Apple Faces Stiff Competition From Oppo For The Top Spot In Chinese Mobile Market

Apple in the first quarter, even as the market continues to shrink after a year of economic turmoil. Oppo dominates the Chinese smartphone market.

Shenzhen-based Oppo took the biggest share of smartphone shipments in China at 19.6%, with the iPhone closing in on Apple, according to the latest IDC data. However, estimates from Counterpoint and Canalys, which take into account sales and shipments, put Apple slightly ahead of Oppo. Apple managed to occupy the first place in the last quarter of 2022, which increased with the release of the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro series.

China's smartphone market has experienced a double-digit decline over the past year, largely due to a sharp decline in sales of Android devices, including phones made by Oppo, and even the eventual impact on Apple's iPhone line. Canalys said shipments to mainland China fell 11% in the first quarter from a year earlier, to the lowest level in a decade in the first quarter.

Apple's decision to drop the prices of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models in February was a smart move, according to IDC, although the release of the new yellow iPhone 14 didn't generate much excitement. In an effort to drum up buyer interest in the expensive device, which costs at least 5,999 yuan ($870) in China, the company launched a new color in early March.

IDC said Oppo beat its forecast for sales of premium devices in the latest quarter, helped by the return of its OnePlus sub-brand to the domestic market and positive reception of its foldable devices. Samsung Electronics, the world's leading maker of smartphones and foldable devices, has a small presence in China, with every local phone maker now offering at least one foldable model for sale.

None of the top sellers in China recorded positive growth. Vivo, Honor Mobile, Xiaomi Corp. At the end of the list are the main brands, each of which suffered a significant decrease compared to the same period last year. Official data shows that smartphone production in the world's second-largest economy has fallen by 13.8% this year, despite a recovery in the overall economy.

"The pandemic has affected consumer behavior in the medium to long term, as consumers tend to spend their income and conserve their fixed savings," Canalys analyst Lucas Chong said in a report on Thursday. "Vendors must provide reliable products to drive updates."
