Man Pleads Guilty To 2019 Shooting That Injured Texas Tech Football Player
The 28-year-old was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to shooting dead a Texas Tech freshman in 2019 and ending his football career.
Asia Devin Jackson, who was summoned to the Lubbock County Detention Center on April 28, 2019, pleaded guilty in the 364th Circuit Court to assault with a deadly weapon. The crime is a second-degree felony punishable by imprisonment for a period of two to twenty years.
After a plea deal with the Lubbock County Attorney's Office, the second charge was dismissed.
Jackson pleaded guilty to the murder of John Scott III on April 27, 2019. The woman suffered minor injuries.
The conviction follows the April 27, 2019 shooting of Lubbock police, which investigators discovered after Jackson was sprayed with water from a water gun, according to the warrant.
Lubbock Police were responding to reports of gunfire in the area, seriously injuring Scott. Keanna Pippkins was found with minor injuries at 900 S Street, where she had fled. Both were transferred to university medicine.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the shooter as a dark-skinned black man. An eyewitness told police he knew the shooter by the nickname "J".
Another police witness said he and others were playing with water guns in the pool when Jackson walked past them. Jackson said he poured some water and was upset. Scott, the 6-foot-3, 275-pound Hitchcock quarterback, tried to calm the situation by telling Jackson that people were trying to have fun at the pool party. But Jackson pulled the gun from his belt and spun it before firing multiple shots, hitting Scott and Pepkins.
Police determined that more than 200 people were in and around the pool at the time.

However, investigators obtained a photo of the shooter from the pool's security camera and compared it to old photos of Jackson in custody and determined that it was the same person, according to the memo.
Jackson turned himself in to police hours after authorities issued a press release identifying him as a suspect in the shooting, along with a photo of him.
Scott was released from the hospital a week after the shooting.
Scott signed with the Red Raiders in February 2018, was listed as a linebacker and was rescheduled for this season. According to Tech's website, he will miss next season as he continues to recover from his injury.
However, tech officials said Scott left the program shortly after filming began.
