  • HP introduces a foldable computer called the Specter Fold.
  • HP says the Specter Fold is the world's smallest and thinnest 17-inch foldable computer.
  • The HP foldable computer will be available in October for $5,000.

Companies like ASUS and Lenovo have been trying to sell customers on the idea of foldable laptops for several years. Like Samsung, Google and other companies are trying to attract customers to the foldable phone market. HP is now joining the fray with its own foldable computer, the HP Specter Fold. While HP's first entry into this market looks promising, it may be overshadowed by its price.

According to HP, the Specter Fold claims to be the world's smallest and thinnest 17-inch foldable computer. However, for this convenience, this foldable computer costs $5,000. This price makes the Specter Fold more expensive than any other laptop of its kind currently on the market.

However, the Specter Fold has more to offer than its small and thin size. HP helps justify that high price with the laptop's design and features. The Specter Fold has a 17-inch OLED touchscreen display with a resolution of 2.5K (1920 x 2560). This display offers 400 nits of standard brightness and 500 nits of HDR brightness. It also uses a 3:4 aspect ratio and is the first folding screen to be IMAX Enhanced certified.

IMAX Enhanced certification means that a device meets certain audio and video quality standards set by IMAX. For the Specter Fold in particular, this means the screen can display content in IMAX aspect ratio, maximum HDR brightness matches IMAX standards, and images are displayed clearly with minimal noise and artifacts.

The battery also plays an important role in the design, as HP has distributed it throughout the body to maintain weight balance regardless of the orientation of the device. Speaking of weight, the computer weighs just under three kilograms, which is quite light considering its size.

Some other key specs to look out for include the 12th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, 1TB of SSD storage, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support, and a 5MP camera. The 94.3Wh 6-cell battery is said to offer 12 hours of battery life in laptop mode and 11 hours in desktop mode.

As you'd expect from a foldable device, the Specter Fold can be oriented in a variety of ways. The 3-in-1 device can be used as a 12.3-inch laptop with a Bluetooth keyboard located on the top half of the screen. But you can also slide the keyboard down a bit to enable extended view mode. Removing the keyboard will fully activate dual-screen mode unless you buy one with a built-in kickstand. When standing, it switches to desktop mode or can be used as a large tablet.

Moreover, the laptop supports artificial intelligence. It allows you to use various features such as zoom lock, focus activation, automatic screen dimming and more.

The HP Specter Fold will go on sale from October for $5,000. It will be available in limited quantities on HP.com and Best Buy. However, you can now pre-order the device on the company's website.
