in 2023. Nvidia, Meta and Tesla rose more than 100%.

Stock Market News Today: Stocks Drift Higher As S&P Sits Near New Record
Stocks rose slightly on Wednesday due to a short trading week and the absence of major catalysts driving market movements.
On Wednesday, the S&P 500 index (^GSPC) touched a record high of 4,796.56, but failed to rise and closed at a new record. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) led gains with a 0.3% gain, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500 rose more than 0.1%.
This year the average of these three countries has increased by double digits. The S&P 500 rose more than 24% and the Dow Jones rose more than 13%. The Nasdaq led the way with gains of nearly 44% this year.
Investors expect market gains to continue for another two months. On Wednesday afternoon, the S&P 500 headed for its ninth weekly gain, which would be its best gain since 2004. The leading index has risen nearly 13% since November 1.
Stocks have risen over the past two months as investors fueled speculation that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates in March and that inflation will fall closer to the central bank's 2% target, with no signs that the US economy was ready to fully recover. . - When braking.
This week's news did little to change the situation as the share price rose.
Shares of The New York Times Company rose more than 2% ( NYT ) after the newspaper chain sued Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI for copyright infringement.
Meanwhile, Apple won an agreement to suspend the ban on sales of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 in the US. The court had earlier halted the sale due to a patent dispute with medical technology company Masimo (MASI). Massimo shares fell more than 4% on the news, while Apple shares were little changed on the day.
Treasury yields continued to reach levels not seen since July. The 10-year Treasury yield (^TNX) fell nearly 10 basis points to 3.79% on Wednesday.

Tech Giants Could Be Forced To Share Secret News Deals Under Australias Media Bargaining Code
Tech giants could be forced to hand over sensitive information about how they distribute information on their platforms to Australia's competition watchdog, as part of the federal government's commitment to level the playing field. game for public interest journalism in the digital age.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, under the Media Marketing Code, regularly publishes reports on how platforms distribute news content on their pages and whether there is significant bargaining power between tech giants and media organizations.
New data collection powers will also be introduced, giving the regulator the ability to force companies to give up their confidential commercial relationships with media companies.
The Federal Government's plans to legislate the changes announced on Sunday respond to one of five recommendations made by the Treasury during its November 2022 review of the Media Transactions Act.
The coalition government's initiative proved successful, leading to 23 deals between Google and news publishers and 13 deals between Meta and news publishers owned by Facebook and Instagram.
The ABC told the magazine it used the money to appoint 57 regional positions, including journalists in 19 countries, 10 of which it did not have before.
Other publishers, including SBS and Nine Entertainment, said the extra money helped them invest in more journalists and tell more stories.
Under the Media Negotiations Act, the Treasurer can order the inclusion of a digital platform, implying stricter rules for negotiations with press publishers.
No digital platform has yet been developed, but problems with code enforcement led to an agreement between Meta, Google and news publishers.
Deputy Treasurer Stephen Jones said the study's recommendations were "sound" and would strengthen the code for the future. But he warned that if tech companies don't step up, the device could be used.

“But let’s be clear: We have the power to define digital platforms and we are ready to use it,” Jones said. “We want news media and digital platforms to come together and negotiate in good faith.”
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said the changes would "help ensure public interest in journalism is sustainable in the digital age".
“Supporting these guidelines will help improve the overall landscape and ensure Australian media companies are properly compensated for their journalistic content through commercial agreements with platforms,” he said.
The number will be revised at the beginning of 2025 after four years of application.
These are stocks that will be purchased over the next 10 years.
Growing news company Channel 1 will launch its own network in February.
The tech startup announced the launch date on Tuesday by sharing a 20-minute demo video on X-ex-Twitter. It starts off like a regular cable news channel, but with real-life footage overlayed on top of AI-generated footage and split between different AI personalities.
A man firmly assures the viewer that Channel One's products are "not fake news". Instead of creating its own stories, Channel One relies on artificially curated content from "credible news sources" around the world, tailored and personalized according to its tastes, according to its AI presenter, who wears human clothes. of each viewer. . and interests.
The most interesting thing is that a channel uses artificial intelligence to create images and videos of events that "cameras could not capture the action". Compare this courtroom sketch with how "it's not a depiction of real events," but it helps the audience relate to them.
In its show programme, Channel One mainly uses real news footage and clips from other sources. When viewing an AI-generated image, this is clearly indicated by a warning message in the upper right corner of the screen.
What's most impressive is that the technology is used to translate speech while preserving the speaker's voice. One example shows a person explaining something in French in the first video, and then speaking in English in a convincing synthetic voice that sounds very similar to himself.
Another fake presenter in the video promotes Channel One's "Special New Way" using an "emoji gauge" to instantly poll public opinion. He's using the upcoming Tesla Cybertruck as a guinea pig.
"I quickly read the last 30,000 tweets posted on X about Cybertruck," the faker explains, summarizing all the emojis used in the tweets. "The feeling about the car is very different."
Custom made
The platform will launch as a traditional show based on different regions and languages on X and other streaming platforms.
But the ultimate goal is to launch an app for smartphones that allows Channel One to be completely personalized for each user, where they can choose their favorite topics and even their favorite fake news characters. This launch phase is planned for next summer.
Channel 1 reports are not working at all. Human editors and editors are used to "review each step for accuracy and clarity." If Channel One finally achieves the level of personalization it has described, constant fact-checking will prove a daunting task for the staff working behind the scenes.
Overall, what we've seen so far is very interesting, but it's worth noting that this isn't a live demo, so we don't know how well the finished product will hold up "live."

5 Ways To Stand Out In Tech During Layoffs, From A Tech Career School Founder
For those who follow the tech news cycle, the year 2023 has been defined by month after month of consistent posts from the biggest names in tech.
As companies compete for talent and hire thousands of employees every month, the conventional wisdom is that you just have to get the job, but the math has changed.
First let's talk about what has changed.
In the past, the stack of credentials on your LinkedIn profile was enough to get you into a company. Today, you are competing with hundreds of thousands of people whose profiles look exactly like yours
A few years ago, you were primarily competing against other early-career talent. Today, you're competing with nearly 200,000 laid-off tech workers, many of whom will take a downgrade or change grade to regain job security.
So if this is the new reality, will you be competitive? Yes, you can, and here's how to do it:
1. Look for jobs that experienced people might overlook
Well, maybe you've always wanted to work at Google, and I'd be the last person to tell you to give up on that dream. But during an economic downturn, it's a good idea to consider a "stepping stone" that will lead you to your dream job while the industry recovers. I can say that while all industries are cyclical, technology will always come back because growth always comes from innovation.
It's a good idea to look for people who are hungry and passionate about lesser-known startups and their space. This means finding companies that might interest you but haven't yet raised a lot of money and have a lot of media coverage. The harder it is to find a company, the more likely others will apply to work there.
When you find startups that have products you like, but don't have job listings on their site, contact us anyway! I personally reached out and recruited people who expressed a passion for what we were doing when I saw a way to create a position for them. Startup founders are people who will take a chance and take bold steps to build a business for you, even if you don't have a list.
2. Don't just apply, but actively get the attention of hiring managers
While most people click LinkedIn's quick apply button and send off a tired resume and cover letter, you need to be proactive to stand out. It means doing unpleasant things, like coming into contact with cold people.
The art of cold calling takes practice, and there are free resources like this online course to help you get it right. But even if you're not good yet, you'll definitely notice, because most people don't do scary things. And when you do something that others don't, you stand out.
A tip to get employers' attention, especially if you're applying to a startup, is to say why you love their products and what makes you the right person for the job, even if it's not obvious.
Authenticity can earn you a lot of points, so focus on products and services that you really like, or better yet, love.
3. Don't just take courses, have a recognition strategy
Yes? Is the founder of a professional tech school telling you not to take classes just for the sake of taking classes? yes
If you talk to my students, they will tell you that I believe that all education is beneficial. But just because it's useful doesn't mean it will give you short-term results.
The way to help your online credentials and certifications really stand out to employers is to have a really strong story behind each course or certification program you take.
Look for courses that don't teach any skills, but instead help you complete hands-on projects that illustrate how the skills you've learned apply in the real world. Even better, if you volunteer for free or low-cost work at a local small business or nonprofit, use the skills you've learned to work on real-world projects or apply your own business idea. These are completely valid experiences that should be on your resume and interview history at the time of your interview.
Finally, most professionals I've talked to get more results from live classes than pre-recorded, self-paced classes because it's a faster way to grow your network and connect with the people you really want.
4. Find ways to demonstrate and speak your skills
Most beginners talk about their skills in general terms. They'll say things like, "I'm an excellent communicator" or "I'm very organized and would make an excellent project manager." You might think you're showing confidence here, but it just makes you look like everyone else.
Instead, talk about the systems and processes you use to stay organized and how you've used those skills to accomplish something complex, such as coordinating a large number of people on a project or organizing a complex project yourself.
That's why it's so powerful to focus on developing your skills, by taking project-based courses or working on side projects.
When you talk about how you've developed your skills through hard work, whether you get paid or not, people start listening to you and it's more convincing and impressive than just saying you're good and hoping you're good. believe you you.
5. Get your name out there and proceed
Yes, set the stage to tell your network that you're looking for opportunities. But this is only the first, and perhaps the most passive, step you can take. However, if you want to stand out, you need to focus on what some people do.
If someone promises you a relationship, don't wait for it to happen, keep going every week until it happens.
When approaching people for career advice, follow up at least a few times before moving on. People are busy and you need to prioritize yourself, not the other way around.
If you get a good interview but haven't heard back in a week, don't ask for an update like everyone else, send an email asking what to do in your first week on the job. You are waiting to show that you are ready to take on the challenge against other candidates.
There's a big reason so many people have sought tech careers over the years: They're the highest-paying jobs in the world, with the most flexibility and the lowest training requirements.
But like any competitive industry, you need to really make your case stand out and explain why this opportunity is worth pursuing.
Ambition and entrepreneurship are rewarded in the technology sector. The more risks you take that others are afraid to take, the closer you are to becoming the kind of person you've always admired and dreamed of being.

Stock Market News Today: Stocks Extend Gains Into Thanksgiving Holiday, Nvidia Falls After Earnings
However, the situation recovered in the afternoon after OPEC postponed its next meeting. West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) futures fell less than 1% to $77 a barrel.
Yahoo Finance Inc. said:
OPEC+, the world's biggest oil producer led by Saudi Arabia, announced it would postpone next month's meeting until Nov. 30, amid uncertainty over the group's plans to cut production.
"[OPEC] likes to reach agreements before they meet," Ed Hurst, a senior researcher at the University of Houston, told Yahoo Finance on Wednesday morning.
The announced delay may be an indication that member states are not on the same page regarding next steps.
Stuart Glickman, energy equity analyst at CFRA Research, told Yahoo Finance on Wednesday of the delay: "It means that everybody around the world is having a hard time getting used to the idea of cuts."
Saudi Arabia, which is unilaterally cutting 1 million barrels a day later this year, is pushing for smaller OPEC+ members to participate more in the cuts.
The goal of this year's cuts is to reduce global supply and keep oil prices below 20% of the 2022 average oil price.
"We see an opportunity to deepen the group, but expect Saudi Arabia to seek additional barrels from other members to share the adjustment burden," wrote Helima Croft, head of global commodity strategy at RBC Capital. On this week's note.
Market fundamentals could contribute to unease among OPEC+ members after the group released its oil market outlook this week. Data from major financial traders reviewed by Reuters showed that the latest sell-off in November was driven by weak sentiment in oil producers and airlines.
According to the University of Houston Hearst, "A price increase during times of smooth demand may further reduce demand, but lower prices."

WT researchers explore ways to combat teacher burnout in a new publication
As concerns grow about the nation's teacher shortage, three WT teachers have published research on the importance of self-care to prevent teacher burnout.
An article titled "Keeping Your Cool: Self-Care for Teachers" was recently published in Texas: The Journal of the Texas Council of Teachers of English Dr. By J. Russell Miller, Professor WT Lanna and Professor Bob Hutton. Executive Director of Education and Teacher Training; Dr. Teri Bingham, Professor of Education; and so on. Crystal Hughes, associate professor of curriculum and instruction and director of candidate services; And Hayden Mas, a second-grade teacher at Avondale Elementary School in the Amarillo Independent School District.
"Education is an emotionally, cognitively and physically demanding career choice, with benefits that feed the soul but also drain the wallet. Some teachers enter the profession with a maddened desire to influence young people, but after a few years the flame fades." "Others follow this urge, which gradually becomes a comfortable but unemotional task," the researchers say.
According to the 2022 survey, 77 percent of teachers had "seriously considered" leaving the profession, and 72 percent had taken steps to leave the profession, the researchers noted in their paper. According to the results of the survey, six out of ten people plan to change their career within five years. Researchers have found that teachers face constant changes in expectations due to new curricula, new teaching and new methods, as well as high student-teacher ratios. Teachers also worry that their salaries are much lower than jobs in the private sector because teaching positions require degrees and certifications that are not required in other fields.
All WT researchers are Terry B. faculty members in the Rogers College of Education and Social Sciences.
WT has won national awards for floor care
WT's cross country team was recently recognized as one of the best in the country.
The Professional Site Management Association honored the company with Green Star Awards in the "University and College Lands - Large (500+ Acre)" category at its annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky.
This award program includes national recognition based on work to maintain excellence. The Green Star Awards complement other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction. At the award ceremony, PGMS presented four major awards, its highest award, as well as twelve honorable mentions.
The WT SSC Services for Education Grounds team manages approximately 350 acres on the main campus, including eight artificial turf fields and a 70-acre cross-country ski area.
"WT is honored to receive this special award," said Stan Pena, assistant vice president of facilities. "Our campus beautification efforts continue to achieve important goals by providing a beautiful and safe place for our students, faculty, staff and visitors."
A complete list of 2023 Green Star winners can be found at pgms.org/page/2023GreenStarWinners.
Teacher WT is part of a team dealing with conflict resolution in communication.
Professor WT has joined colleagues across the country to publish cutting-edge research on conflict management.
Dr. Leslie Ramos Salazar, WT Abdulatt Professor of Business Communication and Decision Management at the Paul and Virginia Engler College of Business, was part of the panel of experts that published the book The Power of Assertive Communication in Conflict Resolution: Insights from Verbal Statements. . A highly respected international journal on conflict management.
More contributions from Dr. Steve Wiener, director of the Institute for Relationship Communication; Amy M. Anderson, professor of communication at Spokane Community College; and general counsel Michael Bush.
"Conflict is a part of any relationship and is often accompanied by strong emotions such as anger," says Ramos Salazar. Unresolved conflict can lead to negative outcomes, including relationship dissatisfaction, emotional abuse, and even relationship failure such as divorce. These reactions can have a significant impact on a person's emotional well-being and overall quality of life.'
Research Dr. Wiener's verbal coding system was tested and carefully analyzed over 15 years on more than 4,000 videos of anger-inducing conflict situations in personal relationships. This coding system demonstrated that the use of assertive verbal expressions can lead to positive conflict outcomes and increase relationship satisfaction.
These affirmative statements are usually classified in research as “I-you” statements, such as: “I'm angry with you because you don't help us clean the house. I want you to do your job, and you do it with me."
"Listening skills help resolve conflicts effectively and maintain harmonious relationships," said Ramos Salazar. "The Man-You Statement expressed clarity, fairness, honesty and respect, and created an opportunity for the expression and understanding of true feelings. It also expressed readiness to work together to resolve the conflict."
In the study, 175 student participants from Texas and New York universities answered a survey that examined perceptions of interpersonal conflict in the classroom and among classmates from the recipient's perspective. In addition, participants rated six different verbal communication statements according to their levels of assertiveness, passivity, and aggressiveness: “We,” “I-You,” “Ask-Why,” “But,” “I,” and “You. ” »

Speaking of data privacy, digital communications technology company Cisco has found that the younger generation is more concerned about data privacy than other generations.
In a consumer survey titled "Generational Privacy: Young Consumers Lead the Way," Cisco researchers found that younger consumers are "taking intentional steps to protect their privacy, with 42 percent of consumers aged 18 to 24 calling themselves data subjects compared to just 6 percent of consumers aged 75 and over. older
The researchers rated 33 percent of respondents as "privacy," meaning they care about privacy and are "willing to take steps to protect it, such as changing companies or providers because of their data policies or data sharing practices." "Younger consumers are 'the most willing to take the most steps to protect their privacy,'" the report's authors said. 42 percent of 18- to 34-year-old consumers are private, a percentage that steadily declines with age."
The survey also found that the proportion of consumers who requested the removal or modification of data rose from 14 percent last year to 19 percent this year. "Again, this has a lot to do with age, with 32 percent of consumers aged 18 to 24 asking to delete or change data, compared to just 4 percent of older consumers," the report said.
Many consumers "have lost trust in institutions due to the use of artificial intelligence, and 50 percent of respondents expect governments to introduce regulations and enforce privacy protections," the technology report's authors noted. The survey also found that 12 percent of respondents identified themselves as regular users of generative artificial intelligence.
Another key finding of the report was that 48 percent of respondents said AI could help improve their lives. And 54 percent said they are "willing to share anonymized personal data to improve AI products and decision-making."
However, the survey found that 62 percent of respondents are "concerned about how companies today use their personal data for artificial intelligence" and 60 percent said they no longer trust companies because of the use of artificial intelligence, according to the report.
In a statement, Cisco said the company is taking steps to "(re)gain customer trust, such as auditing products and addressing bias, being more transparent and explaining how AI works, ensuring human involvement, and establishing a program to establish ethical AI governance." .” It is possible

Open Source: An NC Triangle Tech Company Is On The Verge Of Disappearing
I'm Brian Gordon, technology reporter for The News & Observer, North Carolina's weekly open source business, jobs and technology newsletter.
Research Triangle Park is home to life sciences companies, but the area could soon lose one.
Agricultural technology company AgBiome warned the North Carolina Department of Commerce this week that it could "potentially" lay off 123 of its employees, including the company's two CEOs and other senior executives. By law, companies that want to close a plant of this size must give their employees at least 60 days' notice.
The layoffs will be effective from December 15. The company said yesterday that it is still trying to find investors to continue its operations, but "wants to ensure that our emergency personnel have the opportunity to immediately explore other options."
The company attributed its poor outlook to a difficult venture capital market. It raised $116 million during the low interest rate periods of 2021, but 2023 predicts a tougher outlook.
"Companies that succeeded in raising Series A funds a few years ago are now having trouble raising new capital," specialist columnist BioSpace wrote in August.
The rise and fall of biotechnology especially affects the triangle; Most lists of the largest US life sciences markets place Raleigh-Durham in the top 10 or even the top 5.
AgBiome makes pesticides, and the company says growers will continue to use two of its most popular fungicides, called Howler and Thea, "for years to come."
These products are likely to last longer than the company that made them.
For the rest of this week's news:
VinFast is having a (mostly) bad week in the market and in the media
WinFast CEO Le Thi Thu Thuy told Bloomberg on Monday: "We don't look at the share price as much as we focus more on execution and the future."
Maybe it would have been better if she hadn't seen him. Vietnamese automaker Vinfast, based in North Carolina, continued its sharp decline this week, falling to $5.70 per share. For a brief moment in August, the stock traded at $93.
What Tui said in the Bloomberg interview should scare investors.
He admitted his company would try to raise "a lot of capital" to finance its expansion into Asia. VinFast has already raised (and spent) billions to roll out its new fleet of all-electric SUVs to drivers in more than 50 markets around the world.
At the heart of the company's success in the United States is a $4 billion car and battery factory in Chatham County, North Carolina.
To raise more money, Vinfast plans to issue more shares, but analysts say this could further depress the share price. The financing from VinFast's president should support the company for the next 18 months, Twee said, but a combination of the financing and the share sale may not be enough.
However, this morning VinFast announced that it had signed a $1 billion stock option agreement with Yorkville Advisors, an investment fund.
The week of ups and downs for the company was marked by several articles explaining why Vinfast cars are not selling so well in their home country.
"'Much more to do': Vietnam's leading electric car maker struggles to gain traction in domestic market," ran the headline in southern China's Morning Post. "Vietnamese company Vinfast faces reliability problems in its region," said the Euronews channel.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Twik reiterated Vinfast's goal of selling 40,000 to 50,000 electric cars this year. He believed that the company's stock would recover once the automaker reached these milestones.
At the moment, the market seems skeptical.
Catch Pendo
Yesterday I interviewed Pendo CEO Todd Olson at his company's Pendomonium conference in downtown Raleigh. He shares his thoughts on software companies, the industry as a whole, and why he chose to give his company a pink brand.
I also asked about Israeli Pendo workers in the context of the ongoing war. Pendo has an office in the north of Tel Aviv with about 60 employees, of whom only 10% are on call.
"So far we have been lucky that no one has been directly injured (by the violence)," he said.
And the Triangle is a leading employer in the technology field…
According to local data provided by the North Carolina Technology Association, tech jobs in the Triangle have dropped by half in the past year. Last month there were 5,671 computer openings. Probably not everyone is actively complying.
The Triangle's biggest tech hire in September was First Citizens Bank, which acquired the remnants of Silicon Valley Bank earlier this year, data show. Raleigh-based First Citizens Bank will report quarterly results next week. It will be interesting to see how he negotiates the inclusion of the former SVB in his future plans.
Assignment: Duke's patent series
Music distribution platform Bandcamp is cutting half of its workforce after being laid off by Cary-based Epic Games Company last month.
Pactive Evergreen will expand its Raleigh warehouse and hire about 100 workers, according to the Triangle Business Journal. The company is known in western North Carolina after it laid off more than 900 workers at a Canton paper mill.
Duke University received $102.5 million this year to commercialize its research, a record for the school.
National Technical Events

BigCommerce's latest apparel and footwear research report shows an increase in overall merchandise prices in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year. Data collected from the company's retail customers also shows a sharp increase in average order value. But angry customers can have a negative impact in the second half of the year. The authors of the report noted that deep discounts are possible and sales during the holiday season are still in doubt. Recent consumer surveys support this view.
A separate KPMG consumer survey found inflation (82 percent) was the top consumer concern, followed by delivery delays (50 percent). Due to inflation, shoppers surveyed said they would actively seek out retailers (60 percent). (up from 52 percent in last year's report), branded websites (up from 38 percent to 51 percent), and social media and influencer apps (up from 20 percent to 30 percent).
Those surveyed have become more "value oriented" this year, with a KPMG report showing that 78 percent of shoppers will take advantage of Black Friday sales. 49% expect new promotions this year, and 29% plan to shop on Thanksgiving.
However, fashion retailers and brands with BigCommerce customers are looking good in the first half of the year. The company said that in the first half of the year, the total cost of goods increased by 7.3 percent compared to the corresponding period of last year. By region, GMV increased by 8.1% in the Americas, 4% in EMEA and 6% in Asia Pacific.
Average order value, or AOV, increased 8.3% globally.
BigCommerce customers using the enterprise platform saw 10.8% GMV growth in the first half of the year, 3% growth in total order volume and 7.7% year-over-year growth in total order volume.
The report also noted that three key trends driving growth in the fashion sector are "the emergence of generative artificial intelligence capabilities to personalize user experiences, the influx of user-generated content to drive brand loyalty, and an increased focus on sustainability. Contribute to the industry. ... Growth."
In other BigCommerce news, global technology consulting firm Nisum is now a certified BigCommerce agency partner. The company said it will now offer its open SaaS commerce platform to BigCommerce, B2C and B2B brands as program participants.
The terms of the contract were not disclosed. This partnership comes at a time when retailers and brands are moving away from common technology platforms and towards more innovative SaaS providers. The goal is to provide a more dynamic and engaging shopping experience for consumers.
"This strategic partnership reflects Nisum's continued investment in the latest and most innovative trading technology to meet the evolving needs of its customers and today's competitive market environment," the two companies said in a statement. -Delivering class service... driving innovative digital solutions and scaling global transformation.
By moving to SaaS, we see the potential to deliver scalable, enterprise-class digital commerce solutions with a superior customer experience combined with our advanced data mining capabilities,” said Martin Levitt, Nisum's senior vice president of corporate development. World-class services in sustainability, security and business innovation.
As brands and retailers move from a one-size-fits-all approach to a best-in-class, best-in-class approach to modern technology stacks and the need for digital experience specialists, people like Nessom said Daniel Fertig, vice president of agency partnerships at BigCommerce. becomes more important than ever. and the Latin American market.

A campaign using artificial intelligence to impersonate former Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir has been viewed tens of thousands of times on TikTok, sowing further confusion online in a country ravaged by civil war.
An anonymous account has been publishing what it claims to be “leaked recordings” of the former president since the end of August. The channel posted dozens of clips, but the votes were fake.
Bashir, accused of organizing war crimes and ousted by the military in 2019, has not been seen in public for a year and is said to be seriously ill. He denies war crimes charges.
The mystery surrounding his fate after fighting that broke out in April between the current ruling army and a rival militia, the Rapid Support Forces, has added even more uncertainty to a country already in crisis.
Such campaigns are important because they show how new tools can spread fake content on social media quickly and cheaply, experts say.
“It’s the democratization of access to advanced audio and video manipulation technologies that worries me the most,” said Hany Farid, a digital forensics researcher at the University of California, Berkeley.
“Experienced actors have been able to distort reality for decades, but now an average person without technical skills can create fake content quickly and easily.”
The recording was broadcast on a channel called Voice of Sudan. The messages appear to be a mix of old clips from press conferences during the coup attempt, news reports and "leaked images" attributed to Bashir. The messages often claim to be from meetings or phone conversations and are as harsh as you would expect from a bad phone connection.
To verify its authenticity, we first consulted a team of Sudanese experts from BBC Monitoring. Ibrahim Haither tells us that this may not be new:
"His voice sounds like Bashir's, but he has been seriously ill for several years and I doubt he can speak clearly."
That doesn't mean it's not there.
We looked at other possible explanations, but this is not an old clip resurrected and it does not appear to be the work of an impressionist.
The most compelling evidence comes from former Twitter user X.
They recognized Bashir's first recording, released in August 2023. It shows the leader criticizing the commander of the Sudanese army, General Abdel Fattah Burhan.
Bashir's recording coincided with a Facebook live broadcast two days earlier by Al Insirafi, a prominent Sudanese political commentator. He is believed to live in the United States, but his face was not seen on camera.
The pairing doesn't sound the same, but the script is the same, and if you play both clips at the same time, they will be perfectly in sync.
Comparing audio waves shows similar patterns of speech and silence, Farid said.
There is evidence that voice conversion software was used to transcribe Bashir's speech. This software is a powerful tool that allows you to download an audio track that can be converted into different sounds.
After digging deeper, a pattern emerged. We found at least four other recordings of Bashir from the same blogger's live stream. There is no evidence of his involvement.
The TikTok account is purely political and requires in-depth knowledge of what is happening in Sudan, but there is controversy over who is profiting from the campaign. A consistent narrative is the criticism of the military commander, General Burhan.
The motive may have been to make the public believe that Bashir had played a role in the war. The channel may also attempt to legitimize a particular political point of view by using the voice of its former leader. It is not yet clear what this approach might entail.
Voice of Sudan denies misleading the public and maintains that the organization is not affiliated with any group. We contacted the account and received a response via SMS saying: “I want to express my voice and explain in my own way the reality that my country is experiencing.”
Attempts to imitate Bashir on a large scale could be seen as "relevant to the region" and perhaps a potential deception of the public, said Henry Azder, whose BBC Radio 4 series explores the development of synthetic media.
Artificial intelligence experts have long feared that fake video and audio recordings could trigger waves of confusion, potentially triggering riots and disrupting elections.
“What’s concerning is that this information may also create an environment where many people don’t trust real information,” said Mohammad Suliman, a researcher at Northeastern University’s Civil AI Lab.
How do you find audio distractions?
As we saw in this example, people should ask themselves questions before sharing images.
It is important to verify that the audio is published by a reliable source. However, tone is difficult to control, especially when content is shared through messaging apps. The challenge is even greater when there is social unrest, as is currently the case in Sudan.
The technology to create algorithms trained to recognize synthetic audio is still in the early stages of development, while the technology to simulate speech is already quite advanced.
After the BBC contacted TikTok, the account was suspended.
Amazon Unveils A 'smarter And More Conversational' Alexa Amid AI Race Among Tech Companies
Amazon has unveiled a series of gadgets and updates to its popular Alexa voice assistant, giving it more AI-generating features to better compete with other tech companies launching flashy chatbots.
At a demonstration Wednesday at the company's second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, Amazon's head of devices, Dave Limp, said the latest voice model will allow consumers to have more human conversations with a "smarter and more conversational" Alexa.
The company demonstrated a range of interactions through pre-recorded videos and a live demo in which Alexa responded to commands, wrote a poem, offered date night ideas and talked about a football game. Limp also demonstrated the voice assistant's ability to compose a text message, though the exchange with Alexa included some awkward pauses in which she had to repeat some commands twice before getting a response.
The company is also working on a "conversation-to-conversation" model that would, for example, allow Alexa to display human characteristics such as smiles and "woo-woo" during a conversation.
Amazon hosts its annual gadget event to showcase new gadgets to journalists and industry insiders before they officially hit the market. Among other things, the tech giant also offered a paid emergency service for Alexa that allows users to call for help without a phone, new Echo smart speakers and Amazon Fire tablets for children.
In August, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that Limp would step down after nearly 14 years at the company, where he oversaw innovation in Kindle readers, Amazon's Fire TV and Echo devices. Although the gadget division has produced a large number of gadgets over the years, it has not caught up with all of them. Think Amazon's limited-edition Alexa-powered microwave oven or the Astro roving robot, launching in 2021 with a starting price of $1,000.
The hardware division faced company-wide layoffs at Amazon a few months ago. The company has not announced a replacement for Limp.
According to Insider Intelligence, Amazon leads the US smart speaker market with approximately 64 million monthly users of its Echo devices. However, the market research firm predicts that the devices will lose some market share in the next few years due to the increasing number of smart speakers. Consumers are increasingly using their smartphones to access voice assistants rather than smart speakers.
For years, Amazon tried to increase consumer purchases through Echo devices, a dream that didn't quite materialize.
Amazon reported that 50% of Alexa customers used its devices to shop last year. Limp said Wednesday that more and more customers are using Alexa to shop each year. According to Adobe Analytics, consumers often use their smart speakers to play music, check the weather, and set alarms and reminders.
