Wear OS May Finally Have Its Own Apple Watchbeater, Thanks To Oppo
Oppo will reportedly release the Oppo Watch 5 and Oppo Watch 5 Pro later this year, a pair of Wear OS watches that, like their predecessors, strongly resemble the Apple Watch with their curved square displays. According to the leak, the Oppo Watch Series 5 and 5 Pro will have nearly twice the battery capacity of the Apple Watch Series 8, allowing for more use of features like sleep tracking.
The best Apple Watch models suffer from short battery life, although Apple may not believe it. The Apple Watch Series 8, for example, drains its 308 mAh battery pretty hard, with Apple estimating a battery life of just 18 hours on a full charge. However, in our Watch 8 review, we said, "In our first test, the Watch 8's battery lasted 38 hours on a single full charge - far longer than Apple's predicted 18 hours." one use is only 24-26 hours.
According to Lee's digital chat via Gizmochina, the Oppo Watch 5, codenamed "Dhumketu", will have a 570mAh battery. Even the previous model Oppo Watch 3 (Oppo will reportedly avoid the "4" moniker as that number is considered unlucky in Asian countries) can last from one and a half to 14 days in power saving mode. 400 mAh with battery.
The Oppo Watch 3 Pro has a 550mAh battery, which means the 5 Pro could have twice the battery capacity of the Apple Watch Series 8. With the same curved display, Wear OS users (including the new and improved Wear OS 4 released later in this year) can get an Apple Watch clone that not only competes, but outperforms the Apple competitor.
It would be nice to have a Wear OS 4-enabled watch that can last more than a day or two of battery life with heavy use, but it's not just the screen design or watch life that captures the imagination of watch users.
The Google Pixel Watch and Apple Watch seamlessly integrate into each other's networks, look beautiful, and are well thought out. Their fitness and health data algorithms are impressive: The Pixel Watch is based on Fitbit workouts from the last decade and uses the power of Apple Health and Apple Fitness+.
We're not sure if Oppo can offer the same immersive and aesthetically pleasing user experience as Apple and Google, but its Android phones are great (I've personally been using the Oppo Find X2 Pro for years) and the new Oppo Watch 5 series is just before landing. The latter must be running the latest version of Wear OS.
This could be a real contender for one of the best smartwatches for a) those who really want to use Wear OS and b) those who like the look of the Apple Watch but don't feel like switching from Android. Keep an eye on this space for more official announcements.
