Longhorns Offense Making Easy Work Of Texas Tech, Lead Red Raiders At Halftime
The Texas Longhorns lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders after a superb offensive performance by coach Steve Sarkissian.
The Texas Longhorns and the Texas Tech Red Raiders open their Big 12 match on Saturday at Lubbock's AT&T Jones Stadium, the 72nd ever meeting between the two teams.
Despite falling 14-10 early in the second quarter, the Longhorns scored two relatively easy goals to finish the match with a 24-14 lead. Texas had 272 total yards in the first half.
There were quick picks before the Texans attacked their first possession when the Cardinals went in three games, 62 yards. Kaylon Robinson set things up with a 31-yard return penalty and minutes later he closed the unit with a 35-yard catch and run.
But the quick action of the Texans ran into the methodical football of the Red Raiders in the first half. Tech's first two games were 31 against a weary Longhorns defense that began to inflict key penalties and allowed the Red Raiders to contend for Donovan Smith's fourth field goal.
The Longhorns responded with a field goal in the next round to take the lead 10-7, but the Texan defense had to go another long distance which didn't end well.
Smith led a 13-game 83-yard run that ended with Brooks' crown intact for 17 yards.
Seeking the big hit the Texans missed, Card tried to get it all in one game, but quarterback Reggie Pearson Jr. threw a pass in the air to intercept him. This was the second highest revenue in Texas for the year.
But Card made up for it after driving Tick three times on his next lap.
After a run initially dominated by footwork, strength and running, Bijan Robinson and RoShon Johnson finished a 39-yard walk to catcher Xavier Worthy.
Tech was quick on his next drive, giving the Hornets a chance to build a potential first-half lead.
When the Texans easily breached the Tech defense for 12 games and 82 yards, they did. After Johnson had 24 catches and a run, Bejan Robinson ran intact to land 7 yards giving the Hornets a 24-14 chance on his way to the locker room.
The Red Raiders will take the ball at the start of the first half.
