Heres How The New Google Pixel Fold Stacks Up To Samsungs Galaxy Z Fold 4
Google took a page from Samsung's book and turned it into a foldable phone. In fact, the recently announced Google Pixel Fold appears to have received some nods from the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, which was unveiled at Google I/O 2023 alongside the Pixel 7a and Pixel tablets. Folding devices are like Google. Choose a design philosophy, an open phone for a tablet, and an equally high price of $1,799.99. But, if you look closely, you can see some significant differences.
Here we compare two foldable extreme flags against each other to compare their specifications and features on paper. While Samsung will unveil the fourth iteration of the Galaxy Fold, Google will be the world's first foldable phone when the Pixel Fold launches at the end of June. But can Google compete with the first generation products?
Until we get a chance to fully review the new Pixel Fold, let's see how they work, at least on paper.
Google Pixel Fold vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: Playing in inches and aspect ratio
Among the important things that make these Android phones stand out are their size and aspect ratio. At first, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 was very tall and thin, and then it became a square device. The Pixel Fold, on the other hand, has a wider, smaller outer screen, giving it a more traditional open phone feel. On display, however, the Pixel has a wide, chunky fit.
Their internal screens are actually 7.6-inch OLED displays, but the difference in feel and size comes down to that ratio. The Pixel Fold's 6:5 aspect ratio allows for a 5.8-inch external display, while the Galaxy Z Fold 4's 21.6:18 aspect ratio allows for a taller and bezel-less 6.2-inch display. It's about half an inch bigger, but on the outside, the Pixel Fold feels more comfortable than a regular phone.
Pausing in the dimensions department, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is a bit thin, but not when folded. The Pixel Fold has a very narrow gap between its curved halves, which looks good (for a Pixel device), at least in pictures.
Now, about the other key specs, for most people the two biggest deciding factors when buying a new phone are camera and battery life. While the camera performance beats the specs, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 undeniably has a much larger main sensor, which usually means better low-light performance. But in terms of battery life, the Pixel Fold has a bigger capacity at 4821mAh. Of course, if software optimization is not true, it may not be as useful as it seems.
In terms of other features, the processors of the two phones are very different; The Galaxy uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, while the Pixel Fold uses Google's own Tensor G2 (the same chip as the Pixel 7 generation). Another interesting difference between the two is support for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 stylus, as it is compatible with the Samsung S-Pen Fold Edition (an optional $50 purchase), but the Pixel Fold is only for your fingers. Apart from the differences, the phones are very similar in terms of ports, fingerprint sensor placement (both with power button), water resistance, RAM and storage capacity.
Here is a more detailed description of all the specifications of both devices side by side.
what do you think? Does the Pixel Fold look like Google's first attempt? Are you willing to shell out $1,800 for it, or is the Galaxy Z Fold 4 a better sell? Samsung's flagship foldable model is getting decent price cuts, though none of them are more consistent and deep than what we saw with the Pixel 7 generation. Perhaps the Pixel Fold will follow suit.
