Health Tech Company Thorne Names Diffusion AOR

Health Tech Company Thorne Names Diffusion AOR

Thorne Healthcare appointed Diffusion as PR AOR.

Thorne and subsidiary Thorne Ventures launched an RFP process in September and considered nine companies, according to Tamara Strauss, Thorne's vice president of public affairs and corporate communications.

The company chose Diffusion in November and started working with the agency on January 1. Thorne has been working with Edelman since 2020.

The move follows a series of changes at Thorne over the past year. In August, investment firm El Catterton reached an agreement with Thrawn to acquire the company for $680 million.

El Catterton hired former Vitamin Shoppe CEO Colin Watts to lead Thorne in December.

The company embraced the expansion because "with our previous agencies, we found there were a lot of redundant verticals that were important to us, like consumer health and wellness," said Strauss, who worked with Thorne for two years. "We needed to tell a really great story, and we really needed the right partner to tell a story that's not always easy to tell."

Diffusion was PR AOR last year for smart baby monitor company Owlette and direct-to-consumer plant brand EasyPlant.

VP of Broadcast Michelle Sheng will lead the nine-person team working on the account.

Thorne typically does one brand campaign each year that diffusion will work on, Strauss said. The agency will handle media activations, consumer brand product communications, original research and surveys, and executive representation opportunities for Thorne & Thorne Ventures, which focuses on next-generation health products and services.

"Throughout the competition, we felt that Diffusion played to our strengths," Strauss said. "They asked the right questions, came up with the right ideas [and knew] how to be innovative while staying on brand."

Orbex Names Tech Entrepreneur And Exspace Agency Chief To Lead Next Stage For Startup

Orbex Names Tech Entrepreneur And Exspace Agency Chief To Lead Next Stage For Startup

Open Digest Editor for free

Orbex, the British rocket company that aims to be one of the first to launch a satellite from British soil, has bolstered its management team ahead of its upcoming fundraising, naming the former space agency boss and technology entrepreneur as its new chairman and chief executive. .

Phillip Chambers, co-founder of employee engagement platform Peakon, will become CEO of Orbex, while Miguel Bela Mora, former CEO of the Spanish Space Agency, has been named executive chairman of the nine-year-old space startup.

Chambers, who sold Peakon to Workday for $700 million in 2021, said his job was to take Orbex “from startup to scale.” I have a lot of experience with it.”

According to Martin Coates, the former CEO who served as interim CEO following the sudden departure of the company's founder, Orbex has grown rapidly in recent years and is about to enter the next phase of development. and former CEO Chris Larmour in April. “We couldn’t maintain the opening mentality,” Coates told the FT in a recent interview. “Now we really need to mature as an organization.”

Orbex is one of dozens of European companies aiming to meet growing demand for launch services in low Earth orbit (LEO), the region 2,000 km above Earth. SpaceX's reusable Falcon 9 rocket has reduced the cost of space launches and opened new commercial markets in LEO for activities such as Earth observation and broadband communications.

Orbex is developing the Prime Micro-Launcher, a 19-meter-long two-stage rocket designed to transport small satellites weighing up to 180 kg. The rocket is one of the smallest rockets under development in Europe and will be launched from a spaceport the company is building in northern Scotland. This is one of the facilities helping the UK Space Agency build a sovereign launch capacity.

However, according to Chambers and Coates, even before the first flight with Prime, Orbex discussed the possibility of developing a larger rocket to meet demand. According to analysts, this will require significant additional funds.

“Thoughts like that definitely happen,” Coates said. "This is a good start. This is the beginning of the career of this organization.”

“Logically it makes sense that if you want to bring prices down, all of this can only be done with a bigger rocket,” Chambers told the FT. “The question is how this will be supported financially.”

Chambers, who invested in Orbex when the company raised $40 million at the end of 2022. “Fundraising is something I’m pretty successful at,” he said. Orbex has raised £86.5 million after three rounds of fundraising, including support from the UK and Danish governments and the European Space Agency. At some point the company will have to raise more money. . . particularly from European investors," Chambers said.

Coates said the group may look for new funding next year as it expands the facility to meet its goal of launching within a month. However, he notes that this can be done in a variety of ways, including debt or asset-backed financing, as well as through equity rounds. In September, the startup posted an annual loss of £5.2 million for the year to the end of December 2022.

Orbex has not yet announced its initial launch date. But the team has confirmed six commercial contracts to launch satellites.

The company, which is headquartered in Scotland and has a design and testing center in Denmark, suffered several setbacks on the way to its first flight. The company was forced to take over the Sutherland spaceport in northern Scotland after Lockheed Martin abandoned the project in favor of another launch site, SaxaWord, in the Shetland Islands, off the north coast of Scotland. In December, the British Civil Aviation Authority granted SaxaVord a spaceport license.

Sutherland Spaceport's development efforts have also been hampered by environmental and Covid protests.

This story has been corrected to show that SaxaVord is located in Shetland, not the Hebrides as originally stated.

AI Revolutionized The Battlefield In 2023 As Israel, China Lead Development Amid Tech Arms Race

AI Revolutionized The Battlefield In 2023 As Israel, China Lead Development Amid Tech Arms Race

Artificial intelligence presents a whole different challenge and arms race that most people don't realize is taking place. Advanced and automated targeting capabilities, virtual weapon testing and AI-controlled vehicles represent just the tip of a large and rapidly growing iceberg.

The call for AI is so great that the Pentagon has about 800 unclassified AI-related projects to achieve “force multiplier” integration and gain an advantage over the competition.

This year gave the general public a better understanding of where the troops are with their incredible progress and where they are going next. Here are the most impressive insights and revelations about AI on the battlefield.

The goal itself

The barracks also has “advanced night surveillance capabilities” that allow tank crews to participate in close combat thanks to improved, enhanced data collection and sharing through a new, extensive and reliable “sensor infrastructure.” Ability to analyze the area in more detail.

“The 401st Armored Brigade views Barak Tank as a historic event and a national mission to achieve victory in the upcoming campaign,” said Col. Benny Aaron, 401st Armored Brigade commander.

“We have the opportunity to be the first armored brigade to receive the Barak tank. So we have a big responsibility and our mission is to fulfill it honestly.”

Try virtual weapons

Germany's biggest breakthrough in the development of military artificial intelligence flew under the radar but captured the imagination of weapons testers around the world. Berlin has unveiled a virtual reality weapons testing environment that can test weapons faster and faster than is possible in traditional environments. .

Developer 21 Strategies says this about its GhostPlay project: “By simulating complex military combat scenarios, new and advanced options for action can be developed. This allows flexibility and dominance to be achieved at strategic, tactical and operational levels.”

End of year. Here are the 6 biggest political stories of 2023

A key feature that differentiates the program is its use of “third-channel” algorithms, which, according to Yvonne Hofsetter, CEO of 21Strategies, creates a “human” decision-making process from the same departments.

According to Hofstetter, GhostPlay attempts to recreate environments “down to the last leaf,” which he found by compiling satellite images and a database of the environment, from habitat to vegetation.

One promising exercise the forum has been exploring recently is optimizing herding tactics, particularly attacks. The Army Development Office is working with the platform because of its ability to create specific areas where the munitions will be deployed.

Drone control

The AUKUS coalition, which includes Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, conducted military exercises in June that also used drones controlled by artificial intelligence. According to a British government press release, the drones detected and tracked military targets “in a simulated real-time environment.”

America and the terrible, terrible conference, not good, very bad

The Pentagon has said it wants to compete with China, which wants to develop autonomous drones, in the use of artificial intelligence drones on land, at sea and in the air.

The test, which took place in southwest England, involved a Challenger 2 tank, a Warrior armored vehicle and an unmanned Viking vehicle. According to the UK's Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSLL), the test helped the three partners reduce duplication and improve interoperability.

Britain's deputy chief of defense staff, Lieutenant General Rob Magowan, said in a press release about the trial. “Accelerating technological advancements will deliver the operational advantages needed to address current and future threats on the battlefield.”

Retired Rs. “The most obvious advantage of AI-controlled drones is that if they are pre-programmed, the swarm can perform its mission well without the need for remote control.

I'm looking forward to the future

Israel is at the forefront of developing and integrating artificial intelligence, which uses systems to quickly identify not only targets on the battlefield but also their location, creating exceptional combat capabilities.

“There is a perception in the IDF that there is enormous potential for leapfrogging,” Col. Uri, chief of information and artificial intelligence in the Digital Transformation Division, told Fox News Digital. “Anyone who wants to change something like that faces a big challenge.”

Strange Crimes 2023 features a thief who leaves behind a marble and a woman with a chicken family tree.

“The essence of digital transformation is the transformation of this organization,” Colonel Ory explained. "We're not about replacing people, but about improving and increasing operational efficiency. There's a limit to what you can do as a person."

The Israeli military announced in February that the force had begun using artificial intelligence in its operations and that new digital techniques had helped "200" during a 10-day operation that successfully targeted at least two Hamas leaders in 2021 to produce new targets. . Jerusalem Post.

“We take initial subgroups, count their inner circle (personal relationships), count associated characteristics, rank and order the results, and use input from intelligence officers,” AI chief Col. Yaffe said of the process.

China AI speed test

China is developing and integrating artificial intelligence at an alarming rate. Beijing is pursuing the concept of “multi-domain precision warfare,” which combines advances in big data and artificial intelligence to “quickly identify and integrate key vulnerabilities in U.S. operations.” According to the Pentagon report, forces will be pooled in the regions to carry out precision strikes.

Journalist Ivan Gershkovich has been jailed in Russia for “corporal punishment” as the Wall Street Journal works to free him.

The concept will help China develop “additional secondary operational concepts” focused on improving its ability to fight and win “future wars.” The country's latest five-year plan prioritizes these advances, which the Pentagon says include technologies related to "brain science," biotechnology, semiconductors, space, the deep sea and the poles.

James Anderson, who served as deputy defense secretary during the Trump administration, told Fox News Digital: "The scale, scope and complexity of China's military modernization programs are breathtaking." The report makes clear that Beijing remains committed to building up of a world-class military. the recent economic slowdown.”

China in 2010 China aims to be the world leader in artificial intelligence development by 2030, says a report that sees the technology as key to "modern warfare" and the Chinese Communist Party's future fighting style.

The Pentagon has acknowledged that China is already a world leader in facial recognition and natural language processing technology, but has remained "silent" about "some foreign capabilities" in hardware manufacturing, including cutting-edge factories, semiconductor chips and electronic devices. Design automation software.

“The U.S. lead in AI-related technologies is no reason for complacency, as it appears to be diminishing compared to China’s advances,” Anderson warned. "

“Artificial intelligence technologies will increase the speed and lethality of new military platforms and breathe new life into old platforms.” “In the coming years, AI-controlled air, sea, land and space platforms will proliferate and feature in every major military conflict between the USA and China play a key role.”

Texans Lead The Way In Energy Production

Texans Lead The Way In Energy Production

Texans are blessed. This is correct.

The good Lord has blessed us in many ways, especially with abundant natural resources. The same can be said for the United States and the people who transform these resources into the energy products we consume every day.

I have been fortunate enough to write this article since 2006, and have also worked for the Texas and Washington, D.C., energy associations since 1980. I am constantly amazed by the power and ingenuity of the explorers who explore and produce crude oil and natural gas. Pipelines that transport products, refineries that produce petroleum products, and retailers that sell them to the public.

It's not easy. It's challenging from start to finish, with bumps and checkpoints at every turn.

Over the course of this year, I've written articles about rising production in Texas and across the United States, about prices rising and falling and rising again, about the US president's efforts to shut down the oil and gas industry, and about OPEC's efforts to manipulate oil and gas production. the prices. An international conference on climate change ended with a declaration of the desire to “transition” away from fossil fuels.

I've also written about wind and solar energy. Texas has a lot of wind and sun. The wind blows and the windmills turn, especially in West and North Texas. Wind has become a major component of electricity generation in Texas. Solar energy will also make big strides in Texas in 2023.

Despite the expansion of wind and solar energy, many companies have reported financial and technical problems.

Electric cars have also attracted interest. Electricity sales will increase in 2023, but most consumers still lack confidence in reliability.

Texas is a leader in the energy sector. Houston is the energy capital of the world. Texas has a direct stake in the future of energy production and consumption. It was approved by the Texas Legislature, signed by Governor Greg Abbott, and the public voted to create the Texas Energy Fund to fill some of the gaps in electricity generation.

In April, I wrote that the EIA expects oil production and consumption to change little between 2023 and 2050. U.S. consumption of oil and other liquids will rise from 16 million barrels per day in 2022 to 21 million barrels per day in 2050, according to the EIA. This was stated in the annual energy forecast. Wind and solar energy will also have benefits.

Texans have been leaders in the energy industry for more than 100 years, and the future is bright, too.

Alex Mills is the former president of the Texas Energy Producers Alliance.

Michigan Tech Crowned Champion Of 57th Great Lakes Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WLUC) - The Michigan Tech hockey team is the 2023 GLI champion with a 4-3 overtime victory over Michigan State on Friday.

"I'm really proud of our guys because they found a way to win as a team," Michigan Tech head coach Joe Chauvin said. “We came out in the third, scored two goals, tied the game, and Blake, who blocked three shots, stood out.

The Huskies punched their ticket to the championship game against Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday. The Spartans did the same with a win over Ferris State.

It was the Huskies who struck first on the power play when Kyle Kakkonen found Logan Bithell, who passed the ball to Jack Works in the backfield to give Michigan Tech the lead.

The Spartans responded in the second half with a goal by Joey Larson. He blocked the shot, but the ball deflected off Larsson and he scored to tie the score at 1-1.

With seconds left in the second period, the Spartans tied the game again when Nikolas Mueller found Larsson in front of the net for his second goal of the night to put Michigan State up 2-1.

The Huskies came up short as Works ignited the Spartans' offense, which led to another goal when Kaukonen found himself on the ice to tie the score again at 2-2.

Michigan Tech scored again in the third period when Chase Pietillo fumbled and Workes put the ball away. He scored his third goal of the night to complete his hat trick and put Michigan Tech up 3-2.

The Spartans answered again when David Gouchardi threw a long pass to Red Savage. His top score of 90 lit the lamp and he leveled the score with three balls apiece.

The game went into overtime and both teams had several chances to tie the game, but neither the Huskies nor the Spartans could find the winner.

After overtime, in the second round of the shootout, Huskies kicker Ryland Mosley finished the job to give MTU a 1-0 shot lead.

Michigan State's last chance came in the form of former NMU Wildcat Joey Larson. However, Larson's shot was blocked by goaltender Blake Pietillo, sealing the Huskies as 2023 GLI tournament champions.

"Two wins in the third period shows our character," Huskies forward Jack Works said. "I think we're going to have a great second half and we're really excited."

The Michigan Tech Huskies are now 9-8-4 on the season.

The Huskies will play a friendly against Northern Michigan on Jan. 6 before taking on St. Louis. Thomas on January 11th and 13th.

Tech Must Lead On Carbon Neutrality

Tech Must Lead On Carbon Neutrality

This article is sponsored by Tencent.

Climate change is scary and it is impossible to predict the reality of what to expect. But we know that building a future that we and future generations will continue to live on depends on our science, our innovation, our creativity and our relentless optimism.

As a key driver of innovation, efficiency and productivity, the technology industry must play a leading role in the fight against climate change. Successfully overcoming the climate crisis will require rapid and widespread development of new climate technologies, matching or exceeding the pace set by the technology sector in recent decades. Only with this accelerated progress can we hope to effectively address the urgent and far-reaching challenges posed by the climate crisis.

That's why we launched TanLIVE on Tencent, a digital platform and tool designed to facilitate collaboration between the smartest and hardest working professionals in all areas of the climate fight. TanLIVE hopes to reduce climate change by acting as a catalyst, an enabler, and a catalyst for people and organizations to achieve community-wide climate goals.

Time flies: the 2030s and 2060s are fast approaching.

In the year By 2100, we've been on a horrendous path for predicting that the planet will warm by 4 degrees. But we have made a lot of progress. Policy changes, activism, technological advances and affordable renewable energy have achieved the goals of the Paris Agreement: limiting warming to 2 degrees Celsius by 2100 and targeting 1.5 degrees.

New information about the feasibility of a 1.5 degree acceleration is slowly emerging. Our carbon budget, or RCB, is about six years if we want to have a 50% chance of keeping warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, a team of climate scientists said in a recent paper in the journal Nature Climate Change. Current carbon emissions. . Chris Smith, a climate scientist at the University of Leeds, who contributed to the report's calculations, told Tencent: "Every tenth of a degree counts. The negative effects of climate change will come from increasing temperatures and that's exactly what happens. Be it permanent changes to the Earth system, for example, the collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet. It adds a few meters to global sea level rise.

Targets and dates vary. Long a leader in climate solutions, the state of California has pledged a $54 billion climate pledge to reduce air pollution by 71 percent, cut fuel consumption to less than one-tenth by 2021 and achieve carbon neutrality. 2045. Carbon footprint reduction programs in cities can play a significant role, especially for large-scale technology implementation of complex infrastructure such as sector integration and smart grids. In the year In April 2022, the European Commission announced the Cities Mission, under which 100 member cities will become "climate neutral and smart" by 2030. The power of this mission is astounding: even though cities cover only 3 percent of the Earth's surface, they are responsible. for 72% of greenhouse gas emissions.

China in 2010 It is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, when 80% of its energy will come from non-fossil fuels. Germany and Sweden aim for 2045; European Union, 2050. Hats off to Bhutan and Suriname, the only countries in the world to achieve carbon neutrality. In fact, both are carbon negative, removing more carbon than they emit.

The technology industry plays a leading role in each of these commitments, both at the grassroots level and in the transition to carbon neutrality. We will continue to work with urgency and explore the synergy between digital progress and decarbonisation. It is important to harness and maximize the full potential of ambitious and meaningful carbon neutrality programs and commitments.

At Tencent, we know that continuous improvement is essential to achieving the important and impactful climate events of this decade. In fact, we are committed to achieving carbon neutrality throughout our operations and supply chain and to produce 100% of our electricity from green energy by 2030.

Technology and death valley

When it comes to the pressures of technological progress, there is a well-known concept: the valley of death. New technology often begins with theoretical development, followed by research in laboratories or academic institutions. Early successes are characterized by practical applications and experimental projects carried out outside the laboratory. At this stage, scientists and academic institutions often lack the funds and resources to support basic and applied research. As a viable business enterprise, a technology startup attracts the attention of investors, including venture capitalists, private equity firms, and various financiers.

However, there is a critical phase when a new technology moves from laboratory success to real-world application. Today, risk and uncertainty are at an all-time high, and as a result, available resources are at an all-time low. Technologies that do not bridge this gap are at risk of withering away. This valley of death is particularly acute for climate technology, which takes longer to mature and develop than consumer technology.

The tech industry needs to work together in society.

Tencent sees this challenge as an opportunity for digital technology to help climate technology gain a foothold in the market. The carbon challenge requires major structural changes everywhere in the world; Achieving carbon neutrality depends on adopting better business models and more innovative ways of working. Our main goal is to accelerate progress towards carbon neutrality while identifying opportunities for positive social impact and social development. This means fostering collaboration across the ecosystem, including startups, investors, businesses, governments, NGOs and more.

Tencent's TanLIVE platform is designed for this. TanLIVE connects and empowers organizations working to achieve carbon neutrality through collaborative tools, including community networks, project listings, and proven technical and financial solutions for entrepreneurs, investors, and research institutions. Setting The Standard For AI: InfoTech Research Group Publishes Six Principles For Responsible Use

The IT firm's latest research outlines six core principles for responsible AI that organizations can adapt to suit their culture, values and needs.

TORONTO , Dec. 11, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The rapid adoption of AI technologies in organizations around the world is pushing business and IT leaders to create clear lines of defense that will define and drive the adoption of AI technologies. Recognizing this problem, the Info-Tech research group has published a new research agenda with six guiding principles titled "Developing the artificial frameworks that define artificial intelligence" . Without a well-structured strategy and enforcement of guidelines for the responsible use of AI, business outcomes can be detrimental.

Info-Tech Research Group's

The company's plan is intended to be a comprehensive guide that will help organizations define their AI principles that will form the basis of their future management policies and practices. By taking this proactive approach, organizations can ensure responsible and effective adoption of AI technologies, reducing risks and maximizing benefits.

“During previous technology revolutions, business and technology leaders have had time to plan an approach and oversee its implementation,” says Travis Duncan , director of research at Info-Tech Research Group. “With AI, the horse was already out of the stable before most organizational leaders began to understand the complexity of the opportunities and risks inherent in this technology. Before management established policies and governance, non-technical staff explored the performance benefits of ChatGPT and other similar tools, and technical staff formally or informally used AI models.

This exponential development of artificial intelligence technologies is further emphasized by research in computer science, which shows the importance of establishing the principles of artificial intelligence as a first step. However, the real challenge arises when these principles are integrated into the daily activities of technical and non-technical staff. Engaging key stakeholders and communicating the importance of AI principles is critical to bridging this gap and ensuring everyone is aligned with the organization's AI vision.

“To make matters worse, technology is advancing so rapidly every week that traditional approaches to policy and management are lacking,” Duncan explains. This indicator has made the use of responsible artificial intelligence techniques mandatory. Organizations must quickly understand AI solutions to combat new risks. Central to this are the Responsible AI Guidelines, which provide a framework for establishing safeguards for technical and non-technical staff. While working with AI technologies . "

Info-Tech explains in a recently published resource that with the right set of AI fundamentals, organizations can effectively manage the complexity of risk. The company outlines the following six principles for the responsible use of artificial intelligence, based on input from practitioners and industry. These principles can help IT leaders address AI challenges;

  • Valuation of fixed assets. Review and review industry standards, regulations and guidelines, company guidelines and other key considerations to ensure the approach complies with legal requirements and uses best practices.
  • Involve key stakeholders. Engage leaders and other key stakeholders to ensure their understanding and participation in the process of defining and validating the principles.
  • Develop principles for responsible behavior Al. Ensures that key stakeholders evaluate data and other considerations to determine key principles that will guide the development of responsible AI for the organization.
  • Review and validate the principles. communicate these principles to pilot projects and select use cases to demonstrate their relevance and effectiveness.
  • Put the principles into practice. Train technical and non-technical staff on the importance of AI principles and integrate them into the design, development, implementation, use and management of AI technologies.
  • Monitoring and updating. Regularly update and review the principles to ensure they remain relevant and effective over time.
  • These principles will help improve risk awareness and control. They also play a critical role in facilitating more informed and effective decision-making within organizations, ultimately leading to more responsible and successful AI adoption.

The Info-Tech research group notes that the benefits of adopting responsible AI principles are many. By applying these principles, organizations can increase the level of trust in their AI applications and therefore increase their adoption by users and customers.
