'Matter' Smart Home Interoperability Rollout Continues With Samsung, Google
Samsung and Google are taking smart home interoperability to a new level with the new Matter 1.0 connectivity standard.
Galaxy phone and tablet users will be able to integrate Matter-compatible devices into the SmartThings and Google Home ecosystems.
Matter, released by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) earlier this month, enables web-connected devices from multiple manufacturers to work together securely.
Unless your smart home comes with one brand and only one brand (Amazon, Apple, Google, etc.), connecting devices and accounts is a multi-step problem that doesn't always work. Enter Matter, which promises to help manufacturers more easily build compatible devices across multiple platforms, regardless of manufacturer.
"With the release of Matter, we recognize that there will be new hope when it comes to smart home connectivity," Matthew McCullough, Google's vice president of product management for Android developers, said in a statement. "We are proud to partner with Samsung Electronics to offer new and existing smart home users the first glimpse of what the future of the smart home will look like and the ease of use that comes with it."

With the adoption of Matter 1.0 in the coming weeks, Google and Samsung will make it easier for people to find, connect, and control their devices via the SmartThings app or Google Home on Android. In the future, users may choose to integrate their Google Home devices with the SmartThings app or vice versa. You no longer have to manually add each device individually or try to remember which ecosystem to use to set things up the first time.
"Giving users greater flexibility with this new multi-administrator is a natural evolution of ours," said Jeon Jung, corporate vice president and head of SmartThings at Samsung Electronics. “SmartThings and Google are committed to user choice and empowering consumers to take control of their devices. This partnership reinforces that commitment by improving the user experience and promoting transparency across the ecosystem.”
