To kick off Tech World 2022 today, Lenovo shared a video showing two device prototypes that demonstrate the ability to fold an OLED screen like paper, giving you twice the screen of a handsome laptop.

In the past, laptops were less powerful and feature-rich than desktop computers and thus were only used for traveling or working in remote locations without a true permanent desktop. These days, unless you're a gamer or working on complex 3D animation, a laptop will suffice as your main computer, as long as you connect it to a large external display. unless you're me It's been 20 years since I switched to a laptop full time and to this day I refuse to turn it on to the big screen. I work from home, I tend to move from room to room while typing, and on several occasions when I tried to work with a laptop connected to a different screen, my workflow had trouble adapting to the changing screen position. It's always within my reach when I'm out of the office. So I stopped.

That's not to say I'm against using a big screen, I just want it where I want it, and this prototype from Lenovo seems to provide just that. Lenovo is no stranger to foldable OLED display technology, its ThinkPad X1 Fold was an innovative tablet-laptop hybrid with a semi-folding display and floating wireless keyboard.

It was a clever reimagining of what a laptop could be, but mostly as a way to reduce the space the device takes up unless the foldable screen is used. I think this new prototype makes better use of OLED in comparison. It looks like a normal laptop with a fixed touch keyboard and a flip-down screen underneath, but instead of folding the screen in half, it uses a slider mechanism that increases in height as the invisible OLED part slowly slides out. . The screen size below doubles the compact video workspace screen size without increasing the overall size of the laptop.

There are some obvious problems with the prototype. The laptop definitely weighs a lot less than most with the added slider mechanism, and when the screen is fully extended, the screen feels heavy and ready to be pushed back without a pair of hands on the keyboard to hold it the whole time. Some have suggested that a horizontally stretched 16:9 screen would be more useful and balanced.

Unfortunately, there's no word from Lenovo on whether this prototype will make it past the concept stage, but since we're still testing the unique benefits of OLED displays, it looks like this concept is close to hitting the mark. dough head
