Airbnb Says It's Using AI To Weed Out Guests Who Throw House Parties
Airbnb's CEO says the company uses artificial intelligence to determine which guests are most likely to host a house party.
Its technology analyzes billions of guests to find out which ones make the party and which ones don't.
They also use artificial intelligence to check if the list of images sent by the host matches the satellite images.
Airbnb's CEO said his company uses artificial intelligence to determine which guests are most likely to host a house party before booking, Bloomberg reported Monday .
Brian Chesky gave an interview to Bloomberg about how the company plans to use artificial intelligence to solve some of its problems, including a long battle with guests who throw disruptive parties in rental homes, despite the company's strong anti-partisan stance .
"We used machine learning techniques to look at the last 1.5 million guests and see who were partiers and who weren't," Chesky told Bloomberg. "If you try to do it with the human eye, you might not see any patterns, but AI can analyze over a billion data points, find a lot of common features, and create a set of rules."
He explained that if a booking attempt raises concerns, "we will stop them or ask them for more information until we feel comfortable with you or until we feel comfortable with you."
Chesky added that AI will also be used to verify that images of listings submitted by hosts match satellite imagery to help eliminate fake listings on the platform.
The company permanently banned house parties in June 2022 after testing a temporary ban during the pandemic in 2020, when some guests "chosen to behave at home in bars and clubs that were sometimes rented through our platform."
Booking filtering technology will also be introduced in December 2022 to prevent some guests from booking the entire house for one night unless they have received positive reviews from other hosts.
Chesky did not disclose the technical details of the company's AI technology, but using AI to predict the behavior of guests who break the rules could raise questions. While AI models, for example, can fairly accurately predict crime in some neighborhoods, researchers have found that they can also perpetuate racism.
The CEO is optimistic about how AI will change Airbnb , telling Bloomberg's tech conference in June that the platform will be the "ultimate gatekeeper of AI" to help users find the best rentals and experiences that suit them.
