House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan is subpoenaing executives of five of the nation's largest tech companies, demanding the companies turn over documents and other information, part of a broader GOP effort to investigate claims of ties between the Biden administration and Big Tech. "Congress has an important role to play in protecting and promoting fundamental principles of free speech, including investigating how private actors coordinate with government to suppress speech protected by the First Amendment," Jordan's office said in a statement. Republicans have complained for years that tech companies stifle conservative opinions and voices or limit their presence on major social media platforms to influence voters or influence elections in favor of one party.
Tech companies deny any bias, saying their policies strike a balance between users' right to speak up and hate, abuse and misinformation from their platforms.
The subpoenas seek information about the Biden administration's efforts to influence how these companies handle their content.
Jordan requested the documents before the House GOP took over last year.
"The House Judiciary Committee has made several attempts to contact the five companies since last December. Unfortunately, the companies have not responded appropriately to our requests," Jordan said in a statement.
He also chaired the new House Subcommittee on Federal Armaments.
