What Could Have Been: Outwardfolding Xiaomi Foldable Appears

Xiaomi is working on a foldable smartphone, a prototype seems to be on the way. This sketch is shared by Kuba Wojciechowski in Four Portraits of Real Life.

Xiaomi is working on a foldable device, the prototype has been leaked

The first image in the gallery below gives the best view of the phone. You'll quickly notice that this phone is very similar to Huawei's foldable device. Like the Mate X, Xs and Xs 2, this phone was never launched.

Xiaomi seems to have chosen to advertise in favor of a foldable device. So far, the Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold and MIX Fold 2 have been launched. Most people would agree that the folding approach is better, as it can protect the home screen.

However, foldable smartphones have their merits, as we discovered in our review of the Huawei Mate Xs 2. Well, this example looks a lot like that device.

The screen folds down to sit next to the vertical camera bar on the back. When folded this way, it sits flush with the camera strap. When unfolded, the camera strap provides a great place to hold your phone.

The device will have four cameras on the back

This particular prototype appears to have four cameras on the back. They are listed from largest to smallest, including some LG models.

Kuba Wojciechowski shared some more details on this example. The phone is said to be released in 2019 and should include a Snapdragon 855 SoC and an X50 5G modem.

He did not provide any information as to why the phone was not released. Durability can be a concern for Xiaomi, which is why the company chose the Mi MIX Fold model.

Whether Xiaomi will release something similar in the future remains to be seen. It's not out of the question, that's for sure.
