Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Leak Shows Bad News For The Foldable

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 Leak Shows Bad News For The Foldable

Samsung hasn't changed the design of the Galaxy Z Fold since the release of the second-generation model in 2020. So, oddly enough, we expect the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 to look a little like the company's current foldable flagship.

But a new leak from reliable whistleblower Ice Universe shows how little change can be expected. The leaker shared what appears to be the frame of the upcoming Z Fold 5 and the current generation. Other than moving the flashlight to the right of the camera cutout, nothing seems to have changed.

In a follow-up tweet, Licker superimposed the two frames. With some red lines, Ice Universe indicates that the width of the external screen of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 will not change either.

In other words, this time around, we can't expect the phone's aspect ratio to change to a foldable form. It will be tall and thin, unlike the recently announced Google Pixel Fold, which has a more traditional folding design.

It's a shame, because the existing easy layout makes typing a bit more difficult, and opening it up to send a quick text feels like an awkward and unnecessary extra step.

However, despite complaining about the closed aspect ratio, the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is a beautifully designed phone and a solid platform for Samsung to make small, iterative changes. We hear that the phone will be thinner and lighter this time around, thanks to the use of the new waterdrop hinge, for example.

Also, the phone's frame doesn't say anything about what's inside. We expect the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to have the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor for the expected speed boost, perhaps more than expected. The popular benchmarks also show a significant increase in the performance of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, indicating that Samsung has made progress in optimizing its chip for the "Galaxy".

However, if you're starting to find Samsung's foldable design a bit dated, next year could bring some good news. The leaker believes the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 will feature "significant form factor changes." It remains to be seen what form these changes will take, but if that sounds exciting to you, it might be worth skipping this generation and instead look at what Samsung has in store for 2024.
