Investors have particularly focused on AI-based startups like Runway, which promise to reduce the cost and time needed to create special effects such as aging and film restoration. and Papercup, an AI-powered translation company.
“There's a lot of friction in content creation,” Peter Cione said of AI's new Strada platform, which he and his brother Michael use to improve production processes. “We want to tone it down.”
There's Canela Media, which raised $32 million to build a broadcast home for Latinos because it believes audiences are underserved by major broadcasters. “I kept reading about the streaming wars,” co-founder Isabel Rafferty told Business Insider. “But I'm Latino and my options are very limited.”
Animation company Toonstar, which specializes in producing QR shows, has secured the support of actress and producer Mila Kunis for a new NFT series.
“There are a lot of developments that I think resemble the early Wild West,” co-founder John Attanasio told Web3 Entertainment. “But there's so much development on the technology side that can create all kinds of services and these crazy interactive experiences that we're still just scratching the surface.”
Legion M has taken an unconventional approach to fundraising. The manufacturing startup raised funds via crowdfunding from ordinary people, who then had the opportunity to help decide which projects the company would pursue. The company calls its app "fantasy football for movie fans," through which users can influence the development process.
