Samsung Brought A 5K Display To CES 2023 That Could Take On Apples Studio Display
Samsung today unveiled a new high-performance monitor ahead of CES 2023. The Viewfinity 5K is the latest edition of the Viewfinity range and comes with a number of attractive features that are must-haves for the discerning professional user. Users, especially those considering Apple Studio Display alternatives.
As the name suggests, this screen has a 5K resolution, which makes it one of the company's most pixel-rich screens. The 16:9 panel is housed in a slim 27-inch metal chassis and features IPS technology for wide viewing angles and color accuracy. Speaking of which, Viewfinity 5K has a wide color gamut (99% DCI-P3) that lets you work with color accuracy.
With Smart Screen Calibration, you can wake up your smartphone from sleep mode. It allows you to point your phone's camera at the screen and use Samsung's screen calibration tool to get perfect picture quality.
Given its higher specs and the rivalry between Samsung and Apple, a comparison to the Apple Studio Display seems appropriate. Both have 5K resolution, a webcam, and ultra-thin bezels.
The Viewfinity 5K's HDR rating of 600 means it can be very bright, though it's not yet known if this is an official VESA specification. We also don't know Viewfinity 5K's contrast ratio at the time of writing, but since this is a regular IPS panel, don't expect anything to compete with OLED.
It's a little disappointing that Samsung doesn't offer mini-LED or OLED options. Of course, this will significantly increase the price, but in terms of image quality, nothing compares. While the Viewfinity 5K panel still looks impressive, we'd love to see the company replace IPS with something better, as it did with its new Odyssey gaming monitors.
Interestingly, the Viewfinity 5K is matte rather than glossy. Matte screens reduce screen brightness and clarity, but reduce glare and reflections.
However, there are plenty of options if you want to connect peripherals. Viewfinity 5K is compatible with Thunderbolt 4, USB-C, DisplayPort and HDMI 2.1 and can support 96W Power Delivery which means it can take advantage of most laptops. It can also offer a host of customization options, including the ability to flip vertically to portrait mode.
Other useful additions include a detachable 4K webcam that can automatically center objects in the frame, and Viewfinity 5K can be used as a smart TV platform.
Pricing hasn't been revealed at this time, but we expect it to be a fairly expensive monitor. Samsung says it will go on sale in early 2023.
In addition to Viewfinity 5K, Samsung also announced an update to the M8 smart TV that was shown at CES last year. The new M80C is 27 inches in size (original size was 32 inches) and some smart features have been updated. The new My Content feature brings photos, graphics, and weather to an immersive screen without connecting an entire PC, while the SmartThings Hub integrates to control smart devices from the screen.
Pricing and availability of the Smart Monitor M80C are yet to be announced.
