Tech Deck Tricks: Xiaomi Is The Latest Android Brand To Beat Google Pixels Update Timeline [U]

Google Pixel phones have long been praised for their quick updates, but the length of support is getting shorter and less attractive. After Samsung abandoned its Google Pixel update policy a few years ago, Xiaomi is now extending support to at least one device.

With the launch of the Redmi K60 Extreme Edition, Xiaomi has set a precedent for itself by offering five years of updates and four major Android OS updates for this new device. Xiaomi confirmed the new policy in a post on Weibo (via Android Authority ).

This is really good news as Xiaomi will stick to the current Android update policy. Samsung offers four years of operating system updates and five years of security updates for its Galaxy flagships. Meanwhile, Google Pixel phones get five years of security updates, but only three years of major Android updates.

However, Google's policy may change soon. We recently learned that Google is changing its policy regarding the Pixel 8 series and rejecting Samsung's offers.

Given Xiaomi's new policy, the question remains whether the same conditions will apply to future Xiaomi and Redmi devices. Xiaomi devices like the Xiaomi 13 series are currently rated for three years of Android OS updates and five years of security updates. The Xiaomi 13T is expected to have a lot in common with this Redmi device, so its release (expected at the end of this month) could be the next to receive this new support program.

Update 9/7 Xiaomi confirmed through PR director Daniel Dejar that this new update policy will apply to the Xiaomi 13T and 13T Pro, suggesting that this policy will also apply to future releases.

And in addition, Xiaomi also did not specify how often the updates will be released.
