SWFL Students Compete For Scholarship At Super Smash Bros Tournament
Fort Myers
Southwest Florida students have the opportunity to compete for scholarships worth thousands of dollars by playing Super Smash Bros. As part of Tech Fest 2022 at Dunbar High School.
Full Sail University hosted the event where pre-signed students competed for up to $15,000 in full sail scholarships. Dunbar High School students dance around their classmates and cheer them on at the gym.
They gathered a crowd to see them for the first time, right? said Andrew Duncan of Full Cell University. "Let's see that their peers take them seriously."
The head of the program at Dunbar High says this is a great opportunity for them.
"They may not be super-athletes, but they are tech stars," Spence said. "To be able to bring something like that and have them compete at the championship level is really cool."
Leonardo Garcia reached the final of the Tech Fest competition.
"I haven't played Smash Bros. in a long time, so... I haven't had any training," Garcia said. "It was really lucky for me."
These kids can earn a lot of money by playing video games at home.
"It's going to be exhausting," Garcia said. “I need to start playing Smash Bros. prepare, but I think I will be ready.”
Duncan says the readiness leads to long-term success in areas other than video games.
“Mathematics education and STEM classes are one thing, but we wanted to help them connect and connect the dots,” Duncan said. So, 'Hey,' if you focus on those courses, and if you're good at them, that's the kind of career you can go into. "
The Tech Fest winners aren't out yet. Garcia and other contestants will compete for bags at Full Sail's Esports Invitational.
