Samsung More Accurately Shows How Much Storage Is On Your Phone In Android 14

Samsung was criticized by several people earlier this year when it reported that the Galaxy S23's system files were taking up a total of 60GB of storage space. That's not true, and with Android 14, Samsung updated its software to make that clear.

When the Galaxy S23 series launched, Samsung was criticized for featuring more than 60 GB of "system files" memory, which is 25 percent of the base model Galaxy S23 Ultra's memory. And at first glance, it is an amazing sight.

But this is not true.

Instead, the reason Samsung's firmware shows such high numbers is the nature of the memory. "Gigabytes" is a measure of memory space that we all know, but "Gigabytes" is the most accurate way of measuring how much memory space is available and what the software uses to display it. It's a different system, but gigabytes are measured in powers of 1024 and gigabytes in powers of 1000. This actually leads to a 512GB smartphone with 476GB of storage.

If you buy a device that advertises 512GB and see 476GB in the memory settings, you may be disappointed. Therefore, most of the devices lie, statistics show that its size is 512 GB. Some additional percentage points are usually assigned to one of the available categories.

In 2023, Samsung's smartphones were criticized for having all their "system files" grouped together. In fact, Samsung files and bloatware increase the storage space used on the device, thus limiting the storage space that should be available to end users.

As noted by our own Max Weinbach, Samsung's Android 14 update changes the user interface to display storage space differently. Memory allocation in One UI 6.0 now lists this memory option under "Other apps" and now accurately displays the total memory used by system files above 16 GB.

This appears to be a change for the better, as it allows users to better understand what's going on in their storage. That said, there are still some odd jobs, as system files were previously estimated to take up 20GB of memory for UI 5. Samsung has made some significant improvements based on Android 14, UI 6 ,

which is still in beta but is expected to roll out to the Galaxy S23 and other devices late This year.
