Oppo MR Headset Announced Just Days Before Reality Pro But Only For Developers

The Oppo MR headset was announced a few days before Apple officially unveiled the Reality Pro, but it was only available in China and meant for developers.

The Oppo MR Glass Developer Edition features the same mixed reality (MR) lenses as the name suggests, and is very much in line with the company's long-term goals that Apple has announced for the glasses.

Oppo announced its product at the Augmented World Expo.

This state-of-the-art mixed reality (MR) device is equipped with the latest technology inside and out, giving advanced developers the flexibility to create and deliver exciting MR experiences [...]

Powered by the Snapdragon® XR2+ platform, OPPO MR Glass is powered by OPPO's proprietary SUPERVOOC. Fast charging and heart rate detection features open the door to many new applications.

Made of skin-friendly material, OPPO MR Glass is equipped with VPT (Video Pass Through) binocular technology, dual front RGB camera, pancake lens and 120Hz high refresh rate.

Oppo is committed because it doesn't yet know how to turn mixed reality (a combination of virtual reality and augmented reality) into compelling audio for consumers.

For innovation in MR applications, OPPO MR Glass is available in China as an official Snapdragon Spaces development kit to attract more developers to the field and push the boundaries of XR technology.

Oppo Air Glass, long view

As CNBC reported, the company's Apple Eyewear — the Oppo Air Glass prototype unveiled last year — is no ordinary product.

"In order to become a real product or a successful product, many things, including technology and applications, still need to be improved," Xu said of mixed reality. .

"Everyone wants to do AR because it has a lot of potential, but the technology is not there yet, it may take a few years," he said.

But the company shares that Apple believes the future holds great potential. In 2019, Apple executives announced that they believe the technology will replace mobile phones.

In the long term, Apple believes such devices will eventually replace smartphones, which executives told the group would happen "within a decade."

Oppo also shares this opinion.

Oppo is optimistic about the future of mixed reality and sees it as the next computing platform for smartphones.

"It has the potential to be a new computing platform," Xu Yi, director of XR Technology, told CNBC.

Apple will unveil Reality Pro at the WWDC keynote on Monday.
