Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic Review: Giving The People What They Want, Mostly

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic Review: Giving The People What They Want, Mostly

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic brings back the fan-favorite rotating bezel with the updated Wear OS 4 operating system. With improved internals, a useful temperature sensor, and a few other tweaks, the Watch 6 Classic might be more secure, but it still leads Samsung as the best smartwatch option for Android users.

Just in time, Samsung has introduced a new flagship line of smartwatches with several updates and improved Wear OS. As in the past two years, the 2023 lineup includes a sporty model and a more expensive high-end offering. However, unlike the Galaxy Watch 5 family, the most expensive smartwatch in the Galaxy Watch 6 series once again features the classic Samsung name. Learn more about the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic in this review.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic review.

What it is

at a glance

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is the high-end model of the brand's 6 series. It looks similar to the base model of the Galaxy Watch 6, but brings back the famous rotating bezel last seen on the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. In this way, the device technically follows the Galaxy Watch 5, but appears to be the successor to the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.
  • The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic starts at $399 for the 43mm model. The larger 47mm model costs $429. Any LTE model of any size costs about $50 more.
  • Where to buy? The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is now available for pre-order from Samsung. The device was officially launched on August 11th.
  • How do we test it? I tested the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic for seven days. The review section is provided by Samsung.
  • Is it worth it? The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is a stunning smartwatch featuring the latest Wear OS 4 operating system and fan-favorite design features. The user experience is simple, robust, and reliable. The price isn't cheap either, and once older models get the Wear OS 4 update, they'll look too similar to the Galaxy Watch 5 or Galaxy Watch 5 Pro to pay full price for the latest range. .

What I like best about the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic

As with each of the latest generations of Galaxy Watches, there's a lot to like about the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 series, and the Classic model in particular. The design is elegant, classic and timeless as the company listened to user feedback and developed a rotating bezel. The bezel influence comes immediately from the MIA Galaxy Watch 4 series, which gives the Samsung smartwatch a traditionally modern rather than sporty aesthetic, and I couldn't be happier with the intuitive navigation. Here are the details, Samsung. This feature also minimizes interaction with the screen, which means less fiddling and more annoying tapping.

The return of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic bezel means a return to traditional aesthetics and simple, seamless navigation.

In addition to using the bezel, I tested the touch screen regularly. It was generally responsive despite not wearing it when I'm wearing sweat or sunscreen (which is every day for me). The display is protected by a sapphire crystal and a raised bezel, and after a week my watch still looks like new.

Both the 43mm and 47mm Galaxy Watch 6 Classic offer simple AMOLED displays, each slightly larger than their Galaxy Watch 4 Classic counterpart. The 1.3-inch display is easy on the eyes, with a 60Hz refresh rate and 2,000 nits of peak brightness (compared to 1,000 nits on the Galaxy Watch 5). The new cases have slightly reduced bezels to provide more screen real estate. The cases themselves are slightly wider, but not incredibly large, although you may want to consider a protective case to avoid scratches and damage.

Samsung's new quick-release button makes it easier than ever to change bands.

The Galaxy Watch 6 I tested shipped with a luxurious white hybrid faux leather band that felt comfortable and looked great on my wrist. Personally, I don't like long-lasting leather bands because they're hard to clean (white is a bold choice in this regard) and can sometimes sweat. Samsung's straps were interchangeable, but they weren't entirely comfortable, especially for those who didn't have long fingernails. This time around, Samsung has made it easier than ever to swap 6 classic Galaxy Watch bands for the latest bands with a quick release button. This button might be one of my favorite updates. Mixing up my look was a game changer for me instead of wearing a sports suit for the future.

Flipping the device over, you'll notice a familiar sensor stack from the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, as on-watch health monitoring remains the same as the previous generation. Bioactive sensors are still available, including ECG functionality and blood oxygen monitoring, as well as a skin temperature sensor. In fact, if you already own the previous year's model, it doesn't warrant an upgrade. However, this is the first classic model with a temperature sensor. If both frame rate and comfortable sleep stats are priorities, the 6 Classic is in the game. This sensor specifically distinguishes the device from the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. You can track everything from overnight body temperature stats to room temperature. The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic also offers current forecasts and detailed periodic monitoring, which are not available on the 4 Classic.

This device is the first Galaxy Watch with a temperature sensor and rotating bezel.

With sleep tracking, Samsung has joined the ranks of companies whose consumers, as a society, are getting worse at rest. The biggest difference you'll find in the new series is the presentation of sleep data (not a jump in data quality). The Galaxy Watch 5 already delivered a lot of data overnight, and the 6 Classic was on par in terms of accuracy. I also enjoyed Sleeping Animals last year. But now, Samsung offers advanced sleep coaching as well as snoring, sleep stages and daytime sleep scores. This feature requires more information than I have so far, but I'll update this review as I come across additional gear. However, I would appreciate any tool that helps improve my sleep habits.

Rather, it's free time. The watch continues to track more than 90 sport modes and adds more detailed running metrics. Everything from tempo to cadence to asymmetry should engage users with stat tweaks to their liking. Samsung has added the ability to create custom workouts. It's still not a Garmin watch, but it certainly offers a solid experience for the average athlete. I'm especially happy to see custom heart rate bands because nothing gets me going faster than color coordination. Heart rate trackers have become increasingly available in wearables and are a useful way for users to create effective and efficient exercise programs.

Meanwhile, if you forget to start a workout, Galaxy Watch 6 automatically detects classic walking and running, as well as cycling, elliptical, rowing and swimming. This usually marks the five minute mark. The device also gets dynamic workouts, but I don't think it's dynamic enough. My device has never been locked during this review period. I really appreciate the automatic exercise detection and the Samsung is consistently reliable, as I regularly drive many miles to show anyone who doesn't have a puppy.

A Galaxy Watch 6 Classic user relies on the native calendar app while Google Calendar is still not available.

Naturally, the main launch outside the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is Wear OS 4. The devices are the first to run Wear OS 4, which is Samsung's flagship version. Very good in the past. The watches also work on Samsung's One UI 5 Watch, so it's not a Wear OS experience. Nice Samsung instead. Right now it's not much different from Wear OS 3.5, but when calendars and Gmail arrive, I expect the Watch to be a more useful daily companion. At the same time, the option to transfer time between phones without rebooting is very welcome.

In terms of performance, Samsung offers an otherwise smooth user experience with minimal lag or dips. Despite the new Exynos W930 chipset, I haven't noticed a huge difference from last year, but that's not a problem. Both generations work efficiently and quickly, with fast recharge times and plenty of power. The latest series bumps RAM up to 2GB for the first time, but offers the same 16GB of storage. Setup still requires the Galaxy Wearable app, which isn't needed after launch. Sometimes I use the app to adjust the dials or view the settings on the big screen. Many things can be done in your hands.

What I dislike about the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic

In the early days of using this watch, the battery life wasn't great. I woke up twice within an hour of dying when I slept a lot in the tub. If you own a Galaxy Watch, you probably know what to expect. When you turn it on for the first time, Samsung Watch adapts to your usage conditions and consumes the processor. This usually takes about three days and can really affect battery life. Fortunately, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic managed to last more than 24 hours before the end of the review period, but it's still not as good as it should be.

The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic doesn't offer the same battery life buyers got with last year's Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

Samsung quotes 40 hours of use between charges, and my results came in about 30 hours. This happens when various GPS workouts, notifications, health features like skin temperature, and always-on display are turned off. I keep playing with the settings and hope the clock is still correct. When it's time to connect, the watch supports wireless charging. Each device comes with its own charger, similar to the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro charger. It takes around 70 minutes to fully charge the watch from scratch. I think the most effective way to skip levels or night stats is to load up in the shower.

In fact, I understand buyers have to choose between the classic rotating bezel and the Pro's better battery. It makes sense that Samsung doesn't offer both in one device. The combination diminishes one of the 5 Pro's strengths. I understand the decision, but I'm disappointed. While we'll have to wait for the inevitable Galaxy Watch 6 Pro to get the best of both worlds, I wish companies would continue to make the best possible devices, not the best possible.

The biggest appeal of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic series is the design options. If we want to see a rotating bezel in our hands, the device is instantly updated. However, other than the bezel, there isn't much that sets the watch apart. With Wear OS 4 returning to older devices, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 5 series will have more in common with Samsung's latest releases. It doesn't have enough fitness tracking analytics to compete with Garmin's range, and the app store isn't quite compatible with the Apple ecosystem.

I expected Samsung to blow us away this year, but instead we are left with frequent updates. The watch hasn't skimped on specs for Samsung phone users either, so anyone who doesn't own one will be missing out on a number of features like the ECG function.

The biggest weakness of the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is that it's not a huge step up from the 5 or 4 series.

The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic remains a powerful smartwatch and a useful gym companion. It does not raise the bar in the ever-present market. While some of my previous runs have recorded surprisingly short total distances, the GPS is still pretty good overall for fitness tracking. The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic's heart rate monitor fits well with my Polar Chest during indoor cycling. Sometimes the watch beats faster than the chest strap.

However, when we tested the watch during more strenuous sports like running and weightlifting, accuracy dropped slightly. This could be due in particular to the position of the device on my wrist. However, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is a more powerful device and manages slightly better heart rate accuracy even during wrist strain exercises. Overall accuracy is probably good enough for the average user. At this point, I don't recommend the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic only to advanced athletes. Samsung may also make improvements to the algorithm, so I'll keep testing to see how the watch performs over time.

Should you buy the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic?

Galaxy Watch 6 Classic vs wear os competition

Caitlin Cimino/Android Authority

If you no longer have a Samsung Galaxy Watch on your wrist and are on a budget, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic is a great buy. Technically, it's the best Wear OS watch on the market, with a great internals and a stylish look. I especially miss the rotating bezel which helps the watch stand out from the crowd.

If you don't mind the sporty look of the base model, you can save the most change by opting for the standard Galaxy Watch 6 ($299.99 at Samsung). For the most part, all other features are the same between the siblings, and the user experience is nearly identical. If a classic bezel is important to you, but the price is out of your league, the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic ($167 at Amazon) is still a solid device at a very low price. As noted, neither version offers battery life as good as last year's Galaxy Watch 5 Pro ($374 on Amazon). The Pro remains the top choice for rugged gear designed for sweaty gym workouts and trail runs.

The Watch 6 Classic is safe enough, but it still leads Samsung as the best choice for Android users looking for a premium smartwatch.

Outside of Samsung, Mobvoi makes a solid case with the TicWatch Pro 5 ($349 at Amazon): The device boasts fantastic battery life, a rotating digital crown, and a unique dual-screen display — unfortunately, its raised bezel. Also of mention is the Google Pixel Watch, but its successor will hit your wrist this fall: The first-generation Pixel Watch never quite lived up to expectations, but the Pixel Watch 2 is said to have more features. stronger and better battery life. as well as Wear OS 4 - it might be worth waiting to see how the next generation - Samsung's 2023 flagship - stacks up before making any purchases - if you're an iOS user reading this for fun, then you're probably Apple on the You

're happy with the Watch – or at least you should be – both the 8 Series and the Ultra offer a better experience for Apple users, especially since they're compatible with iOS, although you can wait for the 9 Series and the Watch. The Ultra 2s at this point in their lifecycle - the only Garmin smartwatches worth offering. It's the Venu 2 Plus ($449 at Amazon), but frankly, its app experience still doesn't match a Wear OS device: the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6
