Smartphones have become very similar . The rectangle of glass and metal is very similar to the one next to it. The latest innovation is the advent of foldable screens. Samsung was at the forefront and it took a few generations to perfect its designs, but the Galaxy Fold and Flip aren't the only game out there. Google's Pixel Fold is aiming for a high-end version, but like Motorola's Razr+, Oppo's Find N2 Flip is more affordable.

As a cell phone skeptic, I was surprised that I really enjoyed using the Find N2 Flip. She is skinny and sexy. At the same time, it evokes nostalgia for old clamshell phones and feels like the future. Oppo has cut some corners to keep the price down but may be willing to compromise when it comes to foldable phones.

The Oppo Find N2 Flip folds into a square shape measuring around 3.3 x 3 inches. It fits easily in a tight jean pocket or small bag. My black test device has a nice, slightly textured surface that provides more grip. The glossy back features the Oppo logo and the folding mechanism is smooth. At launch, the Oppo Find N2 Flip is a standard 6.8-inch flagship phone in size, similar to the Google Pixel 7 Pro and Xiaomi 13 Ultra.

It's funny to imagine that the external screen is the same as the screens of the first smartphones. At 3.26 inches, it's big for a clamshell phone, but small for anything beyond checking notifications and sending quick replies. However, he has a few tricks up his sleeve. You can use it as a viewfinder for great selfies with the main camera, and swipe through handy customizable widgets that show things like local weather, calendar, and media controls.

Open the Find N2 Flip and you will see an AMOLED display. It has an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, a resolution of 2520 x 1080 pixels and a maximum brightness of 1600 nits. In other words, it's responsive, sharp, and very bright. The screen's matte finish is typical of foldable phones, but the lack of glass makes it easy to read and readable outdoors. The notch is definitely noticeable and you can feel it when you tap and swipe the screen, but it's very subtle.

The best thing about the compact case is that it opens to answer a call and closes to end a call. Folding is good and Oppo expects it to last up to 400,000 times, so no need to split up. It seems well made even though I open it with both hands.

There is no IP rating for water resistance, so it's better to keep it dry. The zipper absorbs scratches from the pocket as well as the edges around the main screen, and scratches are a bigger problem with the matte finish, so you'll need to wipe it down occasionally to keep it clean. It's hard to say how gracefully it will age, which is an issue with foldable phones in general.

The Oppo Find N2 Flip is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus chipset, while the UK version comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It can't compete with Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon chips, but it performed consistently well during my two-week testing period. Navigation was easy, the phone loaded apps and games quickly, and handled long Kingdom Rush sessions well.
