Progress, a provider of infrastructure software, has introduced a new version of Progress OpenEdge, a software development platform that facilitates the creation of business applications serving more than 100,000 customers worldwide. OpenEdge 12.8 enables organizations to improve development workflows, increase database efficiency, strengthen security and keep up with technological advances.
The platform offers features to improve application security and data protection. These include dynamic data masking (DDM), which enables security administrators or database administrators to comply with data privacy regulations such as GDPR or HIPAA by hiding sensitive data based on user roles. This version supports the Hardware Security Module (HSM) to provide a secure environment for cryptographic operations and protect sensitive information. It also combines OpenSSL 3.1 with Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3, which updates security protocols and cryptographic algorithms to improve application encryption and data integrity.
Application development platforms increase developer productivity by providing ABL (Advanced Business Language) developers with tools and features to streamline their workflow. It integrates OpenTelemetry, an observability framework that provides statistics and traceability information for managing OpenEdge applications and informs developers about application performance, helping them identify and fix code bottlenecks. In addition, incremental support allows developers to change code bases and rebuild only the parts that have changed, reducing build time and facilitating faster development iterations.
The platform improves application integration and management with new monitoring and management features. It integrates with Apache Kafka, enabling businesses to add real-time data streams through event streaming and data integration. The OpenEdge Command Center (OECC) provides tools and APIs to manage OpenEdge applications and to provide monitoring, management, and diagnostics. It facilitates integration with application performance management (APM) tools. This release enables more database management tasks to be performed online, reducing downtime by avoiding offline maintenance. Improvements include database operations such as scan/restore and backup/restore, resulting in better performance.
