Check Out Contrary NYC, A 'Soho House For Techies' Community Hangout That's Generating Buzz And Drawing Visitors Like Serena Williams
  • Silicon Valley-based design firm Contrari recently opened a community for tech workers in New York.
  • The goal is to create a common platform where people can connect with like-minded professionals.
  • Take a closer look at the room.

New York has always had a lot of special places. Famous - or famous, depending on your point of view - Soho House, a members-only club for "creative people" is a club with showrooms and event spaces.

There's also Zero Bond, frequented by more thoughtful actors like Elon Musk, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and Kim Kardashian.

In September, Silicon Valley venture capital firm Contrari added another position to the list.

Unlike New York, it calls itself "the home of Soho's tech geeks." It is a members-only club where entrepreneurs, programmers and people from the wider world of technology gather.

But unlike many of the city's other quirky hangouts, there's no pool, hot tub, or cocktail lounge. On the contrary, the opposite is a large and open-minded workplace.

Since its opening, Contrari has delivered comedy shows, performers, and shows. She has previously painted famous characters like Serena Williams.

Recreate encounters and "casual relationships" with people in elementary school or college, says Benjamin Lover, president of the national program.

"You leave college and live a pretty decent life, being limited by your peers or roommates and the people you meet," Laufer says.

Instead to strengthen long-term relationships.

Until recently, the positions were mostly available to people associated with the company - investors, founders, and colleagues. They are now opening the app to a wider community.

Contrari founder and managing partner Eric Tarczynski said they were looking for people who were "ambitious, entrepreneurial and kind." These three qualities result in an acceptance rate of 5% to 8%, he said.

"I think somebody, put 500 people into a Slack group, they call it a community, right?" - said Tarchinsky. "For us, I think community is a living, breathing entity where people have a sense of home and purpose and tribe."

In the second week of October, the New York Tech Week weekend, I visited Contrari, a five-day event dedicated to the city's burgeoning startup ecosystem. Manhattan is teeming with venture capitalists hoping to fund new deals and startup founders.

Seems like a good time to take a look at the workplace. Here's a closer look at what I found.
