March 31 was an exciting day when a UT LIFESTAR helicopter landed at Knoxville Catholic High School.

Irish Medical Club students can see the equipment up close and personal and get an idea of what it's like for an onboard nurse or ambulance technician.

Club members gather around the helicopter as nurses Brooke Bellman and Sierra Rocasalva explain what services they provide and what life is like at UT Lifester in general.

The Irish Medical Club was founded in December by young Andrew Dreiser. He soon gathered about 60 students interested in medicine.

Dreiser practices what he preaches. Organize a club, invite invited medical speakers, and learn many life support skills such as basic life support, advanced cardiovascular life support, advanced life support in pediatrics, advanced life support aviation. He said he would never overtrain.

The club has come a long way in just a few months. Dreiser offers many opportunities such as job search, meeting and networking with healthcare professionals, facility tours, healthcare projects, clinic rotations and internships.

“Due to the interest and success of the organization, we are partnering with Knoxville Qatar to offer the Academy of Health Sciences Advanced Medical Pathway after school,” said Pam Rhodes, the school's director of marketing.

Prepared for Drum Corps International for Powell High Juniors.

Al Lesser, Buyer News

While Hayley Whitehouse says she has a busy schedule during the school year, it's nothing compared to her summer.

Whitehouse is a student at Powell High School and is serious about his academic career. His grades - "A" and "B" - are a testament to his dedication. Add work to Chick-fil-A and work on Color Guard and Winter Guard and his days will be filled.

However, this summer it will be a total deal.

Whitehouse has been selected for the Music City team that will compete in Drum Corps International from the end of May to the end of August.

"(All summer) it still hasn't affected me," Whitehouse said. "Should be fun."

Music City is one of approximately 40 teams across the country that compete in DCI competition in the US. The season begins with training in Nashville, then zigzags across the country, and finally ends in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts.

early flowering

The White House has been part of the Color Guard (which marches with a band during football season) and the Winter Guard (which marches by itself) since the eighth grade.

“I was an eighth grader on the team,” he recalls. “My grandfather would pick me up (at Powell High School) at 3:30, drive me home to buy what I needed, and then drive me to high school between 4:30 every Tuesday and Thursday.

“It's weird because I don't know anyone. But I love to compete, so I'm used to it. I'm shy, but eventually everyone starts talking to me.

This experience helped him this year. There were two eighth graders in the group. As junior mate, he does his best to make them feel comfortable and welcome.

“I love the feeling of victory that we get from a good performance,” he said.

His brother Skyler, who was the drummer in Powell's band before releasing last year, still helps mix the music they play.

Dear Adventure

In January, Hayley and her parents, Robert and Tracey Bell, traveled to Nashville for a three-day DCI tryout camp. Participants are between 13 and 24 years old.

“Her mom and I were amazed,” Robert said, “we never thought Hailey would live this long. She is so beautiful when she competes. She makes it look so easy."

The results of the competition will be announced immediately. They got an automatic contract they were working on, an invitation to come back for a date or a pat on the back, and I wished them all the best.

The White House made a deal with the car.

“He blew us away,” Robert said of the award. "We didn't expect to be at this level."

The transaction amount is 4600 US dollars and can be paid in installments. This will take care of the expenses for the winter. This is in addition to the $300 trial camp fee.

“Haley isn't very busy,” Robert said. He focuses on everything he does. He will be buried there. This summer will help him understand what he needs to learn.

We invite all lovers of nature, history and cooking to the Dogwood Dinner at the Mabry-Hayzen house.

Carol Z. Shane, Customer News

This Saturday, East Tennessee nature lovers, history buffs, and foodies alike will have a unique opportunity to combine all three passions when Mabry-Hagen House presents Dogwood Dinner.

This is the fifth annual event and more than 80 flowering dogwood trees on the historic site grace Mabry Hill in white, pink and green. The site is a grade 1 arboretum and contains over 30 species of trees, including ancient southern magnolias, oaks, and maples.

Nature lovers, history buffs and foodies will enjoy all three interests this weekend at Dogwood Dinner at Mabry-Hagen House. © at Mabry-Hazen House Nature lovers , history buffs and gourmets will delight all three interests this weekend at the Dogwood Dinner at Mabry-Hazen House.

And on the site there is already a beautiful year-round kitchen. Chief Executive Patrick Hollis is a former chef who began his culinary career as a dishwasher at Oodles Uncorked and rose rapidly in Knoxville's rapidly growing restaurant scene in the early 2010s.

“I have always been interested in history since I was a child and I majored in history at UT while still working at Odle and Sevlis,” Hollis said. But my real heyday as a chef came from Amber Lloyd, former chef at RT Lodge, Bistro by the Tracks, and Sunspot, who hired me in 2013 as chef for the Chi Omega fraternity.

Patrick Hollis, public historian and executive director of Mabry-Hazen House, is also a talented chef. “My specialty is historical cuisine,” he said. © Patrick Hollis, Public Historian and Chief Executive of Mabry-Hazen House , dedicated and talented chef at Mabry-Hazen House. “My specialty is historical cuisine,” he said.

“I took a year off to attend graduate school in public history and my experience with Amber took my culinary knowledge and experience to the next level.

"In fact, even today I work as a private chef for the fraternity once a week."

Hollis built her student career at James Madison University, combining her passion for history and culinary arts with her understanding of food, the South, and taste while studying public history.

In 2016, he returned to Knoxville with an interest in history. Looking for a way to pay his bills, he returned to the Lonesome Dove, the fraternity, and the Bridgewater Place kitchen. She also began volunteering at the Mabry-Hayzen home. A year later he was elected director.

“My specialty is historical cuisine,” Hollis said. “I want to research recipes for a certain period; what ingredients were available and what products were popular?

"I'm more into Southern cuisine, but it's more of a time than a place, so I'd say it's 1850-1920."

Hollis also edited The Tennessee and Virginia Cookbook, which was reprinted in 1911.

In June, he'll be hosting a historic dinner with Nourish Knoxville, but this weekend's multi-course lunch focuses on regional flavors rather than historic options. These include pimiento cheese canapés and sweet potato ham cookies, fennel carrot soup, smoked pork and spring greens. Jordan Smith of Small Comforts Kitchen offers one of his delectable desserts: the strawberry biscuit. Whole foods gluten free.

Dogwood Dinner will take place on Saturday, April 15 at 6:30 pm at the Mabry-Hazen House, 1711 Dandridge Avenue. Tickets can be found at mabryhazen.com/events/dogwooddinner-2023.

Bearden High Stage 'The Crucible' show for hard times

John Shearer, News for Buyers

After covering A Midsummer Night's Dream and Metamorphosis in the previous two years, the Burden High School theater class is presenting a more serious production of Crucible April 14-16.

Beard educator and theater director Cathy Alley felt it was the right time, for several reasons, to present Arthur Miller's 1953 Tony Award-winning play for Arthur Miller's somewhat fictional account of the 1692-1693 witch trials in Salem, State Massachusetts.

Serenity Wright (front left) and Annabella Brady (back left), Luke Bouchard, Jack Stapleton, Holt Macleberry, Izzy Fenech and Lindy McCool.

"It's one of the great American comedies and I've never directed it," Ellie said. "I had the right lineup and I thought it would be a good change for the students."

He added that it is a more dramatic drama than what was presented in the previous two years and is based on realism. In religious circles, the melting pot is defined as a difficult time to test one's courage, and the show focuses on those who are accused of witchcraft in puritanical society.

Historical evidence suggests that Miller wrote the play as a subtle strike at the McCarthyism of the 1950s, when some Americans were accused of being communists. But Ellie believes the show is still relevant today, as both liberals and conservatives regularly make compromising comments about the opposition.

“Both sides are always trying to get themselves into trouble with someone important. “That kind of hysteria is even more common now.”

He added that the show explores the human condition and is a cautionary tale about how to succumb to irrational fear and crowd mentality.

“The point of the show is that it encourages us to be vigilant against abuses of power and to hold the people in power accountable,” he said.

Ellie said the students practiced several evenings and at other times outside of normal school hours to prepare for the final days. He said he was pleased with the rehearsals and that he had talented students, some of whom were planning to pursue theater after graduation.

“I have great students, they work hard, they are very dedicated and they study very well,” she said.

The cast and crew will present the show at the school on April 13, followed by public performances Friday and Saturday at 7:00 pm and Sunday at 2:30 pm. A reserved seat is $15 and a regular seat is $12. For ticket information, please visit beardentheatre.com or contact the school.
