OPPO had plans to develop its own mobile processor, but that ultimately wasn't to happen. The company confirmed it was working on a dedicated SoC in early 2020, and earlier in the year it was reported that the first product would launch in 2024.

Finally, OPPO will not make its own processor

After years of work on its processor, why did OPPO decide to take such a drastic step? Well, the reason OPPO is sharing this with the public is because of… economic and global market uncertainties.

This may seem like a big deal, but the competition in the market is always fierce. The more competitors we have, the better for the industry as a whole. They encourage each other to do better and thus provide us with a better product. More competition also lowers prices.

So it's a shame that didn't happen. In general, OPPO has done a good job over the years. The NPU proved to be very capable, as did the company's MariSilicon Y Bluetooth chip.

To be clear, OPPO is shutting down the ZEKU chipset unit used to manufacture the MariSilicon chip. Not only does this mean we won't have a proper mobile SoC, but also that OPPO won't make any MariSilicon devices at all. However, all pipeline products designed to use MariSilicon devices will continue to be used.

A future revival of this project is by no means out of the question

It will definitely be interesting to see what OPPO can do with such a mobile processor. But that's not going to happen, at least not now. Nothing prevents OPPO from implementing this project in the future.

After that, the company will focus on several other aspects of the business. aspect that made it so popular in the first place. The company hasn't given any details about this, but the smartphone business is doing quite well for OPPO.

The company is successful in China and other markets and is constantly growing. Its foldable smartphones are hugely popular, although only a single phone was launched outside of China earlier this year.

The OPPO Find N2 Flip was launched globally, while its sister model is held in high esteem outside of China, although it hasn't launched anywhere else, at least for now. We are sure that apart from the news about its mobile processor, OPPO has interesting plans for the future.

After OPPO abandoned MariSilicon, plans for a mobile SoC made Android headlines.
