A 5minute Q&A With The Tech Startup Changing How Talent In Southeast Asia Are Matched With Their ‘dream Jobs
Every day you come across an exciting and (let's say) exciting recruiting firm, so when we hear about Resonance, it's the startup itself that helps job seekers find jobs at startups and other forward-thinking organizations. .
Resonance takes a slightly different approach to job applications, emphasizing company culture and looking to "match" talent and employer to ensure they both fit together. They don't directly apply for jobs like traditional recruiting sites, but even if you show interest in one of their job postings, you still get a "rank" to see if the company you're interested in is available. Be one of them. You want to work. To do this, applicants are asked to fill out a questionnaire asking whether they want to work in an exciting or challenging work environment, whether they want to multi-task or are a specialized type of worker in one area. I describe your work style and values etc.
Curious about how this innovative recruiting approach came about, Coconuts sat down with Resonance's co-founders to learn more about the company's history and their thoughts on culturally connected mental health. And why working at a startup could be a step forward in today's gig economy.
Coconut: Hello! Can you quickly introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Justas Rinkevičius. I have lived in Bangkok for six years. I have been an entrepreneur for most of my life, running businesses in Europe and now Asia.
What is the origin of resonance? How did this idea come about and why did it start in Bangkok?
Resonance is a product of Whatnot Startup Studio, which I created with my long-time partners Kas and Matas upon arriving in Bangkok. We are building a new startup with the goal of shaping the future of business in Southeast Asia.
The idea for Resonance came from our own frustrations when we started a small business in Bangkok. The most important part of any startup is the people you hire. The nature of startups is that you are not 100% sure of what you are building early on, things change quickly and you need to adapt and maybe change the direction of your business. Only your team can be strong. At this very difficult startup stage, you need to trust the people around you.
Additionally, we have seen a significant difference between talent and organization when using traditional talent acquisition methods. Companies and talent seem to ignore the importance of the right culture. (As a result) they have to work with people they don't like, with products they don't buy themselves, they often make suggestions they don't believe in.
And, ultimately, startups lose the talent war to big local firms because they outstrip big salaries and bonuses.
That's why we created Resonance. This is our way to challenge the forces and help visionary young companies find ambitious young professionals so that together they can build an organization that defines the future of Southeast Asia.
So let's start with the basics. There are many jobs available. How would you describe what sets Resonance apart from the competition in 50 words or less?
We only work with young, promising startups and organizations. Our unique algorithm helps match the right candidate with the right organization.
Now let's say you're an employer who wants to post a job listing on Resonance. Can you walk us through the process? Can anyone post a list or "check" the company before proceeding?
Let's start with an online assessment in the form of a questionnaire. A series of interesting short questions allow us to better understand the company's personality and overall vision. We will then call or contact our organizational analytics team where we will continue our in-depth analysis. And voila! We are ready to introduce you to the best talents of Southeast Asia.
On the other hand, let's say you're a job candidate. What happens after you complete the questionnaire? Do you have a database of candidates to contact when suitable openings become available? How do you decide which candidate is right for a position?
Like any company, we have a simple screening process for talent who wants to join our talent pool. Our team and algorithms go to work to find the best job opportunities that suit your needs.
Speaking of choices, we're big fans! Of course, this is more than research on other jobs that only ask for the basics, but it's important to consider the information you're asking for when you're looking for a job. How did you come up with these questions?
In fact, we went through several iterations to create and test the questionnaire. We created questions based on various psychological studies and theoretical references. After several rounds of testing, additional patterns were identified, and our hypothesis was validated in terms of cross-cultural fit. Because culture is about human values, beliefs and attitudes... they are not easy to measure and measure. We strive to understand people's cultural preferences and identify group dynamics in work contexts. There is no good or bad culture and each team has its own dynamics and chemistry. What we're trying to do is help people evaluate how well they fit and fit with their current team and what new dynamic skills they can bring to the team and move the team forward.
In recent years, there have been stories of workers who quit their jobs (sometimes regular jobs) because the epidemic made them think they were really happy where they were. Of course, this goes back to the broader topic of making sure you fit in with the company culture and the importance of looking after your mental health in the workplace. In our experience, these factors are (yet) underestimated in the Southeast Asian talent pool. Can you explain a bit more about how and why job seekers should look for companies that are right for them (rather than high-paying companies or big firms )?
I think that your high salary and the high price in the job market is the situation where you can find the right job now. A job that suits your general situation allows you to devote 100 percent of your time to the job at hand, which accelerates your education and makes you more visible in the job market. A small community of peers can easily recognize your contributions, allowing you to build a large portfolio of references and experience, and making it much easier to find your next position if your current position doesn't work out.
Improved mental health is the result of a functioning community where everyone connects and supports each other. Managers can see and show when you can talk to everyone in person. Unfortunately, this is not always the case in large organizations.
Most startups offer stock options to the talent they hire. The added incentive to work hard is huge, as is a takeover by Google, Grab or a similar company or an IPO before payday. So, if you choose your career wisely, the financial benefits can be more than what you get from working in the corporate world.
Some applicants may be reluctant to join a startup rather than an older, established company for a variety of reasons (actually, larger companies may charge more, or people may fear that the startup will fail). What advice can you give to people who have this fear? What are the benefits of working in a startup?
Acknowledgment of Startups The best place to work for the next generation of employees is already here. A recent example is [Siam Commercial Bank] SCB, which split into SCB and SCBx, the latter being a more dynamic entity focused on being a technology company with healthy risk appetite. This goes to show that even if you think a corporate job would be better for you, working early in a startup can help you quickly land a better position at a company like SCBx.
Otherwise, if you are interested in making an impact in your work, you like flexibility and autonomy, you want to grow quickly, you want to be fair in what you do, you like small communities and you hope to become a young leader. . - Working on a startup is the best way to do it all.
