Xiaomi Gives Wear OS Another Shot With The Watch 2 Pro

Xiaomi Gives Wear OS Another Shot With The Watch 2 Pro
  • Xiaomi's second Wear OS smartwatch is the Watch 2 Pro, which runs Wear OS 3 with the MIUI overlay.

  • The smartwatch is based on the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 platform and has 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.

  • It has a rotating crown and adjustable pushers and can be paired with a leather or fluoro rubber strap.

  • The smartwatch will go on sale next week starting at €269 ($284).

Xiaomi is currently a big player in the smartwatch segment and it all started with the Mi Watch launched in 2019. The smartwatch is powered by Snapdragon Wear 3100 and has a version of MIUI under Wear OS. This particular product never made it outside of China, and when Xiaomi launched its wearable portfolio globally, it used a custom operating system that had nothing to do with Google.

That's why it's surprising that Xiaomi has teamed up with Google to launch the Watch 2 Pro. The watch runs Wear OS 3 out of the box, and while Xiaomi has again added the MIUI layer, the overall look shouldn't be the same. Different from standard Wear OS smartwatch. Xiaomi touts Google integration as a highlight, and the fact that the smartwatch will work globally with Wear OS makes it a credible alternative to devices like the Galaxy Watch 6.

In particular, the device is interesting because Xiaomi is based on the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 platform with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of memory. You get Wi-Fi AC, Bluetooth 5.2 and dual-band GPS/GNSS connectivity, apart from the usual sensors, a bioelectrical impedance analysis sensor and a 495mAh battery with magnetic charging.

On the screen is a 1.43-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 466 x 466 and a resolution of up to 600 nits. In terms of design, Watch 2 Pro offers a rotating crown with two adjustable buttons and the case is made of stainless steel.

The watch comes with standard lugs that allow for easy strap changes, and you can pair it with a leather or fluoro rubber option as standard. Xiaomi's custom plugins include sports modes - more than 150 - and you also have the option to measure body composition data.

Xiaomi will launch the smartwatch globally starting at just 269 euros ($284). This applies to Bluetooth models; Xiaomi sells a mobile version with eSIM connectivity, available for 329 euros ($349). No word yet on when it will go on sale, but the Watch 2 Pro certainly has the hardware to compete with the best Android smartwatches.
