Rising Online Crackdowns Across Asia Target Citizens, Big Tech
HO CHI MINH CITY/BANGKOK - During Vietnam's 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown last year, blogger Bui Van Thuan took to Facebook to criticize the government's plan to have soldiers deliver food to people trapped in their homes in Ho Chi Minh. City. He was arrested a few days later.
Thuan, 41, a former teacher in northern Hoa Binh, was sentenced last month to eight years and another five years in prison on propaganda charges.
Vietnamese authorities accused Thua of "producing, storing, disseminating or disseminating information, material and products directed against the nation," a charge that is increasingly being applied to online content as the state tightens its control over the Internet, they say. human rights groups. .
"The Vietnamese government has long controlled the country's mainstream media," said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch. Now they are trying to take over the Internet space."
“They have passed various laws for this and are expanding the state apparatus to prosecute people online, make decisions to change and remove content from platforms, use online trolls and control internet access,” he said.
Thuan is the latest target of Internet influence in Vietnam, as authorities arrested dozens of journalists and bloggers, as well as a popular noodle vendor, on similar charges.
Last month, Vietnamese authorities said they were tightening rules on social media platforms to deal with "fake" content, so it must be removed within 24 hours, making the Southeast Asian country one of the most examined in the world by the regulation of social networks. companies. .
However, Vietnam is not alone. Internet censorship is at an all-time high in 2022, with a record number of governments blocking political, social or religious content, according to Freedom House, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit.
In the annual report, he said the rise in "digital repression" had dire consequences for basic rights, including freedom of expression, access to information and privacy, "especially for people living under authoritarian regimes."
“In some countries, it is about limiting the voices of political opponents, activists and critics of the government,” said Damar Juniarto, executive director of the Southeast Asia Digital Rights Freedom of Expression Network (SafeNet).
"But governments also want to control big tech companies, they see them as very powerful and influential," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
"DRACONIAN" Calendar More than three-quarters of the world's 4.5 billion Internet users live in countries where authorities penalize online expression, according to Freedom House, which ranks China as the worst environment for Internet freedom.
Elsewhere in Asia, Indonesia introduced rules this year that require illegal or "disturbing public order" content to be removed from social media platforms within four hours if deemed urgent, and within 24 hours of otherwise. Those who do not comply may be subject to fines, criminal liability, or deportation.
His new penal code also tightened controls on "fake news" and online insults against the president.
Vietnam's Information and Communications Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said his new laws were necessary because "fake news risks spreading if tackled slowly." The platforms of companies that do not comply with the indicated term may be banned.
Meanwhile, Singapore last month passed an online safety bill that would require social networking sites to block "harmful content" during certain hours, or authorities could require service providers to block access to such content. content for national users.
In October, India said it would set up a government panel to look into user complaints about decisions by social media platforms to regulate content, raising concerns about censorship .
And in Thailand, a new law that came into effect this month allowed authorities to force online service providers and social media platforms to remove content in less than 24 hours without a court order.
Digital rights groups Access Now and Article 19 said in a statement that the short duration of the cancellation was "mysterious" and "puts unnecessary time pressure on the platforms to respond, encouraging them to err on the side of caution."
Thai authorities have said the new rules are necessary for national security and "public safety" purposes.
Asian market growth Populous Asian countries are big markets for social media platforms: India has more than 400 million Facebook users and almost half a billion on YouTube. Indonesia has around 176 million Facebook users and around 139 million YouTube users.
According to SafeNet's Juniarto, the crackdown on online content that has been ramped up during the pandemic to curb misinformation is an attempt by Asian governments to rein in big tech companies.
"With elections approaching in several countries, we can expect more restrictions on the Internet.
"These are large and growing markets for platforms, so they will have to think about how to deal with these new regulations and increased government oversight," he said.
Facebook's parent company Meta and Alphabet's YouTube did not respond to requests for comment on the new laws. Company officials previously told Reuters they were concerned about online content compliance and possible government interference.
Thuan's wife, Trin Thi Nong, said Vietnamese officials were "more transparent" about the new rules. She said she was told to limit her social media posts about her husband and that she saw him and his family both online and offline.
"I am very worried," said Ms. Nhung, a honey seller.
Vietnamese authorities said they found more than 100 posts by Thawan on two Facebook accounts, more than two dozen of which were "anti-state."
Ms. Nhung said authorities were unable to prove that the Facebook account cited in the charges belonged to her and said her husband was innocent.
"I am very sad, but I do not regret his actions," the woman said, saying it was difficult leaving Thawne with her seven-year-old daughter.
"I will always support him because I trust him and I'm proud of him." - Thomson Reuters Foundation

Samsung has long been a leader in Android smartwatches. And while wearables are great at tracking health and fitness in the Samsung Health app, there aren't many options for Samsung smartwatch owners to share and export their data. Google's health tracking platform, Google Fit, can act as a central hub for your fitness data from various fitness apps and services. The problem is that Samsung Health does not allow you to export data to Google Fit.
POLICE VIDEOS FOR ANDROID TODAY
Google wants to solve this problem with Health Connect, which brings together your health data from multiple apps and services in one place where connected apps can easily access it. How to sync Samsung Health data to Google Fit using Health Connect.
What is Hit Connect?
Health Connect is a platform that consists of a set of APIs where multiple applications and services can read (or write) your health metrics. Fitness apps currently need to be manually integrated with other similar data sharing services. For example, if you use Strava to record your runs, other apps like Sleep My Cycle won't be able to see the data. If you're using Sleep as Android to monitor your sleep quality, other activity tracking apps won't be able to see the data either until they add support for it.
Health Connect is designed to solve this problem. Any fitness app can write collected data to Health Connect, which other apps can retrieve from it. This allows applications to communicate with each other without compromising privacy.
Health Connect supports the sharing of a variety of health data, including activity type, body measurements, cycle tracking, vital signs, and more.
How to set up Health Connect
Before you can sync Samsung Health with Google Fit, you need to install and set up Health Connect on your phone.
Download Health Connect on your Android phone from the Play Store.

After installing Health Connect, you will see the "Sync with Health Connect" banner for the first time when you open Google Fit.
Click Start .
On the Health Connect Sync page , select Configure.
Give Fit access to your Health Connect data. You can allow access to all data or select categories individually.
Click Allow to continue.
Once connected, Google Fit will read data provided by Health Connect over the past 30 days to retrieve existing data stored by other services. You can verify that Google Fit is syncing data with Health Connect by doing the following:
Open the Google Fit app on your phone.
Click the profile button on the bottom navigation bar.
Click the " Settings " button at the top.
Make sure " Sync Fit with Health Connect " is checked.

I think I'm going to choose a range of technologies this year, from the powerful Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra to the self-presenting Steam Deck to the very good Geekom mini PC. I didn't expect it to be a MacBook Air M2.
Years ago, I inherited an old-school MacBook Air from a colleague, and although I'm not a macOS pro, I love this little laptop. When Apple redesigned the Air and added the M2 chip, I was excited and caught my eye.
The MacBook Air M1 received good reviews, but the design feels dated. But the 2022 MacBook Air looks fresh. And seeing that the new Air was critically acclaimed, I decided to buy it.
But as soon as I made the purchase, I immediately felt buyer's remorse.
Think MacBook
I chose to pay my MacBook Air M2 in interest-free installments to avoid this lump sum and keep the money in an account with a higher interest rate. It also means I can buy the 512 GB mode with additional GPU cores.
But despite that move, when I was getting around £60 a month, I couldn't help but feel like I'd made an overly forgiving purchase. After all, I have a very good laptop with Windows.
When the MacBook Air arrived, I couldn't get rid of that feeling. In fact, I was surprised at how unfamiliar macOS was and wondered if I had made a serious mistake.
So began my journey to relearn macOS and adapt to a slightly different keyboard layout. Over time, I noticed that many things I liked were small, but provided great interaction with the laptop.
The Force Touch trackpad is excellent and offers a large tactile surface, which makes the trackpad more comfortable to use than a mediocre mouse replacement. It really lives up to its advertising.
The 13.5-inch screen also impresses with its brightness, color and contrast. Sure, the notch looks a bit silly up close, but thinner bezels are a good compromise. And macOS is often good at hiding fragments.
Breath of fresh air
As you get more familiar with macOS, this value only increases. The sleek, thin design is impressive, and while the Macbook Air can get hot, the M2's performance never suffered.
I'm definitely not a video editor, so silicon rarely comes across. But even with multiple apps open and multiple tabs onscreen, the Air never felt sluggish.
This prompted me to try a few games; Air won't be running Cyberpunk 2077 anytime soon, but it can run less demanding games like Divinity Original Sin 2 and Disco Elysium, both of which are great games. Not to mention, it's great for Apple Arcade games like Game of Thrones: Tale of Crows.
There's something completely new about using a quiet laptop that doesn't have the quirks Windows can give and feels great as a complete package for everyday use.
However, the MacBook Air M2 held its own and won me over when I went to IFA 2022 in September.
I went to an almost paid-for tech conference in Berlin; I think I did a quick reboot.
The sheer efficiency of the M2 chip is the real star of the show, seemingly draining power when I'm live blogging or just sitting with my laptop in sleep mode. By the way, Air activates instantly, which makes it particularly good at covering busy conferences.
So when I got back to London, I fell in love with the MacBook Air M2.
Of course, this is not ideal; There are no such laptops yet. The keyboard just doesn't have the tactile feedback of a Dell XPS 13 or Surface Laptop 5. And I want an SD card reader. I complained about only having two USB-C ports, but using MagSafe to charge them frees them up. And what USB A lacks is generally in line with today's ultraportable laptops.
Overall, I think the MacBook Air M2 is the best laptop for just about anyone who doesn't need to render 4K video on the go. And here is my 2022 device; I wonder where Apple might take the next MacBook Air.
Dec 22. It may be too late this year, but the holidays are just around the corner. Ramachandra Chemitiganty advises diabetics to plan ahead.
When you look at holidays like Christmas and especially Thanksgiving, there are some common health risks, like injury from decoration, says Kemitiganty, an endocrinologist and assistant professor at Texas Tech University's Center for Health Sciences.
“But one thing about diabetes is that the holidays are a season of stress, partying and overeating. Overeating affects diabetes in the same way that the stress that comes with it — planning, waiting, traveling — everything that comes with it. “So I call it private diabetes. “Your patients need to know what different foods do to the sugar you eat, and they need to have strategies,” Chemtiganty says.
Not everyone can eat right all the time; We are human, so there are times when you feel the need to overdo it.
“If you are planning to eat this food, we use some tricks and tricks in terms of adjusting your medication... to make sure you don't spike your sugar. You may be slightly overweight or obese, but the sugar will be under control," he said.
He added that people should make sure they have enough medicines and supplies for testing during the holidays.
“Many people realize on Christmas Eve that they don’t have medicine, or they are traveling and don’t take medicine with them, or they have lost it in their bag,” Chimtegante says. “I think they have to be very deliberate to make sure because I don't think anyone is open. Doctors' offices will be closed, some pharmacies will be closed, so that's another simple thing to fix."
The hard part is managing your food and controlling your inventory.
“Fortunately, there is technology where you don't have to cut yourself to pieces. You can wear a bandage on your arm or belly and the new technology will continue to monitor your sugar levels…give you a notification on your phone,” Chimtegante said. So you don't have to worry about hurting your fingers."
The machine understands what you eat and gives feedback. It can be controlled with insulin or tablets.
He noted that in most cases people do not plan vacations.
“Many of them are trying to fix it, and nothing terrible happens. But you end up in a hospital with two or three patients, which is completely avoidable. Holidays are not the season for other patients,” Chimtegante says.
He also said that he had always said that diabetes was unlike any other disease we know of.
“Everything we do affects our blood sugar levels. If you are sick for a long time, it affects your blood sugar levels. If you exercise too much, it affects your blood sugar levels. If you don't eat on time, it affects your blood sugar levels. "For blood sugar. It affects sugar. Sugar," Cimitagante said.
She adds that diabetes itself can increase anxiety and exacerbate stress.
“The better we prepare, the easier it will be,” he said.
Asked if people should exercise more during the holidays, Chimitagante said it does little to compensate for their sugar intake.
“I give the example of ordering fettuccine alfredo from our favorite Olive Garden, which contains about 2,000 calories. To burn them, you need to run on a treadmill for about 20 hours. An hour of exercise on a treadmill at an average speed will burn about 100 calories,” Chimtegante says. Control sugar, but watch the calorie content of the food you eat.
Diabetics should generally consume between 1800 and 2000 calories per day, depending on body weight. “We rarely need more than this,” Kimettigante added.
Another problem is drunkenness during the holidays.
“We talked about injuries, overeating and stress, but if you're a diabetic, drinking alcohol is probably one of the worst things you can do because two things happen… all the carbohydrates in alcohol increase blood sugar. but alcohol suppresses some of the liver's functions and disrupts its function, so later the sugar level can rise and fall. And it spreads everywhere. Again, light calories exacerbate diabetes.”
“If you drink again, you don't know how much you eat, so you eat a lot. If you drink a lot, you switch to unhealthy food. This is a vicious circle. The key is moderation… Do things in moderation and plan your meals. Do it, plan. For training…and make sure you have all the supplies and food for the holidays,” Chimtegante said.
Medicines are effective in treating diabetes, but they are very expensive.
“Depending on your insurance plan, it may or may not be covered,” he said. He added that you should talk to your doctor.
People need to identify what causes them the most stress and the situations that cause them the most stress.
“When we're stressed…our bodies crave calories and other distractions like alcohol, so if you know what's causing stress, you can prepare for it. ... him without reaching for a walnut pie or a glass." Another beer,” Chimtegante says.

Tech's Highly Paid Versions Of Homer Simpson Won't Be Missed
As head of Twitter, Elon Musk is running a real-time public experiment. Most notable are his efforts to transform the social media platform, which has more influence over the national media and political conversation than any of its rivals, into a freer and more transparent forum. In handing over a trove of internal files to a number of journalists, he also revealed Twitter's close relationship with Musk and government censors, including the FBI.
However, it could be argued that the censorship controversy is secondary to the long-term impact of Musk's experiment. Musk's willingness to clean house (reportedly firing more than two-thirds of former Twitter employees) could send waves across Silicon Valley, driving a dagger into the heart of leftist ideology in America's powerful tech sector.
This is because the simple performance of the application itself has not suffered. The discussions were mostly about who could tweet, seeing that as the only downside to using it. This raises a very serious question that many would like to avoid. What else to do but respond to emails from FBI agents and demand a tag for two out of three Twitter employees with an estimated average salary of $150,000 a year?
Musk's tenure and decisions as CEO are a direct challenge to an entire class of high-paid managers whose six-figure (and sometimes seven-figure) jobs are looking fatter and scattered as the tech sector grows.
Perhaps the Achilles heel of our ruling class is a lack of wisdom or culture, or even a deep devotion to religion, but most of them are, after all, paid versions of Homer Simpson. The slide of universities into institutions of ideological accreditation has had enormous cultural value, yes, but it has also had a highly elastic effect on meritocracy and performance that has eclipsed politics. By the numbers, the Ivy League title still creates a "good life" for those who win it, but what most of them create for the bottom line is more of an open question.
Joel Roth, Twitter's former head of trust and security and a frequent correspondent for the FBI, is a near-perfect representative of a class that could in all seriousness be called a highly successful capitalist version of the Soviet commissars. In other words, hall of fame observers are well paid.
Roth, again, is the best example of a very popular phenomenon on Twitter. His LinkedIn profile offers some suggestions for business qualifications that go beyond ideology: his "research and education focuses on understanding how policy, governance and code affect the types of companies that can create a safe and secure Internet." protected and how "the choices of developers, designers and legislators can result in the systematic displacement of certain types of identities and communities into the digital margins". In short, his resume reads like a woke scientist or activist, not an engineer.
Roth alone is one of the most successful figures in his dynasty, but there are hundreds of thousands of Joel Roths who are firmly entrenched in the middle management ranks of the Fortune 500, earning six figures instead of seven. Their wages account for quite a large amount of budget costs.
Perhaps for the same reason that James Burnham has become the prophet of our time, our modern managerial economy seems unparalleled in the production of what anthropologist David Graeber calls "ox labor." Increasingly, the rationale for these jobs, especially in HR and diversity departments, is political rather than economic. As with ESG fraud, the supposed profits meant to please people and money have little economic explanation. Executives, perhaps more than most of us, constantly hear about the supposed performance benefits of diversity, inclusion and social responsibility, and why they should be hiring graduates of the new diversity, equity and social responsibility graduate program.
But Musk's presence on Twitter can disprove these clichéd explanations with a cold, stark, and unintelligent example. literate and engaged in humpback whales (and in industry), the core composition consists mainly of men. Your personnel costs will decrease and your business will become profitable.
Charles Heywood, editor of The Worthy House magazine with experience in law and business, made some calculations based on Twitter's overall finances and staff cuts. "Musk changed Twitter's net [profit] margin overnight from negative 20% to nearly 28%, more than Apple or Google," he tweeted. Heywood's analysis argues that advertisers can't be banned forever, but even though the decline in ad sales changes profits due to external pressures (such as pressure from left-wing activists), it still shows that the group is doing well paid advertisers are under control; do not correspond to the actual product specifications. Additionally, Haywood's accounts do not include hundreds or possibly thousands of dollars in popular TikTok perks that have been offered to tech companies to attract the right "profile" of employees; Musk's famous Twitter headquarters has canceled $400 lunches.
While Musk is making good on his promise in Twitter polls to step back from day-to-day operations and terms-of-service battles if Twitter doesn't return to its previous staffing levels, the example of a major tech company is running relatively smoothly. . at least in the technical part, leaving a third of the costs for wages.
It will only become more attractive as the tech boom of the past few years looks set to fizzle out as the country teeters on the brink of recession. Some of the giants of the industry, such as Amazon and Meta, have faced a large number of layoffs in recent months. According to some estimates, more than 120,000 employees were laid off in this sector in the last three months alone. Musk's tightening of the franchise is also intriguing to other CEOs looking to cut costs. Meta (aka Facebook) just canceled the $200 salary of a longtime Lyft employee.
The elites have largely abandoned their ideologically awakened movement because we are a fabulously wealthy country, but that wealth has given the power agent class the false impression that their actions have no consequences and that they will move forward. forever They see this extraordinary boom, caused mainly by the efficient divisions of technology companies, as the mainframe of the world and believe that they can continue to make big money forever, simply by being among those who deserve ideological trust.
But speculating on hierarchies of the oppressed and punishing people for using the latest modernized language of political correctness does not add a dime to the true wealth of nations. A significant part of GDP, although difficult to estimate, is ideologically difficult. a fake economy that makes real billions for whoever holds the keys to its temple.
If anything, given the opposing forces, Twitter 2.0 may show that Musk's experiment could have lasting consequences not only for freedom of expression in the digital public sphere, but also for the structural roadmap to success and the power that comes with it. :

Worlds Richest Tech Execs Lose Over $400 Billion In 2022
The world's six richest tech founders and CEOs have lost more than $400 billion since the beginning of the year as a spate of supply chain disruptions, rising inflation and rising interest rates helped reverse massive gains in tech stocks. Peak of the corona pandemic in 2021.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Alphabet's Larry Page, and Sergey Brin have collectively lost $427 billion (£353 billion) since January, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Elon Musk's fortune suffered the most this year, losing more than $140 billion after the Twitter CEO lost the world's richest man crown to French billionaire Bernard, according to the Index. Arnaud.
Musk is believed to have sold nearly $4 trillion in Tesla stock in 2022 to fund his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, reducing the value of the electric carmaker's remaining stake , as the stock hit a two-year low this week.
Meanwhile, Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg saw his fortunes shrink by $81.1 billion this year after telling his 38-year-old employees he would be forced to lay off more than 10,000 workers to help to save costs.
Meta shares are down 65% year-to-date as the company grapples with falling advertising revenue and investor optimism about Zuckerberg's "Metaworld" ambitions.
The Nasdaq 100 technology sector index, which tracks the value of some of America's largest technology companies, is down 41% year-to-date.
Lan Yue, the founder and chief operator of crypto exchange BIT, said: “There is no doubt that if you lose money, the house of cards will collapse.
“Look at the data and you'll see that the Nasdaq really started to suffer when the Fed started raising rates in March. And technology, as always, was one of the first victims of the next bear market.
"After a period of naïve optimism and financial abundance, it's time for the tech sector to get back to reality."

Tech SellOff: 1 Top Growth Stock Down 71% To Buy Before It Starts Soaring
Technology stocks have been hurt by the bearish market over the past 12 months as many investors seek refuge to weather the ongoing economic storm. Things have been getting worse and worse, compounded by inflation at a 40-year high, rising interest rates and questions about recessionary pressures in 2023. As a result, the Nasdaq Composite Index was penalized. A closely watched tech index has fallen 30% over the past year. Many individual stocks have fallen more sharply.
There is good news amidst the doom and darkness. Investors have an opportunity to profit during a recession, even as their paper losses mount. While the opportunities abound, Teladoc Health(NYSE:TDOC) is a prime example. The tech-focused virtual health platform, a global leader in telehealth services, reported a 71% fall in its share price despite a strong track record of sustained growth and a leadership position in the industry.
Will Teladoc be able to weather the headwinds that rocked its stock in 2022? Let's dig a little deeper to see what we can find.
If you create it, they will come
The persistent narrative over the past year has been that telemedicine's best growth is over. Strong patient demand for telemedicine services during the pandemic has slowed, giving way to more subdued growth.
However, it's important to put Teladoc's pandemic-driven growth into perspective and use pre-pandemic results as a benchmark. In 2019, Teladoc's revenue grew 32% year over year to $418 million. That growth has accelerated during the pandemic, with sales up 98% and 86% in 2020 and 2021, respectively. Difficult businesses and slower adoption have dampened rapid progress, with revenue up around 20% through the first nine months of 2022.
While its growth is certainly more modest, it's still respectable and has a long way to go.
Where will the growth come from?
Bears will soon show that the fruit in hand has already been harvested. History also claims that as the pandemic subsided, the need for telehealth services came and growth ended, but the evidence suggests otherwise.
One of the largest population groups – the baby boomers – has already reached retirement age. Known as the "silver tsunami," this trend will only increase demand for telemedicine visits and home monitoring services.
Younger patients will also stimulate growth. Millennials, Gen Z and Gen X all grew up with technology, so for these patients it comes naturally. According to the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) in their 2021 State of Healthcare Report, more than 70 percent of these younger generations say they prefer the convenience of telemedicine services over traditional doctor visits. In fact, 44 percent said they would make the switch the healthcare provider if they do not continue to offer telemedicine visits as an option.
Growth forecasts in space seem to confirm this. The global telemedicine market was valued at around US$40 billion in 2020 but is projected to reach US$432 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of about 26%. As an industry leader, Teladoc Health is well positioned to follow this century-old trend and enrich shareholders along the way.
Short-term headwinds and long-term opportunities
Of late, investors have focused on Teladoc Health's seemingly unhealthy results. For the first nine months of 2022, the company reported a net loss of more than $9.8 billion, but context is needed. In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Teladoc bought Livongo Early Health for $18.5 billion.
This gave the company an immediate opportunity in the chronic disease monitoring market by providing personalized health coaching for patients with diabetes and hypertension, as well as weight management and behavioral health issues such as depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, this has also caused Teladoc a pain in the wallet.
As of early 2022, Teladoc had non-cash impairments totaling $9.6 billion, reflecting the lower market value of its Livongo investment. Although Teladoc's financial results have suffered in the short term, there remains an opportunity to leverage these systems for a more profitable business and the company's results are expected to improve significantly going forward.
at the moment
Overall, the evidence suggests that Teladoc Health is well-positioned to capitalize on the ever-growing, albeit slower, pace of digital healthcare adoption. Although telemedicine is not an alternative to an in-office visit in certain circumstances, it is well on its way to becoming a widely accepted standard of care for patients with non-critical conditions.
Over the past year, Teladoc has exploded by 71%. That leaves the stock in bargain territory, selling for less than double next year's sales, its lowest valuation ever .
That doesn't mean the stock can't go much lower from here. The market is full of examples that prove the opposite. However, given the company's growth record, large and growing pipeline of opportunities, and industry leadership, investors would be wise to buy the stock now, before Teladoc Health begins to grow.

Steam Deck is a dream come true: a portable gaming device with high-end PC capabilities that can play even the most technically demanding AAA games like Elden Ring and Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. You can even boot into Linux-based desktop mode, meaning you still have popular mods available for your Steam games from sites like Nexus Mods and Game Banana.
When the Steam Deck was first released in February, my colleague Nathan Grayson pointed out that the device was missing a few key features. As for the hardware, the fans screech like "little banshees" and it's nearly impossible to get the battery out when it finally dies. To address this, Valve, the developer of the Steam Deck, released a new model with a quieter cooling fan and easier battery removal.
Several months after the release, I pre-ordered the device. Surprisingly, I got it in about a week (maybe I'm used to the very tedious journey of buying a PlayStation 5). In my own testing, I was able to determine that these hardware issues were no longer the deciding factor for the console. The two biggest issues that will define your enjoyment of the console have to do with the software: the content you can actually play, and the overall battery life of the Steam Deck.
Below are some of the top things to consider before purchasing a steam deck this holiday season.
Check the Steam page for game compatibility with Steam decks.
Valve's proven development system is a godsend. Basically, Valve testers play around with the Steam deck to make sure it runs smoothly, that the controls match the device's buttons, and that the small screen size of portable devices doesn't hinder the overall experience, such as making it unreadable. .game text. After testing, the game will receive one of three icons: a green check mark to indicate that the game is playable, a yellow "i" to indicate that the game is working but requires some game controls or graphics to function properly, or a Slash game not working on device. The fourth icon, a question mark, indicates that a test for that game has not yet started.
Before you get your Steam deck, check the "Verified" section of the Steam Store (or just scroll to your game's page and check to the right) to see what symbol it's got. This should be your first step before buying a steam deck.
Valve provides frequent updates to their operating system to maximize compatibility and speed with all types of testing games (the recently released Choo-Choo Charles is a great example). However, some updates have broken compatibility with some games, especially some EA games, so it's important to check your "verified" status frequently to make sure everything is working while Valve fixes issues with your device.
Don't worry if the game has a yellow "i" status - it's still playable.
Even with the advice above, don't shy away from a Steam deck if you get a yellow "i" on the game you want to play. In my console experience, several games work in this realm, including Deep Rock Galactic, Among Us, and Team Fortress 2. The main problem with this game is the small text that sometimes needs to be zoomed into the game and included. A keyboard, while clunky, can be easily activated by pressing the Steam and X buttons simultaneously.
“We don't want anyone to think that this green-flagged playset [you can play on Steam]. In fact, it doesn't," said Jay Shaw, a designer working on Steam. "Customers will find that many of their games will run fine regardless of the legality status."
However, if the game you're interested in relies heavily on mouse functionality, Steam Deck is probably not a good game to play regardless of its legal status. For example, Dwarf Castle, which gets the "i", has become a routine game because of how often precise mouse movements are required, and the trackpad and Steam Deck controls don't allow for that finesse.
Explore graphic settings and control scheme features
Sometimes Steam Deck ports miss things when translating to portable installations. One game I tested, Final Fantasy XV, didn't match controller input with the PS4/5's tap touchpad. When you go to the main menu and equip your party, and the game doesn't let you change that input through the game options.
Fortunately, Steam Deck allows you to change your button bindings when you click the Steam button, click the game you're playing, and keep clicking until you see the mapping screen. Some games, even with green checkmarks, ignore these quality-of-life details, so it's important to think about your game and see if similar control features are missing.
The best video games of 2022
The same goes for graphics settings. While it can be tempting to maximize game fidelity, this often comes at the cost of performance, such as significant frame-rate and battery life costs. In our testing with God of War 2018, we found that the maximum setting gave us an hour and a half to two hours of battery life, with settings set to medium giving us an additional hour.
Several websites and forums have posts from early Steam Deck adopters researching which settings are best for various game performance and battery life. Study them and decide if you are satisfied with the graphics quality offered.
Look for anti-cheats that can make some games incompatible
Some popular games are not compatible with Steam Decks due to anti-cheat measures. These include Fall Guys, Fortnite, and Destiny 2. Valve's developers promised to continue working on compatibility for these games, but admitted that they need to work with others, such as Epic Games, on anti-cheat systems such as Easy Anti-Cheat. This makes it somewhat unclear when the game will be available on Steam, which could affect your purchase.
Mod compatibility with the deck is inconsistent - don't rely on it to work.
While testing the Steam deck, I found that mods, both available through Steam Workshop and offsite through Nexus, sometimes work and sometimes don't. Final Fantasy XV, Fallout 3, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (before becoming incompatible with Steam Decks) all offer varying degrees of success, with little rhyme or reason to what works and what doesn't.
Need a gift for gamers this holiday season? We have recommendations.
While the problem may lie with the people responsible for creating that mod, one thing is for sure: it's probably not wise to rely on the deck as a fully working mod, especially if the game doesn't get the green tick.
Think about the battery life of your Steam Deck and how you typically use it.
Battery life was a major concern when the Steam Deck was first released. Fortunately, a few OS updates have improved this situation somewhat. A less demanding game like "Undertale" can be played for about 6.5 hours before the battery is completely drained, which is longer than a flight from Washington to San Francisco. Other high-end games like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales are downloaded in just 3 hours
If you're using it at home as an alternative to a high-end gaming PC, buying a Steam Deck is a piece of cake. However, if you plan to use it as a travel device, it's important to consider its limitations, as well as how and when you'll use it most often.
OPPO Find N2 Review: The Best Foldable Hardware Out There
I tested the OPPO Find N last year and it was a very pleasant surprise. It offered a very nice and compact design that offers high quality. It offered a notchless design and a large hinge that hides the crease better than any folding device. Well, the OPPO Find N2 is here, offering all that and more improvements that we will talk about in this review.
Before we start, please note that the price range we have is for the Chinese market. This phone will not be released to global markets at the time of this review. It is the brother of the Find N2 Flip, but not the Find N2. The state of tablets and foldable apps has a lot to do with it, but OPPO may still change its mind. However, I managed to install Google Play Services on this phone without any problem and from this point of view everything worked fine. We'll talk about the software later. Let us begin.
Content:
OPPO Find N2 review. hardware design
The OPPO Find N2 looks a lot like its predecessor, but it feels like a better quality product. It is made of metal, carbon fiber and glass. It is available in glass back and vegan leather. For the sake of transparency, I used the latter. It has straighter sides than its predecessor, and that's actually a good thing. They have sharp edges and the phone is very comfortable to hold and use. It is definitely the most comfortable vertical fold smartphone I have ever used.
It is 42 grams lighter than its predecessor.
This item is 42 grams lighter than the Find N. In comparison, the Find N is heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 4, while the Find N2 is significantly lighter. The vegan leather model weighs 233 grams and the glass-backed model weighs 237 grams. OPPO managed to achieve this in part through the use of carbon fiber. It's also a bit slimmer than its predecessor, which is always a welcome change when it comes to foldable devices.
Features OPPO's second-generation Flexion heel
OPPO has developed the second generation Flexion Hinge for this phone and it is as amazing as ever. Well actually better. OPPO claims that the fold is even less visible and actually not as bad as on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. OPPO even managed to reduce the number of parts inside the hinge from 138 to 100, which is a great result. . You can even tilt the phone between 45 and 125 degrees and leave it there. It's pretty versatile and obviously feels great. The folding mechanism feels solid and frankly... it's a quality use.
I have used various binders over the years and this is my favorite. This form factor is what I think other OEMs should strive for. OPPO has really done a great job here. One thing that people will definitely notice is that it does not offer an official IP rating. You must not get this phone wet. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 offers this, but I never use my phones in the rain (usually) and I'm not in situations where I need it. So it's not really an issue, and I prefer the smaller form factor, fewer wrinkles, and uniform design over the IP rating. Of course, that could be your case.
official store
OPPO also puts a box in the box, at least it was included in our retail package. That means it will definitely come in a vegan leather model, we're not sure about the glass-backed model. Either way, this event is really cool. It is made of plastic but has a slightly rubbery feel. It's hard to explain, but it feels so good. This is a two-part job. The back sticks to the back of your device, and the front has sticky pads. The box feels great when fully open. As you'll see in the photos, I didn't even use the sticky pads on the front of the case to test this, and since I was installing the case for these images.
OPPO Find N2 review. declaration
The main difference between OPPO Find N2 and other vertically foldable phones is the aspect ratio of the screen. Like its predecessor, Find N2 leans towards landscape orientation. We're talking about the home screen, of course. It has a 7.1-inch foldable AMOLED LTPO screen with a 1792 x 1920 resolution. This screen looks great, even significantly better than the Find N, which was really good. It has rich colors, deep blacks, and gets loud enough when you need it to. It can reach up to 1550 nits of brightness at its highest point. This screen is also compatible with HDR10 + content.
The folding screen now also has a 120Hz refresh rate
The second screen measures 5.54 inches. It has a 2120 x 1080 resolution and is also a mostly flat AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Although the right side is slightly bent for use. This screen has a brightness of 1350 nits and is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus. This is a big improvement over the Find N, as the Find N has a 60Hz panel in the bezel. The Find N2 screen overlay also looks great. It is soft and smooth. Blacks are deep and viewing angles are excellent.
Both panels offer a 480 Hz touch sampling rate
To make things even better, both displays have a 480Hz touch sampling rate. Most people don't mind, but if you do, you'll be glad to hear. I saw how well it was presented so I had to look into it. It's great that OPPO has delivered such quality on both displays, giving us a tangible improvement over the first-gen model.
To be honest, I mainly used the main panel while working with it. I opened the phone as soon as possible. This deck plate certainly came in handy. The flip screen served me well when I was out and about and couldn't control the phone with two hands. It was responsive and big enough and I don't have small hands. Holding the phone was no problem and the vegan leather case definitely helped. Also, the main screen fold is almost invisible, much less visible than Galaxy Z Fold 4, Flip 4, HONOR Magic Vs, etc. You can feel it under your toe if you walk in that direction (which I didn't think too much of), but you'll feel it less than most others, which is still a good thing.
OPPO Find N2 review. carry out
OPPO Find N2 is powered by Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. This processor has proven itself in several phones in 2022. It is not only extremely powerful, but also excellent in terms of power consumption. The OPPO Find N2 also performed well indoors. OPPO is paired with 12GB/16GB LPDDR5 RAM. In our case, it was a model with 12 GB of RAM. In addition to Android 13, the package also includes UFS 3.1 flash memory. OPPO ColorOS 13 is pre-installed.
the performance was excellent
I really have no complaints when it comes to sheer smoothness and performance. From opening and closing apps to consuming media, editing photos, and playing games, everything was very fast. Gaming on the main screen was actually a great experience and this chip made sure everything ran smoothly. So I haven't experienced any lag, slowdown or anything like that. We'll talk about the software later, I won't talk about it here. Oh, and by the way, the fingerprint scanner works great. It is fast and accurate. You can set it to wake up when you physically press it or just place your finger on the power button.
OPPO Finds N2 in Test: Battery
OPPO Find N2 is equipped with a 4520 mAh battery. It is 20 mAh larger than OPPO Find N. This time, however, the title screen has a 120 Hz refresh rate and is slightly larger. The fact is that Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is great when it comes to power consumption and ColorOS also takes care of the battery. I was a bit worried at first, but the battery life is pretty good. Well, at least as far as my consumption is concerned.
Because Find N2 has two screens, results may vary significantly. We all use different apps, have different signal strengths, etc., so... keep that in mind. I have also not played many games on the phone other than for testing purposes. However, texting, emailing, browsing, taking a lot of photos, some videos, editing images, editing videos, etc. I've done everything. Basically anything but regular gaming.
I was able to get a very good battery life
I managed to squeeze 6.5-7 hours of screen time out of the device (sometimes even more). That said, I did get a bit of use out of the main and overlay screens, but I'd say the main screen got more use in a day. More than 7 hours of screen time is possible, it all depends on your usage and battery settings. Overall, I was really surprised by the battery life here.
The 67W charging was also very useful. It was very fast as I was able to fully charge the phone in about 40 minutes. The device also supports wired reverse charging, but unlike its predecessor, it doesn't support wireless charging at all. But I understand why OPPO did this to keep the phone as light and thin as possible and to avoid excessive heat.
OPPO Find N2 review. Camera
The OPPO Find N2 is equipped with a 50MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera and a 32MP telephoto camera. The performance of the main camera was really good. I was able to take some really nice photos that looked quite realistic. They didn't seem overwhelmed or inadequate. Sharpening was never too aggressive and the camera did a good job with exposure and HDR images too. Unfortunately, it's winter here, so I didn't have a chance to shoot some sunsets with the device.
The main camera does a great job.
One thing I've noticed about the main camera is that it tends to oversaturate the reds a bit, but only when there's a lot of red in the image. However, most cameras do, and it's not as bad as it sounds. He also doesn't mind lighting scenes to make them look unrealistic. This makes them bright enough to look good, but it doesn't make night shots look like daytime shots in auto mode. Yes, as long as it is not dark, you can use the automatic night mode without any problem. However, there is a night mode that can brighten up scenes a bit and it does a great job. What I've noticed is that the phone tends to compress the blacks in darker scenes, which can be a problem. In general, I am very happy with the main camera. He does a great job.
The ultra-wide camera makes the colors a bit more saturated
The ultra-wide angle camera brings with it a certain saturation. When you switch to the ultra-wide camera, you'll find things a bit more saturated. While OPPO has done its best to keep it as close as possible, the science of colors is not the same. However, the ultra-wide camera does a good job. It offers a 115 degree field of view and you can use it with confidence in most situations. However, we recommend using the main camera when shooting in the dark, as the difference is significant.
The telephoto lens makes things a bit less cluttered than the main camera, which is the opposite of an ultra-wide camera. The results are good, but nothing special. You get 2x optical zoom here, we would have preferred 3x or 3.5x on sale, but hey… OPPO should have checked the weight and thickness here. So we won't complain too much. It's also a camera you can definitely use unless you're in very dark conditions. In this case, the main camera is the best option.
Here is the macro mode
The phone also has a macro mode and it does a decent job as long as there is light in the frame. But don't try to use it at night. It's not the best macro mode I've ever seen, but it's not bad. The phone can record 4K video at 60 FPS and it does a very good job of it. The images are stable and there is no distortion or anything like that. It also works well in low light conditions. Overall I am very happy with these cameras. I always assume the worst when it comes to foldable devices, but OPPO has done a good job here.

OPPO Find N2 review. software
Please note that OPPO Find N2 comes with Android 13 and ColorOS 13, but this software is for China. At the time of this review, OPPO had no plans to bring this phone to the global market, mainly due to the state of tablet and foldable apps. However, this can change linearly. However, I managed to install Google services on the device without any problem and everything worked fine from this point of view. I have run into some annoyances along the way, mainly because this app is made for China.
The Chinese version of ColorOS has its peculiarities
First, it comes with a lot of pre-installed software that you don't need or want. The good news is that you can remove the vast majority of them. This is usually the first thing I do. Don't worry if you make a mistake, there's a built-in way to restore your uninstalled apps. ColorOS also has battery management. You can only add 5 programs to the Start menu, in addition to the ones that ColorOS automatically adds. This can be a problem for some applications. Although the Chinese version of ColorOS 13 is much better than I remembered in Find N. I was unable to receive timely notifications for many apps, mainly those that were not added to the autostart list. . Everything is a bit different here, because I see these kinds of notifications more often for apps that aren't on the list. However, I wish things were as simple as in the global version of ColorOS. Background programs behave a little differently.
I did run into some weird bugs, but nothing too annoying to be honest. For example, if you use adaptive screen brightness, the brightness will gradually increase as you use the device, and then gradually return to normal for no apparent reason. Some of these bugs have been fixed with the latest phone update, but not the ones I mentioned. The good news is that OPPO will likely continue to update the device regularly, so hopefully these minor annoyances will be fixed.
You can't change the default launcher
Since this is the Chinese version of ColorOS, I couldn't even change the default launcher. You cannot use any third party launcher here. Well you can, but you can't make it the default. Then, if you swipe up to go home, you'll be taken to the ColorOS launcher. I have to admit that it is very annoying because ColorOS is missing some key features such as app grid management on the home screen, support for advanced app shortcuts and proper icon pack support. For this purpose, I would prefer to use Nova Launcher, Microsoft Launcher, Niagara Launcher or some other variant. It would be possible in the global version, but not here.
Since this is not a global build of ColorOS, there are some such concerns. ColorOS 13 is really great on Find X5 Pro, the global version, so I can see the difference. Aside from the aforementioned annoyances and a few additions I can't get into, the phone feels great even with this Chinese version. After everything was resolved, everything was as usual. OPPO also has some useful features in ColorOS.
FlexForm mode is very useful
First up is FlexForm mode, which turns on when you open the phone to a 45-degree or 125-degree angle. This is a custom mode similar to what Samsung offers on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. You can basically build a small laptop this way. It's also useful for the camera app as you can prop your phone up to take a group selfie or something.
OPPO has also included some useful gestures here
You can also swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to activate split screen mode. ColorOS allows you to split two apps horizontally or vertically. You can even launch app combinations from the home screen icon. For example, you can open YouTube and WhatsApp side by side, tap the center of the screen, and save the combination. It will always be available now for you to get started.
Swipe the screen with three fingers to take a screenshot. If you have two apps open next to each other, swiping on one app will only take a screenshot of that app, swiping on both will close the full screen. To be honest, using gestures is intuitive. There are a number of such software features that you can use, and to be honest, almost all of them are well optimized.
