Chengdu plans to invest a total of 15 million yuan ($2 million) in public and private bookstores, the Chengdu government announced Tuesday.

The government announced at a book promotion event that the "Management Measures to Fund Physical Libraries" plan is mainly aimed at the High-tech Industrial Development Zone (HIZ) in Chengdu, Sichuan (Southwest) of China.

The purpose of the event is to create a comfortable environment for reading among the people and build a "high-tech book zone".

As part of the measures, 5 million yuan ($700,000) in government funds are planned to improve and strengthen physical bookstores in the high-tech field. The grants include: project grants consisting of six components, creating new physical bookstores, creative works, updating decor, urban spaces for reading and creating, organizing various events, reading and rent subsidies.

In addition, By 2024, they will distribute 10 million yuan bonds to physical bookstores and promote 69 "TOP 10 bookstores" in the region. This idea provides a 24/7 reading platform with the first ten books. Selling books by providing a convenient and rich cultural experience for the public.

Voucher bookstores in Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone will start operations in 2024. In the high-tech sector, 13 certified physical bookstores will be involved in various fields, including books, cultural and creative products, and dining events.

As of this year, Chengdu has more than 3,600 physical bookstores, ranking first in the country. The ever-increasing national reading atmosphere has made the "Chengdu Book" a famous symbol of the city.

The high-tech zone has two "most beautiful bookstores" in the country, eight "most beautiful bookstores" in Chengdu, and nine "bookstores" in Chengdu. Opened since June 2023, the new library building in Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone has welcomed nearly one million visitors.

According to the Seventh National Census, the total resident population aged 15 to 59 in Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone is more than 75 percent, and the number of people with higher education and higher education ranks first in Chengdu.

The "young and highly educated" structure of the population creates favorable conditions for a culture of reading.

"We will use this event as an opportunity to create a strong spirit of reading books and continue to enrich various cultural services," the head of Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone said at the event on Tuesday.
