Xiaomi 13 Pro Review: Competing With The Best

Xiaomi 13 Pro Review: Competing With The Best

Every year before MWC, we get announcements about Chinese smartphone brands such as Oppo, Honor and Xiaomi. This year was no different. For example, Honor introduced the Honor Vs foldable model and the Honor Magic5 Pro foldable model. However, Xiaomi is not the only one to fall behind and for this it has introduced the 13 series led by the Xiaomi 13 Pro.

There is one thing that sets the Xiaomi 13 Pro apart from most previous generation phones: the Xiaomi 13 Pro will be available outside of China. That doesn't mean it's coming to the US - it won't - but it does mean there will be a version compatible with Google Play in many countries around the world.

But that also means the Xiaomi 13 Pro has to compete on a much larger scale. Sure, competitors like Apple and Samsung are available in China, but local brands like Xiaomi, Huawei, and Honor tend to do a lot better than overseas. How well does Xiaomi 13 Pro compete? It turns out there are a lot of them.

Features of Xiaomi 13 Pro

Xiaomi 13 Pro Design

Xiaomi 13 Pro aims to stand out with the overall appearance of the camera module, which is common these days. The phone has a typical plate shape with a fairly well-spaced square camera module on the back. It has a metal body with glass front and back panels and an IP68 rating against water and dust.

On the front of the device is a large 6.73-inch screen with a hole for the front camera in the middle of this screen. The clipping is not noticeable and is easily ignored.

On the bottom of the phone, you'll find a USB-C port, while on the right, you'll find the power button and volume rocker. Everything is basically where you would expect it to be.

In general, the phone is quite high. It's solid enough to feel sturdy without being overly heavy, and the curves feel nice to the touch. The overall design is good, but not necessarily the most interesting. However, it's not ugly at all and most people will like the overall look. My only major complaint is probably that it's a bit slippery, but anyone using a case will have no problem with that.

Screen Xiaomi 13 Pro

As mentioned, the Xiaomi 13 Pro features a 6.73-inch 1440p AMOLED display with a 120Hz variable refresh rate. This is one of the best programs and it really shows.

Unlike some competitors (look at you Samsung), Xiaomi 13 Pro supports Dolby Vision. This is in addition to HDR10+ support.

It also looks nice and bright. The phone supports a maximum brightness of 1900 nits, which is even higher than the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Even outdoors, the Xiaomi 13 Pro is capable of delivering an overall consistently excellent viewing experience.

Xiaomi 13 Pro battery and charger

The phone is powered by a 4820mAh battery and I found that I could get through a full day of heavy use with about 30-40% battery left by the end of the day. It wasn't as impressive as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it still delivered all-day battery life with ease, and most heavy users should have a similar experience.

Unlike the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the Xiaomi 13 Pro also supports ultra-fast charging. It charges at 120W, though you'll need to use the included charger to reach those speeds. The device also supports 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging, which means you can use the device to charge Qi-powered headphones or laptops.

This is a great set of batteries and chargers, and it's hard to find fault with them. Not only does the phone charge the fastest; that title belongs to the new Realme GT 3. But you can't complain when you have the charging speed, which should charge your phone in about 20 minutes.

Speakers Xiaomi 13 Pro

The speakers on this phone are great too. The phone has stereo speakers, a top speaker below the display, and a bottom speaker. This is the lowest of the Xiaomi 12 Pro's four speakers, but the sound is still pretty good. You won't get the best bass, but in most situations the sound is very loud.

The sound is not as good as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is the main competitor of the device. The Galaxy S23 Ultra offers more depth and detail.

Performance Xiaomi 13 Pro

Under the hood of Xiaomi 13 Pro is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, which is Qualcomm's latest and greatest processor. It is paired with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

Xiaomi 13 Pro is very good in terms of performance. It handles things like heavy multitasking and mobile gaming with ease, and as a highly capable Android phone, even power users won't have a problem.

Test results confirm excellent day-to-day performance. Here are the test results we received.

These results are excellent and prove that Xiaomi 13 Pro is a high-end device in 2023. We're expecting very good results from a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 device, but it's still nice to see a phone that can compete. With the Galaxy S23 Ultra, it's simple.

Camera Xiaomi 13 Pro

The camera is one of the main events here, as it should be. The Xiaomi 13 Pro has a triple camera on the back which includes a 50.3MP main camera with OIS, a 50MP telephoto lens with 3.2x optical zoom, and an ultra 50MP camera.

This is a substantial trio of cameras and it's usually hard to complain about it. But in this price range, the Xiaomi 13 Pro goes up against the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which adds a periscope telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom. This makes the Samsung device a bit more versatile.

However, Xiaomi's partnership with Leica is starting to shine. The main 1-inch sensor is particularly impressive, displaying vibrant colors and impressive detail. When you open the camera, you can also choose from several different styles, which is nice.

In well-lit conditions, the 13 Pro is capable of producing detailed images with excellent color reproduction. Images are pretty consistent across the lens, and while you won't get a great image at 70x max, you'll get a decent image up to about 20x.

Even in low light, the camera is able to take reasonably sharp photos. Like any camera, they won't be as impressive in good light, but Xiaomi shows that it can compete with any competitor in this regard.

Xiaomi has also introduced some interesting AI camera features. For example, the Google Magic Eraser scam works very well.

Overall, the camera is one of the best things about the Xiaomi 13 Pro and it's a good reason to buy a phone.

Software Xiaomi 13 Pro

Xiaomi 13 Pro software is also quite good. Some people really like the Samsung interface, but I prefer the more classic Android interface, closer to what is on the Pixel. Xiaomi 13 Pro is a bit in the middle. It's far from standard, but it also doesn't go as far as Samsung when it comes to software customization in general.

However, there isn't much to like about the software either. Based on Android 14, MIUI 14 can be a little confusing and a little overwhelming. As someone who uses iOS a bit, I appreciate the inclusion of a quick setting shader, but if you're new to the MIUI interface, it might take a while to get used to. I don't like square icons either.

Overall, while MIUI isn't my favorite on Android, most people get used to it fairly quickly.

consequences

Xiaomi 13 Pro is a serious phone. The device offers an excellent camera, high performance and more. The device is excellent. The software is good, but the hardware is a bit of a distraction from the software experience. I hope that Xiaomi improves MIUI in the next few years.

Competition

The device's biggest competitor is the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is arguably a little better. It has a slightly more versatile camera and more consistent software (although that software is more Samsung-focused).

There's also the Pixel 7 Pro, which is priced much more aggressively. It certainly offers the best value for money, but you won't get the same level of performance. However, out of the three, I think the Pixel 7 Pro is the better choice.

Should you buy Xiaomi 13 Pro?

Yes, this is a unique phone that has a lot to offer.
