20 Years Of BrokeAss Stuart? That Definitely Requires A Bonkers Party
For two decades, social media fanatic, relentless Bay Area promoter, bubbly self-promotion wizard, master keeper of all that is good and cheap here (plus a very charming man with a genuine interest in the city) Stuart Schoffman, aka Stuart the Rocks, has a strong presence on the scene. I can't even remember all the tricks: running for mayor, publishing business guides, TV shows, videos, stupid shows. She has lived many lives over the last 20 years and has explained all things "small, hot and beautiful" with her extensive website and boundless enthusiasm.
So it's no wonder he threw a big party (Thursday 13 at 18:30 Kate Robichaux and Brendan Getzell, East Bay comedians Stroy Moid and Chris Riggins, DJ Galen and the legendary Solar Sunset Soundsystem and many more parents and while you're at it, You can get Stewart's latest magazine, a collection of his 20 years of writing.Buy tickets here.
I kept the poor little bee busy for a minute talking about her longevity, her favorite budget things, and her big vacation.
48 Hills 20 years! Your writing career is enough to have a baby! You can be very literary! What 's your favorite thing to write about in our crazy city? What's your favorite job?
Did Stewart break in the ass ? My writing career is big enough to go to birthday parties!
Some of my favorite things to do is write about the strange and exotic nature of San Francisco. You know, it's just the things that happen here that make this place special. "Staying in San Francisco means..." and "Living in San Francisco means...going back" actually does a good job at that.
But I also love to write about things that are really useful for people. You know, they could actually use that information. One of them is "What do you do if someone has a mental health crisis down the road?" , which has spread because so much is happening in this city and people don't want to call the police unless absolutely necessary.
48 Hills Through your career as a science fiction writer passionate about San Francisco's technological change, what would you least like to write about?
Bass : I'm not going to lie, I must have written a lot in the mid-2010s, and I was overcome with dread to see the place I love irrevocably change. There was, and still is, much anger and pain at science fiction's rapid transformation of a strange wonderland where the working class can live and survive in the shadows of the technological dystopia of eviction and greed. Of course, this is an oversimplification of the whole thing, but much of my work has been devoted to this over the years.
So I think this goes a long way to say that the least favorite things to write about are evictions, homelessness, and local business closures. Unfortunately, these are also the things that get the most clicks.
48 Hills Since you're the king of local knowledge (well, I could be queen), give us some guidance, especially since things are a bit confusing and confusing right now.
Favorite place for cocktails
Favorite budget restaurant
Favorite place to listen to music.
Favorite free activity
Favorite thing that screams "San Francisco"
Well ! that's difficult!
Bar: Lots of drinks and great places to eat. I spent a lot of time on North Beach at classic places like Specs, Vesuvius, Columbus Cafe, and Tony Nik's. The bohemian feel is still felt.
Restaurant: Yamo is still probably the best budget restaurant in town.
Music: Greek Theatre. Does it get more luxurious than that?
What to do: I travel long distances every day, at least an hour. It is exercise, relaxation and exploration in one. And in which city is it best to do it?
The thing SF shouts: I love it! I might be obsessed.
48 HILLS I love your incredibly talented band, from Oakland comedian Stroy Moyed to the Beards' favorite choir. Tell us what inspired you to bring all these different artists together.
BAS We have incredible talent in the Bay Area and I want this to be a variety show that shows it. I worked with Jenn Stokes of the wonderful Stokes Live Entertainment (she sets the stage for Pride each year among other things) and helped bring the Broke-Ass Stuart website to life for just one night.
Many artists have become my friends and colleagues over the years. And the people you haven't met are very talented people who share their talents with the world. How not to ask them to join us?
48 Hills What are the hopes for the next 20 years for San Francisco and Brent Stewart?
I hope San Francisco will build a lot of affordable housing. I hope that BAS will continue to find a way to survive in this very difficult city. Did I mention my Patreon?
