Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023: Flip 5 To Go Big, Fold 5 Not So Much
Samsung will welcome the foldable Galaxy Unpacked 2023 on July 26 in Seoul, South Korea. If you believe the rumors, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will turn heads thanks to its large external display. The Galaxy Z Fold 5, meanwhile, arrives as an incremental update. But Unpacked will be more than a folding motorboat. Apart from these two flagships, Samsung will also launch the next generation of Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Tab S series in the form of Watch 6 and Tab S9. Here's what you can expect from the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023 in July 2023.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5
I'm really excited about the Galaxy Z Flip 5 because it's about to receive a major update. For four generations, the flip cover had a small cover screen that only allowed access to certain widgets and information at a glance.
On the other hand, Motorola leads the cover screen game with its Razr Plus, which features a 3.6-inch cover screen that lets you run almost any app without opening the phone. I'm currently using the Razr Plus and it's amazing how involved Motorola has been in making a clamshell display.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is said to have a 3.4-inch clamshell display. Since Samsung is close to Google and One UI is an intuitive UI, I hope Flip 5 has some tricks up its sleeve to stand out in this segment.
Inside, it may feature a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, which is expected to remain the same as its predecessor. However, the next major update will most likely be in the design of the hinge. According to a tweet from Ross Young, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature a new hinge design to reduce gutter-like creases on the internal display.
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, along with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. I hope it offers better battery performance than the Flip 4 as the flagship chipset has had a positive impact on battery life this year. From the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra to the Xiaomi 13 Pro and iQOO 11, SoCs never disappoint.
There are no major leaks on the optics front, but the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is said to get a camera upgrade. It might have a 50MP main sensor and a 12MP ultra wide-angle sensor. But still nothing concrete about it.
I wish Samsung offered faster charging on the Flip 5. For reference, the Flip 4 supports 25W wired fast charging, and the Flip 5 will likely continue to do so. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to launch for the same $999 price tag as the Flip 4.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5
Don't expect a redesign of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. There may be some big changes under the hood, but it looks and feels the same, meaning it has a taller aspect ratio than the Pixel Fold. Samsung's fifth-generation foldable device is said to feature a redesigned hinge.
According to renders from Smartprix, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will feature a new hinge, just like the Flip 5 to reduce the visibility of the crease. You can expect better IP ratings for dust and water resistance.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is said to look very similar to the Fold 4. That means it could have the same 6.2-inch coverage screen and a 7.6-inch foldable screen with support for a 120Hz refresh rate on both. . Like the Flip 5, it is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. It could pack the same 4400mAh battery and triple rear cameras as the Fold 4.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 starts at $1,800, and the Fold 5 probably won't be cheaper. By comparison, the Pixel Fold costs the same.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 series
Samsung has ditched the Classic Watch 5 model in favor of the Pro version. According to MySmartPrice, we will go for the Classic option with a physical rotating bezel. I don't think Samsung is discontinuing the Pro variant, but at least for now it's aiming for a semi-annual release.
According to the leaked image, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic will feature a physical rotating bezel, which the Watch Series 5 does not have. I prefer the physical rotating bezel because it feels like a more intuitive way to interact with the small screen on my wrist. The regular Watch 6 is designed to look like the Watch 5 and offers software support for interacting with the bezel.
The Galaxy Watch 6 series is said to have a larger 1.47-inch display. It could be a microLED panel, reports SamMobile, which is an upgrade of the Galaxy Watch 5 series' Super AMOLED screen with a layer of sapphire crystal on top for protection. For the uninitiated, microLED panels offer higher brightness, better contrast control, and are more efficient in terms of battery consumption.
Samsung's new smartwatch is said to have a 10% performance boost over its predecessor. The Watch Series 5 runs smoothly in day-to-day use, and I see no reason to be skeptical of the Watch 6's performance. The Galaxy Watch 6 40mm supposedly packs 300mAh, an improvement over the 285mAh Li-ion battery in the Galaxy Watch 6. his predecessor. All models are to have a larger battery.
Samsung switched from its Tizen operating system to Google Wear OS with the Galaxy Watch 4. In the third generation, Wear OS on the Watch 6 should offer a wider range of features. The Galaxy Watch 5 costs $279, and I wish the Watch 6 launched at the same price.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series
Samsung introduced the new Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra to the company's flagship tablet line last year. We may get the updated Tab S9 Ultra this year. It is said to have a huge 14.6 inch screen. The Tab S9 and S9 Plus are expected to feature 11-inch and 12.4-inch OLED displays, respectively.
The Galaxy Tab S9 range will feature the aforementioned Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 flagship chipset. The top-end Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is said to be available in a 16GB RAM variant for those who need an Android tablet with so lots of storage space.
When Samsung announces many new products, my eyes fall on the Galaxy Z Flip 5. The big screen on the clamshell finally makes this foldable phone worth buying. And coupled with Qualcomm's best processor in 2023, I expect it to last a full day, which isn't the case with the Flip 4. I'll be giving you live coverage on July 26, so stay tuned for the next one.
