King Iso Digs Deep

Tarel Gulledge is stuck in a cycle of relapse. He went from being homeless to a mental hospital and finally to prison.

He was in jail the last time he was released from prison for petty crimes like stealing food and sleeping in his car. At the crossroads, he had a moment when he thought it would be easier to return to his 11 p.m. detention. But he decided to go the other way, put everything into music, and King Ison was born.

As a sign of his isolation, Gualede adopted the stage name King Iso, pronounced "Iso", and considered the letters to be an acronym meaning "I Conquer". He made a name for himself in Omaha releasing mixtapes and EPs before eventually signing with Strange Music on the TechN9ne label.

King Esson has a fast flow like Tech himself. Although his songs and lyrics were always personal, he was so scared at the beginning of the tour that he performed the song "Don't Let Go". basis of awareness about one's own problems. But when he did, the response was overwhelming.

"My response changed my energy and what I wanted to do with music," says King Esson. "I've always wanted to talk about it, and putting it on record was therapeutic."

After the concerts, fans approached him, told him their problems and thanked him for sharing their problems with us. In 2018, a young woman suddenly came to a concert. After the show, he hugs her and explains that he planned to kill himself the next day, but he showed up at the concert for a reason and announced that he wouldn't make it to the end.

King Esso said: “I bet more than a million dollars every day. "I'd take that over Lamborghini and the invention of diamonds any day."

King Iso said times like this show the importance of talking about mental health and creating a safe space where people know they are not alone. He says talking about mental health in rap songs affects another group, especially the black community, which he doesn't often talk about.

"It's like trying to deliver medicine in CD form to a zombie-infested country," King Esso said.

Children

True to his word, King Esso's new album iLLdren goes where most rap records haven't. Like a song

"Your Way" talks about her struggles with mental health and neurodivergence and tells listeners that they are fine just the way they are.

In ILLdren, the title tells the story of King Eason's life, from his early struggles to current challenges such as decency and raising children. Aiso addresses black fatherhood in the song "My Children," where he says it's important to break the cycle of abuse and be there for the children, saying, “We need to be present and not just buy gifts. »
