Mike Morrell, President Barack Obama's former acting director of the Central Intelligence Agency, said in a newly transcribed interview with congressional investigators that Blinken called to talk about Hunter Biden's laptop because the new secretary of state "wanted to retire." Among the spectators, "the Russians somehow won" in the saga.
Former CIA Director Hunter Biden's letter was not "forged" by Blinken.
"He asked me a specific question here. You know, he has to tell you what he meant when he asked me," Morrell said. "You know, my point of view was, if I was fine, well, I thought the Russians were somehow involved, I think it will come out, but that's a guess, right? I don't know his intentions.
Morrell also told House investigators that he had no intention of writing Hunter Biden's laptop letter on Oct. 19 before the Oct. 17, 2020 phone call with Blinken, and testified "yes" and "absolutely" when asked if he had a phone call. Blinken , then a senior adviser to Joe Biden's 2020 campaign, "was what activated that purpose in you."
Morrell also testified that one of the two reasons he helped write the letter was to support current President Joe Biden "because I want him to win the election" against former President Donald Trump.
The explosive revelations came to Blinken in a letter sent Thursday by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-OH). As the Democratic rival in the House stated in a press release.
The October 2020 laptop letter contributed to the baseless story that Hunter Biden's laptop stories were nothing more than Russian disinformation, which was happily received by the Biden 2020 campaign and shared on the laptops by some of the letter signatories. Hunter Biden himself tried to falsely claim that the intelligence community had concluded that his laptop was offensive to the Kremlin campaign.
Jordan and Turner told Blinken that Secretary of State Morrell "played a role in launching this ad by serving as an adviser to the Biden campaign" and that "your campaign, according to Morrell, wanted to get a response from Morrell." A story in the New York Post triggered the events leading up to the public announcement.
On Friday, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel declined to answer questions about the Blink controversy, saying, "This is not a State Department matter and I have no comment from the State Department."
Morell explained that "Tony and I were very close," including working together in the Obama administration when Morell was deputy director of the CIA from 2010 to 2013, as well as acting director of the agency in 2011 and 2012. 2013
"When he was in our government, when he was the national security adviser to the vice president and then when he was the deputy national security adviser to President Obama, I was the person he went to with questions like that," Morrell said in a segment. . . Morrell was also asked about the Blink case, specifically, "did you direct, suggest or encourage you to write any letter or statement about it?"
The organizer of the paper notebook replied that "my recollection is that he didn't" and "my recollection is that he asked me what I thought."
Morell was told that Blinken said "the campaign can help with that" and that Blinken asked him, "Can you do something we can use?"
"He didn't say that," Morrell replied. "I don't remember him saying that."
Jordan and Turner later wrote that on the same day as the Blinken-Morrell call, Blinken "also sent Morrell an article published in USA Today and that the FBI was investigating whether Hunter Biden's laptop was part of a disinformation campaign." . Jordan and Turner told Blinken. "At the bottom of the email to Morrell is the signature of Andrew Bates, the Biden campaign's director of rapid response." Bates is now Biden's deputy White House press secretary.
Joe Biden's 2020 presidential campaign quickly dismissed the laptop story as a Russian disinformation operation. In an October 2020 debate with Trump, Joe Biden called the story "garbage" and part of a "Russian conspiracy" after the New York Post published emails implicating his son.
Mark Polimeropoulos, a former CIA chief operations officer, said in 2020 that he and Morel helped draft the letter.
Morrell called Biden campaign chairman Steve Riccietti after the Oct. 22 presidential debate, thanking him for "spreading the word," according to the congressional letter. Ricchetti is now an adviser to President Joe Biden.
The call to Morrell was made by another signer of Hunter Biden's laptop letter, Jeremy Bash, who then accused Ricchetti. Bash, a former CIA and Pentagon chief of staff, was appointed by Biden to the president's intelligence advisory board last year. Bash suggested on TV in October 2020 that the laptop story was "Russian disinformation".
In a debate with Trump in October 2020, Biden said: "There are 50 former national intelligence officials who have accused me of Russian collaboration. Four, five of them said they were former heads of the CIA. "Both sides say what they said is a bunch of garbage."
Dozens of former intelligence officials said he cited a Politico report about the letter in an article titled "The Hunter Biden Story Is Russian Intelligence." The title was a little misleading, as the letter never directly referred to the story as "Russian disinformation."
