Samsungs New Prototype Smartphone Screen Rotates 360 Degrees, Report Says
Samsung has introduced a new smartphone screen with a 360-degree rotating screen that can be folded both inward and outward.
The Verge reports that the technology company's subsidiary Samsung Display presented new display and hinge prototypes at CES 2023.
According to the company, the "tilt and tilt" screen can be folded in and out through a full 360-degree range, and it also has a different hinge that creates less visible creases when the screen is folded.
This new "waterdrop" hinge design looks different from the one used on the Samsung Galaxy Fold models that will be available from August 2022.
The new hinge is said to not only leave less visible creases, but also help reduce stress on the foldable screen, which could help the devices' long-term reliability.
Samsung could be bringing new displays to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5, as a report from Korean site Naver earlier this week suggested that the new device could see a possible design change.
The Fold is a full-sized smartphone that opens horizontally like a book onto a large tablet-sized screen.
While the design of a foldable phone is an impressive feat of engineering, reviews of Samsung's lineup highlight some of the challenges these models face.
Currently, not all software developers create apps with interfaces scaled to the resolution of these phones, although Samsung's apps work well on them, as do Discord, Outlook, and Microsoft's Office suite.
The company said last year that it would continue to "listen and learn" from its users and that it would use more foldable smartphones.
Samsung further said that these devices remain in the ultra-premium smartphone category and will be widely adopted by a wider audience in the coming years.
The next line of foldable devices is expected in August this year, but it's unclear how the phone's software dynamics will work when the phone is folded.
