Xiaomi 13 Series: Everything You Need To Know
Xiaomi has launched its 13th smartphone series in China and that means the global version is coming for us all over the world.
This version has a lot of good stuff, a new design, Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon chipset and many improvements in the camera system.
A third device, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, is rumored later in this article.
Here's everything you need to know about the Xiaomi 13 series, including specs, price and when you can get it.
Xiaomi 13 release date and price
- It was released in China on December 11, 2022
- A global launch is expected in Q1 2023, possibly at MWC
Xiaomi held a launch event for the Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro and the MIUI 14 platform in China on December 11, 2022. The phones will go on sale in China from December 14, 2022
There's no official word on international availability yet, but over the past few years, we've seen the variant launch globally in March. So we can expect the same in 2023.
Xiaomi has confirmed its presence at MWC 2023, which will be held from February 27 to March 2, so we can expect an announcement if not a presentation at the event.
While the international price is yet to be determined, we do know how much the phone will cost in China, which may help us calculate this year's price.
- Xiaomi 13: From ¥3,999 (around $575 / £465 / €540)
- Xiaomi 13 Pro: from ¥4,999 (approx. $715 / £585 / €680)
However, the international prices in 2022 are very different, so we can assume that the device will be very close to the international prices of the 12 series.
In Europe, the Xiaomi 12 has an MSRP of €899, while the Xiaomi 12 Pro has an MSRP of €1,099.
Xiaomi 13
- Flat screen and back panel
- Degree of protection IP68
- Colors: White, Black, Grey, Light Green and Light Blue (plus limited edition options)
The standard Xiaomi 13 has an iPhone-inspired design with a flat screen and a back surrounded by flat metal edges.
Available in five standard colors, white, black, grey, light green and light blue. However, the limited edition is also available in bright green, red, yellow and blue.
All models have a glass back panel, except for the light blue version, which is covered in vegan leather. The phone has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
The rear cameras are placed in a square panel of black glass with rounded edges, in the standard upper left position. The Matrix bears the prominent Leica branding, indicating that we can expect some serious photography from this device.
xiaomi 13 pro
- Curved screen and back panel
- Degree of protection IP68
- Color: white, black, light green and light blue
The Xiaomi 13 Pro looks very different from its cheaper sibling, ditching the flat screen in favor of a curved screen and body. Its exterior is very similar to Xiaomi's previous flagship phones.
The Pro version is available in white, black, light green and light blue, while the light blue model is again covered in vegan leather. But this model has a ceramic back instead of glass like everything else. No flashy limited edition colors either.
The camera array is aesthetically similar, but physically larger and more prominently convex. 13 Pro is IP68 certified.
Xiaomi 13
- 6.36 inch 120Hz OLED
- Resolution: 1080×2400
- Maximum brightness: 1900 nits
A notable feature of the Xiaomi 13 display is its amazing brightness of up to 1900 nits. This means you can race comfortably on a clear day and see every detail even in the toughest conditions.
Otherwise, it has a wide FHD+ resolution and a fast 120Hz refresh rate. We also know that MIUI allows for a lot of customization, including color rendering, so it's easy to tweak everything to your liking.
xiaomi 13 pro
- 6.73 inch LTPO 120Hz OLED
- Resolution: 1440×3200
- Maximum brightness: 1900 nits
Xiaomi 13 Pro ups the resolution to WQHD+ and uses an LTPO panel. In fact, if you're not familiar, LTPO technology allows for dynamically changing refresh rates without the need for additional drivers, allowing for more efficient battery use even when the resolution is high.
The display is also slightly larger on the Pro model, but still offers the same brightness performance that we consider the brightest on the market at the time of writing.
Xiaomi 13
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
- 8/12 GB RAM + 128/256/512 GB storage
- 4500mAh battery + 67W wired charging
- 50W wireless charging
The Xiaomi 13 is powered by Qualcomm's latest and greatest mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It can be paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 memory and up to 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage.
We've tested phones like the iQOO 11 and RedMagic 8 Pro, and we know that these are very powerful processors, so the Xiaomi 13 should be powerful enough for gaming and very responsive for everyday tasks.
In 2023, we are happy to see that this model also has 50W wireless charging, not only is wireless charging rare, but also 50W speed.
xiaomi 13 pro
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
- 8/12 GB RAM + 128/256/512 GB storage
- 4820mAh battery + 120W charger
- 50W wireless charging
The main features remain the same as the Xiaomi 13 Pro. However, we do get a bigger battery, but also faster 120W wired charging.
This means you'll be up and running again in no time when the battery life starts to die.
Xiaomi 13
- Primary: 50MP, f/1.8 with OIS
- Tele: 10 MP, f/2.0, 3x with OIS
- Wide angle: 12 MP, f/2.2
- Selfie: 32MP, f/2.0
The Xiaomi 13's camera setup seems to be largely inherited from the Xiaomi 12. The exception is the telephoto camera, which makes up the 12's weak 5-megapixel macro camera.
Still, the 50-megapixel primary camera is the star of the show, with a wide f/1.9 aperture, optical image stabilization, and phase-detection autofocus. The selfie camera also looks impressive with a generous 32MP resolution.
xiaomi 13 pro
- Primary: 50 MP with OIS, f/1.9 (Sony IMX989 – 1-inch sensor)
- Tele: 50 MP, f/2.0, 3x with OIS
- Wide angle: 50 MP, f/2.2
- Selfie: 32MP, f/2.0
At first glance, the main camera of the Xiaomi 13 Pro may not seem to have changed much, but the truth is that it is a completely different beast. Despite the same 50-megapixel resolution, it packs a larger sensor, one of the few 1-inch sensors to hit the smartphone.
This is the same sensor we saw in the Xiaomi 12S Ultra in 2022 and will also be featured in the upcoming Vivo X90 Pro+. So we know it can deliver great results, and Xiaomi's collaboration with Leica will only strengthen that achievement.
An additional camera increases the resolution on this model, allowing all three to take 50-megapixel photos. The selfie camera is still the same 32MP unit as the standard Xiaomi 13.
What do we know about the Xiaomi 13 Ultra?
There are a lot of rumors about the potential of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, but hard information is somewhat scarce at this point.
Usually, the Ultra variants are released sometime after the flagship phones, so we might have to wait a bit. There is also a chance that Xiaomi will skip the 13 Ultra and go straight to the Xiaomi 13S Ultra.
This would be in line with what the company did in 2022 to release the 12 Ultra earlier in the year and release the 12S Ultra in the summer.
Little is known about the hardware anyway - the 12S Ultra's main feature is its 1-inch sensor - but now that it's coming on the 13 Pro, the phone needs to find new ways to differentiate itself.
Leaks from the digital chat stations suggest that they will have a quad rear camera setup and add gimbal stabilization to the 1-inch Sony IMX989. Whether this is true remains to be seen.
