Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus Brings This Premium Feature For Fraction Of The Price
Oppo's flagship Find X6 Pro has one of the best zoom cameras on any smartphone this year. Periscope lenses give you access to new angles that you wouldn't normally be able to get with a standard or ultra-wide camera. However, this feature is limited to flagship phones such as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Xiaomi 13 Pro and Oppo's Find X6 Pro.
And for this you should pay attention to the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus. This is one of the rare phones that offers a Periscope camera for less than $660/INR 55,000.
The Reno 10 Pro Plus features a 64MP telephoto lens with f/2.5 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS), along with a 50MP primary camera and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle sensor. It supports 3x optical zoom and 120x digital zoom, and I got impressive results with 6x zoom and usable images up to 30x. If you love photographing pets, attending concerts, or photographing architecture, the Periscope camera is a real treat.
Last week I went to the Lucky Ali concert in Delhi and took my Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus with me. As my primary phone, I use the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which offers 3x optical zoom and only 15x digital zoom; I was almost disappointed. But I wasn't sure if the Reno could beat the iPhone in digital zoom. Here's a comparison of the two.
Here are three possibilities. Firstly, Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus offers 30x digital zoom, which is 2.5 times better than competing phones. Secondly, a Reno image at 30x looks better on social media than an iPhone image at 15x. Thirdly, Oppo uses artificial intelligence to enhance the image, which can be seen in the details of the singer's face. The first image looks sharp (still lacking detail) and the 30x zoom can be used. I posted two photos in a row on Instagram Stories and the Reno 10 Pro Plus got a vote of confidence.
It's surprising how good the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus' digital zoom is for its price. However, it also makes excellent portraits (example below).
Edge detection, color and background blur are top notch. I think Oppo is using the same camera algorithm in the Reno 10 Pro Plus as in the Find X6 Pro. The images, although not as detailed as those of flagship devices, are surprisingly good. As far as ultra-wide-angle cameras go, they're average at best.
Enough talking about the camera and the rest of the phone.
The Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus features a 6.74-inch FHD+ AMOLED display and supports a 120Hz refresh rate and 1,400 nits peak brightness for HDR content on Amazon Prime. I appreciate the bright screen offered here, as well as the good stereo speaker setup. Moreover, its slim design makes it comfortable to hold. At 194 grams, it's not lightweight, but it's definitely one of the lightest phones to come with a Periscope camera.
The Reno 10 Pro Plus is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset built on TSMC's 4nm manufacturing process. It comes with 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UV 3.1 storage. With daily use, I didn't notice any stuttering or lag. For gamers, Reno 10 Pro Plus can support Ultra HD graphics and Ultra frame rates in BGMI. However, it is worth noting that the phone gets warm after 30 minutes of playing with HDR graphics and extreme frame rates.
The phone runs Color OS 13 based on Android 13. The only annoying thing about this phone is getting notifications from apps that I didn't even touch after setting up the phone, like Game Center and App Market. While this can be easily turned off, I don't like receiving random notifications throughout the day.
You also have a lot of non-Google apps and games pre-installed, which some might consider bloatware. However, some may find apps like Facebook, Dailyhunt, PhonePe and Snapchat useful. On the other hand, I like the animations and multitasking of Color OS.
Oppo Reno 10 Plus is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery. In my experience, with moderate use it lasted all day, but I found it difficult to get through a day when I was taking a lot of photos or using navigation a lot. However, this wasn't a big deal as it can be fully charged from empty to full power in 25 minutes using the included 100W SuperVOOC charger.
Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus. How does this compare to competitors?
If you're looking for a gaming phone, the iQOO 11 is a better deal, while the OnePlus 11 seems more balanced. However, if you want a decent camera with a zoom but can't spend more than Rs 55,000, then this is the phone for you.
The Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus offers a great display, a comfortable feel in the hand, good performance and battery life, and an impressive telephoto lens. You should take the time to uninstall apps you don't use and turn off notifications from the App Market and Game Center. But at INR 54,999, the Reno 10 Pro Plus is a bargain.
