Sam Altman To Return As CEO Of OpenAI

Sam Altman To Return As CEO Of OpenAI

Sam Altman is expected to return as CEO of OpenAI after developer ChatGPT said it has reached "an agreement in principle" to rehire him.

The San Francisco-based company made the announcement after days of internal turmoil following Altman's surprise firing on Friday. Nearly all of OpenAI's 750-person workforce threatened to quit unless the company's board of directors brought them back in, and then immediately left the company.

As part of the agreement reached yesterday, the deal includes the creation of a new board chaired by Brett Taylor, former co-CEO of software company Salesforce. It included former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Adam D'Angelo, a tech entrepreneur and current board member who played a role in Altman's resignation.

OpenAI previously tweeted about the platform we are working together on details. Thank you for your patience."

Altman, who never regained his seat on the board, wrote "I look forward to returning to OpenAI."

The 38-year-old was fired on Friday by the board of nonprofit parent company OpenAI, which oversees its for-profit subsidiary. His return was reportedly conditional on the dismissal of the board and a review of OpenAI's governance. Under the deal, D'Angelo will stay on, but three other board members will be replaced.

Microsoft, OpenAI's largest investor, pushed for Altman's reinstatement. On Monday, the company hired Altman and Greg Brockman, who left his position as president of OpenAI after his colleague was fired on Friday. Analysts interpreted the move as the former CEO taking a de facto leadership role over his former employer. Brockman confirmed at X that he would be returning to OpenAI, posting "so we're back" in a selfie with colleagues.

“Sam, Greg and I spoke and agreed that they, along with the OAI [OpenAI] leadership team, play an important role in ensuring that OAI continues to thrive and achieve its goals. We look forward to further expanding our strong partnership and bringing the benefits of next-generation AI to our customers and partners.”

On Monday, OpenAI confirmed to employees that it was "in intensive discussions" about Altman's return. "We continue to explore mutually acceptable options and plan to talk again tomorrow morning after everyone gets some sleep," Anna Makanju, vice president of global affairs, wrote in a note obtained by Bloomberg News.

Altman's return will make him OpenAI's fourth CEO in five days. He was initially replaced as interim CEO by the company's chief technology officer Meera Murati, ahead of Emmett Shear, co-founder of video game streaming platform Twitch, as the interim successor. OpenAI is reportedly conducting an independent investigation into Altman's firing and its aftermath

Last week, the board announced that it had fired Altman for "distorted communications," but declined to elaborate on which communications it was referring to. Share denied that Altman's firing was related to security concerns, while experts more broadly expressed concern that the development of artificial intelligence is moving too fast.

Following the news of Altman's return, Shear told the channel Wednesday "I'm glad I was part of the solution."

Three people have left the board: OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who signed a letter to employees calling for Altman's return; Tasha McCauley, technology entrepreneur; and Helen Toner, director of the Center for Security and Emerging Technologies at Georgetown University.

On Wednesday, Toner released a statement to OpenAI about Altman's reinstatement, adding: "Now we can all get some sleep."
