Is Chuck Schumer Going To Let Big Tech Quash Popular Antitrust Reform?
Big Tech has spent tens of millions lobbying the grassroots to stop bipartisan antitrust reforms, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer appears to be complying, despite efforts to impeach Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
US Online Innovation and Opportunity Act powered by The Senses. Amy Klobuchar (D) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) passed the Senate Judiciary Committee 16-6; The Open App Marketplace Act, sponsored by Sens. Marcia Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), 20-2. All of them also left the committee of the House of Representatives.
The first law would prevent big platforms like Google, Amazon and Facebook from promoting their products among competitors. the other prohibits Google and Apple from forcing developers to use their app stores (with a 30% "tax") to sell to consumers.
According to polls, about three-quarters of Americans approve of both; We already helped them in June 2021.
Schumer has promised for months to bring the bill up for a vote, though he says it's a "high priority." . . but so far they have not come to that, even though Biden says he also supports the White House.
That prompted Grassley and others to include a bill to bundle the two measures this week in preparation for a New Year's vote to fund the government, even asking President Joe Biden to intervene.
"The White House has unequivocally endorsed this legislation, and Senator Schumer is committed to implementing it," Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) told Fox News last week. "It's time to vote for this landmark bipartisan legislation and do something for small businesses, consumers and innovators."
"Allowing big tech companies to dominate policy decisions in Washington is no longer an option," Klobuchar warned.
Host Nancy Pelosi may be a real fraud. their ally, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), strongly opposed the measures. (Coincidentally, Lofgren's daughter works in Google's legal department while the Pelosi's were cashing in on Big Tech stocks.)
Schumer, on the other hand, has family ties to big tech; one of his daughters works at Facebook and the other as a lobbyist at Google.
But earlier this year, Schumer promised to vote last summer. Then in August , Schumer spokesman Angelo Raffaro told the Post: "Senator Schumer is working with Senator Klobuchar and other supporters to get the necessary votes and plans to do so.
Again, the committee vote shows strong bipartisan support for both bills. He says the White House is also involved. So if you put them on the omnibus it will make the transition easier . And if the House and Senate don't act this month, it's over again.
Opponents of these sweeping reforms will by no means have the votes to topple the government on this issue. Hidden romance at work here. Is it enough to make Schumer break her word again ?
