Whats Delawares Tech Hub Superpower?

When the Delaware Technology Council held its launch event in March, the underlying theme of “Delaware being a strong technology powerhouse” seemed like a statement of fact ignored by the rest of the world and a collective push to do so.

Seven months later, at the inaugural Tech Ecosystem Conference, an invitation-only event bringing together the most influential members of Delaware's tech ecosystem, the state positioned itself as a leader in the biotech industry with representation in Mid-Desware. Pure hydrogen from the Atlantic Ocean. Precision Medicine Technology Center and Center for the Greater Philadelphia Area.

Some might say that Delaware still has a long way to go before it becomes a technology hub on its own. If the goal is to become an island, that may be true, but our regional allies risk a worse fate.

After all, technology is Delaware's future. However, technology is the future of every city. What makes Delaware a unique technology hub?

Chris Wenk, CEO of Technical.ly, asked this question during a breakout session at the conference, where a group of technology and business development professionals brainstormed notes and whiteboards.

Wink points out that qualities such as relative affordability, proximity to major cities, good colleges and universities, and workforce development programs can be attributed to any small city in the country.

So, what do we do differently depending on the players in the ecosystem?

Access to electricity

Delawareans' access to local, state, and national officials is a major problem. We might joke that we're so used to seeing mayors, governors, or senators around us that we don't even blink, but it's unusual to find acquaintances in a small town like this even "in the Capitol." In a country where a third of the population cannot name their state's governor, understanding and access to officials is essential, according to a 2018 Johns Hopkins University study.

New Castle County Executive Matt Mayer, who is running for governor of Delaware in 2024, attended the event to talk about the state of Delaware's tech ecosystem as a tech expert. If Meyer becomes governor, he will be one of the few governors with a degree in computer science (currently only one governor, Greg Gianforte of Montana, has a degree in computer science).

“The interesting thing now is that if you get a degree in software skills, you can go anywhere in the country, anywhere in the world,” Mayer said. “And you can go into any industry, because in the 1990s when I graduated, there was a software industry [in Northern California]. Now every industry is a software industry.

"Building the legacy of being first"

Other unique assets discussed include:

• Business-friendly tax structure. Wilmington is America's corporate capital, and no other city can say the same. The problem is that most companies that choose to list here, don't think about operating here and contributing to the local economy (to be fair, millions of companies are incorporated in Delaware, so they can't all be here).
• Proximity – Many small towns are located close to one or two larger cities, but Delaware is conveniently located hours from New York, D.C., and Baltimore, while still being part of greater Philadelphia.
• A diverse population. Delaware's diversity is typical of most East Coast cities, but if you look at the country as a whole and compare Wilmington to other cities of similar size (about 50,000 to 100,000 people), it is clearly more diverse than smaller cities like Lincoln. Or California or Newark. ,Ohio.
• Access to Nature – Every neighborhood in Wilmington has beautiful parks, rivers, and trails nearby. Also consider part of Delaware's Brandywine Valley, with its rolling hills, flat farmlands, lakes and beaches. (Of course, most places have nature nearby, but Delaware is so gorgeous and underappreciated.)
• Progressive politics. Delaware is majority Democratic, and many state legislators are Republicans. This policy is progressive and pro-business.
