Samsung Is Secretly Working On A New AR Product

Samsung may have a new AR (Augmented Reality) product in the works. Dutch publication Galaxy Club has identified the product under development with model number SM-I120, but details are scarce. While we can't rule out the possibility of a more sophisticated viewer, it could be a pair of augmented reality glasses.

Samsung abandoned its VR (virtual reality) efforts a few years ago and shifted its focus to AR. Over the years, he has filed patent applications for many augmented reality products. The company showed off a prototype of the first generation of augmented reality glasses at CES 2020. The duo released an official concept video shortly after, giving us an idea of what to expect. However, after more than two years, no such product has come out of Samsung's doors yet.

Meanwhile, the Korean giant continued to grow. He has filed several patent applications and created an augmented reality glasses development kit that allows third-party developers to create augmented reality software. The latter received Bluetooth SIG certification last October with model number SM-I110. The recently spotted SM-I120 appears to be the latest model. Unfortunately, no one knows whether a development kit or prototype device is available, or whether Samsung has a commercial AR product even close to hitting the market. If so, we might see it hit the market in 2023.

For now, all we know is that Samsung's augmented reality technology is working behind the scenes. The SM-I120 is somewhere in the company's R&D lab and may or may not see the light of day. Maybe it will take time for the company to find a revolutionary product. Although they have been around for years, AR, VR and MR (Mixed Reality) are still seen as future technology. Many big names have launched in the growing mobile technology product segment, including Apple, Google and Meta. Therefore, Samsung does not need to rush to launch such a mature product.

We are yet to confirm that Samsung will release an AR device soon. But when it does, the company will equip it with a micro-LED display. These panels have an advantage over OLED panels in terms of brightness or luminance, Samsung Display Group Leader Kim Min-woo explained at the MicroLED Display Workshop industry event in South Korea. Maybe Google echoed this. The company acquired micro-LED display startup Raxium in May this year to boost its augmented reality efforts.
