Xiaomi Mix Fold 2: Unfolding A Powertool
Folding devices are not the most useful products. They bend, break, and have many moving parts that make them vulnerable to outside forces. But this problem comes with juicy compromises: screen real estate. As we slowly move towards larger screens, the only logical approach is to bend the screen without affecting the form factor. Big names in the smartphone industry are now trying to embrace the foldable philosophy and improve the user experience with each iteration. The result of this approach is the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2. We've been able to play with the device for a while and here's our opinion.
The phone's selfie camera comes with a 20MP 27mm lens. It enables a wide range of features like optical zoom, night mode and portrait mode for high quality photos and videos. To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of the device's selfie camera and you don't need it; Most of the time they stick to the rear camera.
In terms of performance, Mix Fold 2 is powered by Qualcomm SM8475 Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (4nm). It is the industry leading processor currently available in the market. It also comes with 12GB of high-speed RAM. Our review unit had 1TB of internal storage. On paper, this makes it a great choice for gaming, video editing, and many other tasks. The device also has a 4500mAh capacity, above average battery life if you're only on YouTube. But it can be recharged quickly with a 67W fast charger (included in the box).
The star of the show is, as expected, the foldable 8.02-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1914 x 2160 pixels, which creates an immersive viewing experience. The foldable design allows for a more compact form factor when the device is closed, making it more compact than competing phones. All other improvements, viz. HDR10+, Dolby Vision, 120Hz refresh rate and more. Also available. The flip-up screen comes in a 21:9 aspect ratio that does most of the work without opening the lid. The screen is good enough for texting, email and other non-media activities.
One of the most obvious things about the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 is that it does not run on the Android operating system. Instead, it runs on MIUI 12, Xiaomi's custom operating system. This can be a hindrance for users used to the Android interface and perhaps more comfortable with the learning curve of the new operating system. However, we had trouble navigating using the review unit's keyboard, as it lacks the popular English keyboard. Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 is not officially available in Bangladesh. Nevertheless, it came at a steep price.
In conclusion, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 2 is a powerful and feature-rich device that offers an excellent camera and high performance. The slim foldable design is a nice touch and definitely makes the device more manageable. But the lack of Android compatibility is a big problem, which can be a stumbling block for some users. Overall, this is a good option for Xiaomi fans or those looking for an affordable foldable device, but there may be better options for others.
