OPPO Find X7 Ultra Review: Should You Buy It?
Find the OPPO X7 Ultra

OPPO has proven once again that it has what it takes to create one of the best smartphone hardware packages and continues to take mobile photography to the next level. The Find X7 Ultra makes us eagerly await the return of OPPO's best products to Western markets. We recommend importing it if you want a great phone that works out of the box, but once you forget about network compatibility issues and find software solutions for the rest, you won't be disappointed.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra review:

  • what is it in a word? The OPPO Find X7 Ultra is the latest flagship entry in the OPPO Find series. Despite the no-frills X6 Pro, the 2023 Ultra promises to deliver the best-in-class photography experience without getting into the other specs you'd expect from a high-end phone.
  • Where can I buy it? OPPO Find X7 Ultra is available in China. You can import the phone, but OPPO has no plans to officially launch it in Western markets.
  • What is the price? OPPO charges 5,999 yuan (~$834) for the base model of the Find X7 Ultra. You can pick up the phone from select retailers for around $1,000.
  • How do we test this? I tested the OPPO Find X7 Ultra for six days. Review section provided by OPPO.
  • Is this valid? OPPO has created the best camera phone with the Find X7 Ultra. The screen, charging capabilities and unique design are equally attractive, making it a fantastic flagship that should be on everyone's radar. However, without an official Western distribution site and a Chinese version of Color OS, we unfortunately cannot recommend the phone to an international audience.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra: the best camera phone?

OPPO Find X7 Ultra back

I was very impressed with the quality and versatility of the OPPO Find X6 Pro camera. Unfortunately, the phone's availability was extremely limited, but its photographic capabilities made it worth it for serious mobile photographers. Almost. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra builds on its successful formula by introducing a 6x periscope zoom camera. This is another 50 MP sensor (there are four in total), although smaller at 1/2.51 inch. The 2.8x zoom has a larger 1/1.56-inch sensor and a narrower f/4.3 aperture than other phone lenses. Sure, it's difficult to fit a big telephoto lens into a phone, but despite OPPO's claims of a "quad rear camera," I don't expect the secondary periscope camera to be as good as the three others.

However, its long-range performance is right on par with the best in the industry, and OPPO says its four high-resolution cameras offer versatility you won't find anywhere else, especially precise focal lengths and without the need to resort to digital zoom. . Let's talk about some samples. I also took the Google Pixel 8 Pro and the new Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra to see how the phone fared.

Like the Find X6 Pro, color, detail, exposure, and white balance are very, very good on all four rear lenses. Although the phone doesn't have a night mode, it works great in low light. But forgive me for being pedantic: contrast and saturation can be a little high in some scenes, HDR isn't as strong as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, and the dynamic range of the 6x periscope isn't as good. Three more lenses in the light. But none of this will ruin your photos.

My biggest complaint is the level of chromatic aberration in daylight, a sign of the lens being too wide aperture. Additionally, there is some distortion at the edges of the ultra-wide-angle lens, which further indicates that such a small lens has reached its limits. That said, you'll rarely get a bad photo no matter what lens you shoot with, and that's more than I can say for other smartphone cameras I've used.

I like to zoom when taking photos and spend a lot of time switching between the four lenses. I was never afraid that zooming in would result in lower quality. In fact, this year, with the new 6x zoom periscope camera, I felt more confident moving the phone longer distances.

I found the new second periscope lens very useful at 10x and even lower, allowing it to keep up with the competition at a distance. But you'll also get a 65mm lens for macro and portrait photography, something you won't get from Google and Samsung. Even if you're not a fan of the Hasselblad camera's image processing (I upgraded to the latest low saturation implementation), the durability of the lenses sets this line of cameras apart.

Speaking of which, the Find X7 Ultra excels at portraits, although the selfie camera's ultra-wide field of view distorts facial contours. While it's a little softer than the competition, when you're primarily using the camera for selfies, you'll still be greeted with nice lighting and exposure, good but not too harsh skin detail, and skin tones. rich. Combined with the natural bokeh and 65mm focal length of the 2.8x zoom lens, the Find X7 Ultra's portraits are worthy of a modest mirrorless camera. Especially compared to the powerful Pixel 8 Pro or the powerful Galaxy S24 Ultra. We're a long way from the blurry faces of the iPhone. If you love taking photos of your friends and family, the Find X7 Ultra is an absolute winner.

While the quest for perfection may be endless, OPPO is getting closer with the Find X7 Ultra. There's no doubt that this phone has one of the most reliable and versatile camera sets on the market. Combined with 4K60 recording capability on all lenses, powerful video stabilization and 10-bit Dolby Vision HDR, the Find X7 Ultra should be on the radar of every mobile photographer and videographer and raises the bar for camera phones photo.

Is the OPPO Find X7 Ultra worth buying?

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra's camera is excellent, but it takes more than that to be a good smartphone, and this flagship takes its time there too. They feature a stunning AMOLED display with 120Hz dynamic refresh, a luxurious original leather case on the back, well-known OPPO details such as 100W wired SuperVoice and 50W fast wireless charging. W, an IP68 rating and a fast Snapdragon processor. 8 Gen 3. On paper

, the hardware is top-notch. notch and the phone looks just as stylish. The faux leather feels great to hold and OPPO makes the camera body look sleek. This is a truly impressive smartphone.

However, we have doubts about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 implementation in the phone. For starters, we couldn't install any test apps from the Play Store on our review unit, and the fake APKs we installed performed poorly on GeekBench 6 and PCMark. 3.0., unless you put the phone in high performance mode. To make matters worse, our graphical stress test caused the phone to display an overheating message and drain a ton of battery. That said, I had no issues running apps and games on the phone, but our results suggest the Find X7 Ultra might struggle to cope with demanding users in the long run.

The installed Chinese Color 14 (Android 14) system is also disappointing. I ended up using Baidu and the FineQ Keyboard to install the Play Store and my popular app collection, but it was a frustrating experience. Even after a lot of work, it is impossible to remove all the apps and services that are not useful to Western audiences. Importers beware. Issues aside, Color OS 14 runs great on Android 14, offering plenty of customization options and slightly better battery management.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra offers the best hardware we want to see in many markets.

OPPO Find X7 Ultra changes the appearance of battery and charging. The 5,000mAh battery is enough to get users through the day, but our testing shows that the Find X7 Ultra doesn't have the longest battery life among high-end phones. Battery drain is an issue when running game tests, but the GPU can run at full capacity, which is not the case in most games. However, the aggressive background removal feature of Color OS mentioned above can help you enjoy the second day easily. If you need to charge it, the phone can draw 85 watts from the mains to fully charge it in 30 minutes. Quickly.

The overall software configuration and lack of warranty make it difficult to recommend the OPPO Find X7 Ultra to international consumers, despite its capable hardware package. OPPO's recent deal with Nokia means its flagship smartphones are expected to return to western shores in the near future.
